In this timely return to their work of more than a decade ago, Ross, McKechnie, and Rothbauer have retained much of the content of Reading Matters while focusing more on technological advances in readership. For example, "The Boy Problem" has disappeared, replaced by a section on multimodal literacy. This volume places less emphasis on discrediting various myths about reading (for instance, that people don't read as much as they used to). Instead, the authors debunk a single, pervasive belief: that other readers will share one's own preferences (what they term the "myth of the equivalency of reading experiences"). A less positive change is the omission of the section on the relationship between reading and writing. Writing is still mentioned but is no longer linked so explicitly to reading practices. As in the first iteration, case studies provide personal snapshots of readers (and illustrate the extensive research conducted by the authors). Structurally, the book closely follows Reading Matters, including easily digestible chapter segments, tips for librarians and educators, and references within each section.
