Gr 2–5-Ever wonder why some birds don't fly or why a peacock is such a show off? In the fourth installment of Zommer's "Big Book" series, these questions and many more will be answered. Written and organized in similar format to his previous titles, Zommer's magical illustrations will draw the reader into the captivating world of birds. Echoing his previous works, the author chooses to place the animals' eyes on their face in a unique manner. Readers will enjoy looking for a hidden egg among the simply conveyed information and eye-catching drawings of birds large and small. The table of contents quickly allows the reader to scan the subject matter and get an idea of what is covered in the book, from facts about birds to the various types. A careful walk through this book will prove to be an enjoyable one, perhaps leading some curious patrons to become instant bird aficionados.
VERDICT A satisfying addition to the series. Pair with a simple picture book such as Kevin Henkes's Birds to create a soaring combination. -Martha Rico, Yselta ISD, TX
