Gr 10 Up –Sixteen-year-old Wes and Corey go to jazz camp and immediately hate it. After teaming up with a fellow hater, 19-year-old Ash, the teens decide to run away from camp, form a band, and go on tour. Romantic entanglements, comical misadventures, and even some music making ensue in this rollicking ramble. The humor ranges from raunchy to uproarious to wry, although serious sections appear as well. What makes this audiobook special is narrator Michael Crouch’s comic timing. His fresh and youthful voices will allow listeners to easily picture the characters. His characterization of the teens is impeccable: Wes’s deadpan delivery, Corey’s stoner temperament, and the mysterious Ash. Listeners will laugh out loud as Wes and Corey suggest names for their band and Ash hates on each one in detail. VERDICT Give this to your music lovers, who will appreciate the musical references and band-name dropping throughout the audiobook. [“Teens who are music nerds or fans of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl will appreciate this novel’s sharp wit and playful style”: SLJ 4/16 review of the Abrams Amulet book.]–Julie Paladino, formerly of East Chapel Hill High School, NC
