K-Gr 2–This import from France is a faux scientific guidebook about a curious species called “Flopus Classicus.” These blobby, lima-bean shaped creatures, which include the “Faulty-Footed Flop,” the “Roly-Poly Flop,” and the very rare “Zombie Flop,” have four legs, googly eyes, and idiosyncratic personalities. Offbeat chapters introduce kooky characteristics of the Flop (they are flexible but cannot make phone calls on their own); discuss the difference between Flops and their cousins, the Tuffs; and offer tips on being a caring Flop owner. Wordplay abounds in Durand’s watercolor, collage, and pencil cartoon scenes: a spread entitled “FIG. 923A” shows a cross-section of their subterranean “Flop Houses,” and a dog who chomps on a blue Flop’s derriere receives an “unflappable” response.
VERDICT The irreverence may leave some readers siding with Philip Flop (“By golly, Floppy Joe, I’m totally confused!”), but others will be inspired to embark on creative explorations of their own
