The latest edition of Series Made Simple features two all new sections: early learning and Spanish language.

I’m thrilled to introduce two new catergories in this latest issue of Series Made Simple: early learning and Spanish language. Both of these sections have been in the works for some time, and it’s an honor to cover these much-needed series.

Over the past few years, books for the youngest of readers, specifically titles that promote social emotional learning (SEL), have been trending. Lisa G. Kropp remarks in “Little Hands, Big Brains” on the inquisitive nature of toddlers and preschoolers and how the best series cater to that curiosity while incorporating critical thinking opportunities to get them learning, too. Though these series might be for tots, they pack a punch—covering everything from the months in the year to the importance of respect and community.

In “Animals and Famous Figures en español,” Lucia Acosta says that “a lack of English proficiency is not a reason for children to be left behind academically.” It is imperative to provide access for English language learners (ELL) and their families. I hope publishers heed the demand and create more original and translated books for ELL students. I thank the folks at Latinx in Publishing, Latinxs in Kid Lit, “De Colores: The Raza Experience in Books for Children,” and countless others who tirelessly work to cover and promote quality materials for Latinx youth, for paving the way.

All of this is not to say that our work is done. The availability of children’s books in languages other than English, and the accuracy of translated works, still remains an issue.
