SLJ/ISTE Webcast Series Returns with Tech Trends Spring 2020

The discussions in the spring set of free, one-hour professional development programs will tackle serving striving readers, information inequity, and news literacy.


The SLJ/ISTE webcast series returns on March 5 with the first of three sessions of Tech Trends Spring 2020. Each free, one-hour broadcast will discuss timely, important topics for K-12 students and offer practical solutions for librarians who want to make an impact.

The series, presented by SLJ in partnership with ISTE, kicks off with Serving Striving Readers on Thursday, March 5 at 3 p.m. Eastern. Join school librarians Michelle Annette and Julia Torres and middle school literacy teacher Michele Haiken as they discuss how to get students—especially those striving or disinterested readers—excited about reading and bolster their literacy skills. Education reporter Marva Hinton will moderate the webcast, which will offer ideas for elementary, middle, and high school students.

The series continues with It’s About Equity! Let’s Tackle Information Poverty on Thursday, April 2 at 3 p.m. Eastern. Moderated by "NeverEnding Search" blogger and Rutgers University assistant professor Joyce Valenza, this webcast will discuss information access and inequity and how librarians can close the gaps for students. Valenza will be joined by Georgia State University Perimeter College assistant professor of education Tiffany Flowers, director of library services for the New York school library system Melissa Jacobs, Pennsylvania School Librarians Association advocacy committee co-chair Debra Kachel, and Detroit School of Arts library media specialist Karen Lemmons.

Spring Tech Trends wraps up with Session 3 Critical Thinking in the Age of Fake News on Thursday, May 14 at 3 p.m. Eastern. Moderated by SLJ news and features editor Sarah Bayliss, panelists including the News Literacy Project’s Peter Adams, Stanford University Internet Observatory research manager Renee DiResta, and educator Jennifer LaGarde will share the latest teaching tools and strategies to give students the skills they need to navigate the digital world and critically evaluate information for credibility.
