Gr 2-4–This anthropomorphic guide introduces readers to core science topics in biology, chemistry, and physics. Proud Bacterium explains that it is the smallest form of unicellular microorganisms. Chatty, friendly Mammal informs readers that they are also mammals. Each character has a helpful nickname. For example, Invertebrate is known as “Super Softy.” Cartoon illustrations add humor and depict beings in a wide range of colors, shapes, and sizes. Each spread includes a helpful “Say What?” and a “Science Now” box. There are occasions of minor snark. The “Science Now” box in the spread for amphibians reads, “They eat live critters, sometimes using their tongues to grab them and pull them into their mouths. Tasty!” There are also a couple of additional point bulletins per page. A complete glossary and helpful index are appended.
VERDICT A scrappy, fast-paced, entertaining beginners’ romp through the sciences. Recommended for elementary grades and sure to draw in budding scientists.
