Amazing Places

Barefoot Bks. Sept. 2020. 64p. Tr $19.99. ISBN 9781646860678.
Gr 2-6–Marvelous attractions from around the world are explored in this colorful picture book. Readers learn about the Taj Mahal, the Colosseum, the Pyramid of Khufu (also known as the Great Pyramid of Giza), Stonehenge, Angkor Wat, and the Sydney Opera House. The table of contents lists all the sites and features, and a world map indicates their locations. A glossary defines terms including mausoleums, cathedrals, watchtowers, stone circles, and amphitheaters. Two-page spreads for each monument cover common themes titled “Enter and Be Amazed,” “Look Up Close,” “Tell Me a Story,” and “The Word To Know.” Readers learn facts such as how the architect designed the Sydney Opera House and that there are 222 steps to reach the Christ the Redeemer statue. Cerocchi’s pleasant gouache and pastel illustrations will attract younger readers. However, a pronunciation guide is sorely lacking; some readers will struggle with words and place names such as keffiyeh, cartouche, Chahar Bagh, Kukulkan, and Neuschwanstein. The small print will also deter some.
VERDICT Young readers will be turned off by the dense text and older ones by the illustrations, but the book could be of some use for reports.
