White House Declares June 18 “National Day of Making” and Launches Maker Initiatives for Libraries

On June 18, the White House hosted its very first Maker Faire, where the Institute of Museum and Library Services and LEGO Systems announced STEM and STEAM initiatives for libraries across the country.

The White House honored 10 connected educators, including SLJ columnist and school librarian, Carolyn Foote. The Chicago Public Library celebrated families and early literacy with its 20th annual “Bookamania 2013: All Families, All Year”, a free, daylong children’s book festival.

President Obama’s weekly radio and Internet address on Saturday focused on the critical role that education plays in our country’s future—and the need for Congress to pass his proposed jobs bill to help states prevent teacher layoffs and rehire them. But he made no mention of school librarians.
