Gr 9 Up—Rachel's musician brother, Micah, has descended into the frightening abyss of crystal meth addiction and now he is missing. Angry at herself for all of the things she should have or could have done, Rachel recruits Micah's best friend and band member, Tyler, to help her search for him. Following a lead, they head to Ocean Beach. For the next 24 hours, Rachel and Tyler pursue drug dealers, users, and anyone who may have been in contact with Micah. Told in chapters alternating between the search and past events, the novel (Simon Pulse, 2012) weaves a picture of lies, excuses, and secrets to create a brutally honest story told in an authentic teen voice. Arcos minces no words and pulls no punches, and there's no neat and tidy ending. Narrator Candace Thaxton stays true to the characters, with a realistic portrayal of the bright and perceptive Rachel. A great deal of information about the horrors of meth addiction is woven into the story. Drug use, alcohol, sex, and swearing make this title most appropriate for high school students. Arcos's sensitive treatment of a timely topic will make this a popular title with both teens and those who work with them. The audio version makes the book accessible to a wider audience.—Lisa Hubler, Charles F. Brush High School
