Teens Tackle Race and Identity, Aided by a Graphic Novel | SLJ Summit 2017

Move over, John Green. In an event featuring star authors and prominent educators, a group of high school classmates stole the show at School Library Journal‘s recent Summit in Nashville, TN.

The students, seniors at Jesuit High School (JHS) in Portland, OR, talked about their exploration of racial identity in a presentation that was insightful and moving. Guided by JHS librarian Gregory Lum and English teacher Megan Mathes, the teens engaged a discussion on race based on Gene Luen Yang’s award-winning graphic novel American Born Chinese.

Yang, who appeared on the dais alongside the students, called the panel “a balm for all my fears.”
