James Patterson, Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade to Partner for Literacy Webcast

Bestselling author and Children’s Choice Book Award “Author of the Year” nominee James Patterson and Miami Heat champion Dwyane Wade will be teaming up for a free national webcast for kids next month that aims to highlight the importance of reading for success in life. “One on One: Fundamentals with Dwyane Wade and James Patterson,” which will air on April 25, 2013 at 1:00 PM ET, will be produced in collaboration with NBA Cares, the Wade’s World Foundation, ReadKiddoRead, and Hachette Book Group. School, library, home viewers can sign up in advance at

“As a new author, I am very excited to join forces with acclaimed author James Patterson to advocate the importance of literacy throughout the country,” says NBA star Wade, author of the New York Times bestseller A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger than Basketball, in the announcement.

Adds Patterson in the announcement, “Getting our kids reading is a matter of life and death; this is not about grades or what college these kids might be going to. This is about saving kids’ lives, and if we don’t get our kids reading now, many of them aren’t going to make it. We have to get that light to go off in their heads at an early age—before or around the middle school years.”

On March 21, Patterson and Wade will sit down at Ponce De Leon Middle School in Coral Gables, FL, for a conversation about reading that will be moderated by Emmy Award winner and Miami Heat courtside reporter Jason Jackson. Kids across the country will be able to submit their questions for the pair in advance via social media. The webcast will also include special messages from additional NBA All-Stars encouraging kids to read. In addition, Patterson and his publisher Hachette Book Group will make a major donation of books. On March 27, Wade will return to his hometown of Chicago to play against the Bulls—and for every point he scores, Hachette Book Group will donate 1,000 copies of Patterson books to young readers in the Miami-Dade school system.

  1. As a Writing Interventionist and public speaker, I am deeply touched by this push to make literacy a priority. Reading has always been a determinant in our success in writing, job skills and public speaking just to name a few. Oftentimes, I encourage students to read everything they see.

James Patterson and Dwayne Wade are a phenomenal pair to put together for literacy. They represent so many target groups. My daughter, Kirby Lynn Gilmore (who authored her first book in 5th grade) absolutely loves James Patterson’s books. She and my son, William also greatly admire Dwayne Wade. Together, she should be able to enhance the interest of many people with regards to literacy.
