Gr 6 Up–In this made-for-TV adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic story, ex-criminal Jean Valjean seeks a better life for himself, but his efforts are dogged by the relentless Inspector Javert. With the young orphan Cosette at his side, Valjean flees to Paris where, years later, civil unrest divides the city. Amidst the turmoil, Cosette meets and falls in love with the young noble Marius, Valjean’s true identity is revealed, and Javert is faced with an ideological dilemma that ultimately leads to his demise. In the end, Valjean proves to be the man he has always wanted to become. Gerard Depardieu brings Valjean to life with an intensity and fierceness that closely resembles the character Hugo created. Depardieu expresses his character’s inner struggles with passion, depicting Valjean’s quest for redemption with conviction. John Malkovich’s Javert oozes sinister intent and embodies the man’s obsessive desire to destroy Valjean with single-minded ferocity. When the two actors share the screen, their chemistry is palpable, thanks to writer Didier Decoin, whose screenplay retains the novel’s dynamic characters and moral ambiguities. The movie’s pacing and the strong supporting cast round out a superb production. Both fans of the novel and those new to the story will not be disappointed.–Audrey Sumser, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Mayfield, OH

Gr 8 Up–Three friends take off in a hybrid car to tour America in order to discover how we are saving or destroying our planet. In short segments filled with interviews, music, and often stunning scenery, the trio finds innovative green technologies and lifestyles that are being implemented across the nation. They travel to 50 states over the course of a year, and their experiences include visiting a living roof in Chicago, a mud home in Nebraska, homes and other structures built with all types of recycled materials in New Mexico, wind farms in Texas, a project in New Jersey where packaging materials are made from garbage, and more. They interview many well-known and ordinary citizens who are working to save the planet and seeking to live green. Pertinent environmental problems and issues are also studied, including water usage, oil drilling, wetlands, rising sea levels, fossil fuel dependence, and sustainability in all aspects of our daily lives. One of the most moving segments occurs during the team’s visit in West Virginia with Larry Gibson, a well-known leader in the fight against mountaintop removal mining. Everywhere there are questions and viewers are asked, “How are we going to do it?” “How are we going to save the planet?” Filled with hope and humor, this production demonstrates that we can create solutions through community and individual efforts. Classes across the curriculum can utilize this program.–Patricia Ann Owens, formerly Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Mt. Carmel, IL

Gr 9 Up–Filmmaker Ken Burns turns his well-documented talents to a more contemporary topic: the beating and rape of a white woman in New York’s Central Park during racial and class strife in the late 1980s. The news media applied incredible pressure on the city’s embattled police force to solve the crime which resulted in charges made against five Hispanic and black young men who were in the park that night. After each served prison sentences for the crime despite only meager circumstantial evidence and coerced confessions, another man’s admission of guilt was supported by evidence. This moving documentary of what came to be called “The Central Park Jogger Case” tells the story from the perspective of the five men with a rich mix of archival video and personal commentary from all those involved—public officials, media professionals, attorneys, and historians. This thorough review, typical of Burns’s celebrated style, makes an historical event understandable and relevant. Particularly effective are the commentaries by four of the five victims of what was generally considered to have been society’s compulsion for quick “justice” at the time and its resultant effect on racial relations nationwide. Some street language is used, but it is hardly offensive and fits naturally into the speakers’ milieu. The options of chapter selection as well as English and Spanish subtitles enhance the value of this resource for both classroom and library settings.–Dwain Thomas, formerly Lake Park High School, Roselle, IL

Gr 9 Up–Wein’s award-winning novel (Hyperion, 2012) is a brilliant story of two young women during World War II who are brought together to support the British RAF. Though from opposite stations in life, Maddie and Queenie (Verity) are both brash, confident, and beautiful, and their friendship is heartfelt. The story unfolds gracefully through written confessions of one of the women who was captured by Nazis after their plane went down in France. The friends are separated after this tragedy, and they (and listeners) are left to wonder if both of them have survived. The prisoner’s testimony is crafted to confess the truth, while misleading her Nazi interrogators. At times details about airplanes, mechanics, incendiaries, and such leave listeners feeling woefully inadequate. Graphic accounts of torture and death are put forth in explicit detail. Wein is a master at recounting both horrible events and the emotional subtleties which define the lives of these two heroines. Narration by Morven Christie and Lucy Gaskell is superb, especially with Scottish, British, French, German, and English so beautifully spoken. An excellent choice for thoughtful, mature listeners.–Robin Levin, U.S. Holocaust Museum Teacher/Fellow

Gr 9 Up– In the thrilling and brilliant conclusion (Holt, 2013) to Pearson’s Jenna Fox Chronicles, Locke Jenkins has finally been able to escape the malicious Dr. Gatsbro with the aide of the Network. He heads for Boston to repay the Favor owed for their assistance. Locke wants nothing more than to complete his task so that he can return to Jenna Fox in California and have the chance to be with the girl that he’s loved for almost 300 years. What Locke finds in Boston, though, causes him to question his feelings and his ideals. Locke’s task is to retrieve the leader of the Resistance, Karden, a man thought to have been dead for the last 16 years. To do so, Locke must win over the teenage daughter of the government official holding Karden captive. Drawn deep into the struggle between the corrupt government and the Network, Locke finds himself defining who he wants to be in the hundreds of years he may have left to live, and who he believes should be beside him as he goes into the future. Matthew Brown’s even tones and deliberate pacing brilliantly capture Locke as he moves through Pearson’s explorations into morality, societal relationships, government control, and what truly defines humanity. The final events of the book not only give listeners the end of Locke’s story, but also bring an emotionally satisfying conclusion to Jenna’s tale. Gr 9 Up–Dylan is a husky high school junior with a craving for burgers, a penchant for retro T-shirts, and a dream of owning a ’69 Mustang and pursuing a career in journalism. But a lack of respect at school and a run-in with a corpse in a dumpster lead him to determine that what he really needs is mojo. When he hears about a missing girl from an elite high school across town, he sees the perfect opportunity to track her down and gain some notoriety. His pseudo-detective gig leads him to an organization called Gangland where he becomes involved with upper-crust society and a way of life he had previously never even dreamed of. Serious themes such as anti-bullying and gay rights are skillfully woven into the story with edgy humor. Jessie Bernstein’s narration of Tharp’s story (Knopf, 2013) is stellar, and his amusing and distinct character voices add to the tale’s humor. Wildly careening plot twists, fabulous characters, and madcap antics all add up to some serious mojo. Alcohol and drug use, swearing, lesbian relationships, strippers, and more combine to make this choice most appropriate for high school students.–Lisa Hubler, Charles F. Gr 9 Up –Oliver’s final novel (HarperCollins, 2013) in the “Delirium” trilogy uses alternating chapters— Lena and Hana—to run parallel story lines between opposite worlds until the two literally collide in a brilliantly crafted ending. In 21 days, Hana, Lena’s childhood best friend, is to marry Fred Hargrove, a secretive, sadistic man whose political platform to restore order got him elected mayor. Hana harbors a dark secret of deceit and betrayal. Three days have passed since Lena, Julian, and a renegade band of Invalids escaped the regulators (and certain death) and returned to the Wilds, which is no longer a safe haven since Hargrove’s election. The unexpected reappearance of Alex, who Lena never stopped loving, muddles her feelings for Julian in this complicated love triangle. Determined in their quest to change the future, they join the Resistance. Sarah Drew’s narration is fantastic, vividly capturing every human emotion: venomous hatred, whooping joy, flattened resignation, gut-wrenching loss, and wistful love. This harrowing tale of love in all its forms—especially the love of freedom of choice, be it right or wrong—is a riveting page-turner. Gr 10 Up–It’s the summer of 1981 and 19-year-old Ry Burke, along with his mother and younger sister, are preparing to leave the failing family farm in Kraus’s thriller (Delacorte, 2013). It has been nine years since Ry’s abusive father was sent to prison after committing horrific acts, culminating with a 16-hour chase through the forest in pursuit of his son. Ry survived the ordeal with the help of three toys turned imaginary friends: a teddy bear called Mr. Furrington, a bendy figure of Jesus Christ, and a frightening piece of folk art dubbed Scowler. Back in the present, an approaching meteor shower will have unimaginable consequences for the family, and Ry will once again call upon his protectors as his father returns to exact his revenge. Listeners are treated to a stellar performance by Kirby Heyborne, whose pacing is impressive. He has an incredible ability to convey so much about a character through his choice of voice: the rough speech of Marvin with his cringe-inducing unmelodious humming; the high-pitched and appropriately clichéd British accent for Mr. Furrington; the soft, gentle tone of Jesus Christ; and the garbled nonsensical sounds of Scowler. In the end, what truly stands out is his nuanced portrayal of Ry, whose deteriorating mental state is at the heart of this harrowing, disturbing, and yet completely absorbing story.–Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL

Gr 5 Up–Sheinkin’s stellar nonfiction account (Flash Point, 2012) captures the science, technology, logistics, and politics of the race to build the first atomic bomb. The book gives listeners a holistic perspective, highlighting the fact that the story of the bomb, while a technological miracle of the time, is at its core, an intricate tale of daring individuals whose actions affected families, friends, communities, and nations. The story begins at the end, with the capture of American spy Harry Gold in Philadelphia. From Gold’s seizure, Sheinken takes a retrospective look at events from the discovery of nuclear fusion to the deployment and the aftermath of the uranium and plutonium bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Gold, a chemist, in his role as Communist sympathizer and Soviet courier, is the thread that weaves this fascinating book together as it follows the trail of scientists, Nazi resisters, Soviet and American spies, workers, military commanders, and political leaders across the globe. The author’s narrative is as gripping as that of nonfiction masters such as Jim Murphy and Russell Freedman. Roy Samuelson’s clear diction and measured delivery complements the subject matter, offering students the opportunity to absorb sometimes complex material without pause. This award-winning, meticulously sourced book deserves a spot in every library.–Lisa Taylor, Ocean County Library, NJ

Gr 7-10–Tracy Kidder spent years following Dr. Paul Farmer’s career and traveling with him. Dr. Paul decided at an early age that he wanted to help people, particularly the poor, and he felt the area of infectious disease was his calling. Shortly before starting Harvard Medical School, he traveled to Haiti and witnessed the devastating conditions there. He helped to found Partners in Health (PIH); led projects in Haiti, Siberia, Peru, and Russia; advocated for the treatment of multi-drug resistant TB for even the least fortunate, and helped with AIDs and tuberculosis research. Farmer embraced the idea of “mountains beyond mountains,” tackling one problem and then starting on the others. He and other PIH members have changed the way people look at infectious disease and how the poor are treated. Lincoln Hoppe narrates this book (Delacorte, 2013) that has been adapted from a lengthier version (Random, 2003) for adults by Kidder. He speaks in a caring and compassionate tone, and the story flows just like a suspense novel. Farmer’s story will inspire students.
Gr 6 Up–Many colorful and fascinating examples of the over 120 species of ducks are presented via fantastic photography in this production. Paul Giamatti narrates in a friendly, unobtrusive way, sharing many facts while keeping a loose narrative of a Wood duck family. Throughout are breathtaking visuals, not only of unusual ducks with iridescent plumage, but remarkable underwater shots of ducks diving for clams in the Arctic, baby ducklings jumping from a nest high up in trees several feet to the ground when their wings aren’t yet formed, and more. There’s much to be learned about the two different kinds of flight, nesting, and common predators. Fascinating tidbits are also presented, such as the fact that ducks were one of the first creatures to return from land to the sea, there is a waxy gland that ducks use to groom their feathers that make them waterproof, and some ducks have a special circulation in their legs and webbed feet to preserve their high body temperature while in icy water. The only minor drawback is that not every species is identified during the program—but at the end, instead of listing a cast, the producers show photos of the ducks and identify them. This winning production features everything a strong educational program should have—lots of information, riveting footage, and articulate narration.–C. A.
Gr 9 Up–African American social activist Julian Bond tells his family’s story: a struggle for equality. Tracing his roots back to slavery, Bond recounts the family’s tradition of hard work and an emphasis on education as a means for advancement. Using historical film footage and still photographs, a female voice speaking as Bond’s mother, and scenes of Bond lecturing in his classroom at the University of Virginia, he reviews his participation in the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), his role at the 1963 March on Washington, his service in the Georgia House and Senate, his nomination for the vice presidency of the United States at the 1968 Democratic Convention, his protest of the Vietnam War, and his praise for President Lyndon Johnson’s actions towards civil rights. Bond leaves viewers with a look forward—“So many undone things in this country”—and his firm belief that someone will step forward to lead the way. The centerpiece of the film is Bond talking to an off-screen interviewer—it is powerful. American history, African American studies, and government classes can utilize this film to review history from a primary source. The film’s length makes it very classroom friendly.–Patricia Ann Owens, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Mt. Carmel

Gr 4-8–Once magic was powerful and very useful, but as the dragons have been dying off, it has been fading. Now its powers are only used for mundane purposes such as rewiring houses or delivering pizzas by magic carpet. With the prediction of the death of the last dragon by Kazam Mystical Arts Management’s seers, 15-year old foundling Jennifer Strange, the agency’s acting director, is suddenly sent headlong into events that will change her life and the lives of all in the UnUnited Kingdoms. Little does she know the role she is destined to play in the dragon’s death or in the coming of what is known as Big Magic. Suddenly Jennifer becomes known as the Last Dragonslayer, and is fighting off commercial endorsements and driving the armored Slayermobile while trying to avoid a war between her kingdom and the neighboring duchy. While this all seems very dark and ominous, Fforde keeps the puns and humor flowing, and populates the tale (Harcourt, 2012) with outrageous individuals and fantastic creatures. The plot is engaging, and Jennifer is a mature and well-developed character whose intelligence, strong morals, and ingenuity help her through some very difficult decisions. Elizabeth Jasicki channels the book’s wittiness impeccably, and presents each character with just the right voice and accent, from polite Jennifer to the gruff, wizened Maltcassian the Dragon. Listeners will be captivated by this first title in a trilogy and will eagerly await the further adventures of Jennifer, her pet quarkbeast, and her assistant, Tiger Prawns.–MaryAnn Karre, West Middle School, Binghamton, NY

Gr 8 Up–In Gardener’s dystopian novel (Candlewick, 2013), 15-year old Standish Treadwell and his grandfather live in Zone Seven, the lowest-ranked district of the totalitarian government of the Motherland, and try to survive after Standish’s parents disappear. The Motherland is obsessed with an upcoming moon landing which will establish their superiority over other countries. Meanwhile, food is scarce and everyone is watched constantly. Standish and his grandfather befriend a mysterious family that moves next door. Hector, the 15 year-old son, becomes Standish’s protector when he’s bullied at school. The boys find fun in an old soccer ball, build a spaceship in the attic, and wonder what lays on the forbidden other side of the big wall behind their houses. When they find out, their lives are irrevocably changed. Standish finds refuge from his bleak surroundings in a glorious imagination and the courage to make a final stand against the oppressive regime in which he lives in the end. Sixteen-year old English actor Robert Madge does an outstanding job portraying Standish in the first-person narration. Standish’s voice is strong throughout, whether he is being taunted because he has trouble reading and writing (the author is dyslexic) or dreaming about his imaginary planet. Violent, dark, yet strangely hopeful, this audiobook will stay with listeners for a long time.–Julie Paladino, East Chapel Hill High School, NC

Gr 6-9–Espen should be focusing on winning the soccer championships and talking to the beautiful Solveig, but instead the Nazi occupation of Norway fills his waking hours. The Nazis attacked Norway and quickly took over the country, but that can’t break the spirits of the Norwegian people. Espen and other teenage members of his soccer team join the resistance movement, where they risk their lives to try to pass secret messages to other spies or do spying of their own. His younger sister, Ingrid, also joins the resistance and writes about the horrors of Nazi occupation in her diary. Not all Norwegians fight the Germans. Espen’s best friend, Kjell, becomes a spy for the Germans and Aksel, who dislikes the other boys, becomes part of Norway’s version of the Gestapo. For five years, Espen performs jobs for the resistance, while his friends die, are arrested, and are forced to flee the country. Espen knows it could be just a matter of time before he’s caught, but he will fight to the end for his country. Told in the voices of Espen, Ingrid, and Aksel, Preus’s novel (Amulet, 2012) accurately captures the mood and history of the occupation. At the end of the novel, Preus reveals the true story behind Espen. Jeff Woodman portrays Aksel’s descent into brutality, Ingrid’s innocence and bravery, and Espen’s fear and strength, while giving perfect voice to all the secondary characters. An excellent story about a lesser-known part of World War II history.–Sarah Flood, Breckinridge County Public Library, Hardinsburg, KY

Gr 6-8–Tommy Pepper is in the school cafeteria trying to hide the embarrassing superhero lunch box his grandmother sent him for his 12th birthday when it suddenly clatters to the floor. When he retrieves it, it’s not the same lunchbox. The shape has changed, and the scene depicted is of another world. Inside he finds a shimmering green and silver chain which he slips around his neck beneath his shirt. Suddenly, Tommy knows things that other people don’t, his artistic abilities seem to bring his creations to life, he can play the piano like a virtuoso, and he can catch a long pass like a pro. But the only newfound ability that Tommy really cherishes is the one that allows him to relive his memories of his mother. Wracked with guilt over her death, the recalling of happy times together feels like a kind of absolution. When an unknown assailant begins to threaten the entire town, Tommy realizes that they are after the necklace. But he’s loath to give it up until his father and sister become part of the bargain. In alternating chapters, the story switches between Tommy’s world and the world of the Valorim (from a planet across the cosmos) who forged the chain. The tale of the Valorim is told in a formal style, rich with words from an invented language. Narrator Graham Winton does an excellent job of keeping Gary Schmidt’s sci-fi fantasy (Clarion, 2012) flowing despite these shifts in writing style and language. He is so adept at speaking the invented language that listeners will begin to decipher the meanings even without the benefit of the glossary (included at the back of the book). His performance brings to life this beautiful tale of healing and forgiveness in a way that goes way beyond just reading the text yourself. A must-have for middle school and public libraries.–Cary Frostick, Mary Riley Styles Public Library, Falls Church, VA

Gr 5-9–During the Holocaust, Nazi officials established the Lodz Ghetto in Poland, a desolate home to more than 245,000 Jews. Only 877 survived, including just 12 children. This story-in-verse (Amazon Children’s Pub., 2008) offers listeners a glimpse of the experiences of Syvia Perlmutter, Roy’s aunt, in the Lodz Ghetto from 1939, when she was just four years old, through 1945. Through Syvia’s eyes, we learn of the loving family who tried to endure unbelievable deprivations, seeing conditions deteriorate and neighbors disappear daily. Roy recreated these vignettes from her aunt’s taped narrative. Tavia Gilbert’s narration brings Syvia, her family members, and friends to life. While some pronunciations are questionable (Chelm-EH-no, Ha-VAH), the overall effect is authentic. Though Holocaust study is usually reserved for older students, this personal account serves as a rare foray into the perceptions and impressions of a little girl amidst grave realities. Family love and support somehow overpower the heinous forces which would destroy all in the Ghetto, and Syvia manages to endure by cooperating with her courageous parents. Winner of several literary awards, this is a unique choice for understanding the dark years of Holocaust history, with a glimmer of hope emanating from one little girl who survived.–Robin Levin, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Teacher/Fellow, Ft. Gr 9 Up–In this visually stunning film, viewers are given a brief glimpse into the lives and art of three 20th-century female artists—Georgia O’Keefe, Emily Carr, and Frida Kahlo—through their own letters and diaries. Each artist spurned the tradition of realism by using painting to capture her own personal experiences. We see O’Keefe walking through the desert, gathering rocks and weathered sections of bone, stating “nothing is less real than realism.” Carr wanders through the forests of British Columbia, with its soaring trees and shafts of filtered sunlight, adamant in her belief that “the old way of seeing is inadequate.” Kahlo, internally raging against the way her physical limitations have come to define her life, declares “decency and good behavior weary me.” These women are courageous in their convictions about their defiant approach to art, yet we hear how they falter when their paintings are subjected to public opinion. The paintings in combination with the artists’ thoughts and impressions provide for an intimate portrait of each woman. Students will be intrigued and want to learn even more about these artists.–Cary Frostick, Mary Riley Styles Public Library Falls Church, VA

Gr 2-5–Mike Venezia knows how to present a topic with whacky humor, interesting facts, and lots of kid appeal. Based on his book (Children’s Press, 2008) about Faith Ringgold, this enthusiastic program introduces an amazing and influential African-American artist to young viewers. Told in the first person and read in a rich, smile-filled voice by Ora Jones, this production provides information about the artist and her artwork. There are plenty of photographs and video clips, along with funny cartoons that are sure to appeal to the target audience. Many examples of the artist’s work are also featured, showing the wide range of her talent, with special emphasis on her story quilts and stuffed sculptures. Wonderful background music sets an optimistic tone as viewers learn about Ringgold’s childhood and adult life. The challenges she faced and the experiences and artists that influenced her work are presented. Best of all, viewers get to see that art work, diving into its colors and reveling in its exuberance. This is a story of persistence and perseverance—of a strong woman who followed her dream and cherishes her heritage. Both educational and inspiring, it merits a place in all library collections for children.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary, Federal Way, WA

Gr 3-5–The program does a great job of covering the basics of personal hygiene that every fourth through sixth grade teacher wishes their students knew. The focus is not on puberty itself, but rather on the extra oil on your skin and in your hair, the sweat that’s now becoming a problem, pimples., deodorant. And, since it covers the basics, it provides clear instructions on how to avoid problems. Taking showers, brushing your teeth, washing your hands properly—it’s all here. There are also segments on taking care of your clothes, cleaning your ears, cutting your nails, taking care of your hair, and avoiding germs. The narrator also discusses protecting your hearing and eyesight, going a bit beyond personal hygiene. The format is also fun—each segment deals with a single issue followed by a short rap and dance by the multiethnic adolescent cast that gives a quick review and ends with the line “you’re not a little kid anymore!” Pacing is good, and the valuable information is presented clearly. The attitude of the presenters is positive and there’s little here that would embarrass students. This is clearly designed to catch kids just before, or as, they need the information. Teachers will embrace it, and probably show it more than once a year.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary, Federal Way, WA

Gr 8 Up–This year marks the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, an event made possible by the efforts of a diverse group of anti-slavery activists referred to as Abolitionists. Considered to be radicals by many and often the target of personal attacks, their struggles to raise the collective consciousness of Northerners and Southerners to the horror of the slave system are recreated in this incredibly well-crafted program. Divided into three 60-minute components, this nicely paced presentation is uniquely structured: each section includes theater-quality dramatic re-creations of historical events which are smoothly punctuated with supplemental documentary-style narration and commentary/interpretation by a panel of historians. The producers follow a chronological pattern, beginning in the 1820s and progressing through the end of the Civil War, with moving portraits of significant individuals (Angelina Grimké, William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe, John Brown, and others) as well as events (such as the publication of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the power of abolitionist newspapers, and the enactment of the Fugitive Slave Law) and their contributions to their committed cause. A wide variety of vintage photographs and copies of period newspapers supplement the narrator’s clear and well-paced script. Chapter selection and English-language subtitles are optional. Additional resources, including a blog, are available at pbs.org to increase the usability of this incredible film which will be a valued asset to media collections for classroom use and individual research.–Dwain Thomas, formerly Lake Park High School, Roselle, IL

Gr 9 Up–The Civil War, the first modern and industrial war, resulted in 750,000 casualties, a scale of death unprecedented in American history. This documentary, based on Drew Gilpin Faust’s book This Republic of Suffering (Knopf, 2008), examines the ways the nation dealt with this unspeakable tragedy. Narrated by Oliver Platt, the film utilizes historical photographs and primary sources, especially letters written by soldiers, to tell the history of the war from Fort Sumter to Appomattox. Also examined are the changes Americans were forced to make in the way they looked at death. Soldiers died far from home and from loved ones, and were often buried with no coffins or ceremonies or records of the grave sites. The government had no infrastructure for burial, no ambulance corps to assist the wounded, no systems to identify bodies or notify families, no national cemeteries, and no federal obligation to the dead. That all changed as a result of the Civil War. Faust and other historians tell the story, including accounts of African Americans who buried Union dead, the U.S. Sanitary Commission, Clara Barton who took medical supplies to the battlefields and after the war created a clearinghouse of missing soldiers, the work of Southern women who organized to identify and rebury Confederate dead, and the establishment of Memorial Days. Featuring exquisite editing, excellent narration, and appropriate music, this film should be an essential part of our understanding of the Civil War.–Patricia Ann Owens, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Mt. Gr 10 Up–Sixteen-year-old Anna’s earliest memories begin at age seven during the “tell-me-again” times. While snuggled against her mother, she listened to stories about how her mother always wanted a little girl. “Now I have everything,” she would whisper. A year later, the stories stopped and a wave of step-fathers began. Left to her own devices, Anna began to tell herself stories: “I had no mother. I had no father.” Fighting loneliness as a teenager, she finds temporary comfort in the arms of boys, earning the title of slut from her peers. Anna becomes a pregnant dropout, finds a minimum wage job, and moves in with her current boyfriend. One morning a “revelation” occurs. She is enough; she can write her own stories. No more replaying her mother’s stories or writing about the smiling families in pictures torn from magazines and taped to her walls. Anna’s story, stumbling yet steadfast, begins. She gets an abortion and rents an apartment, but still feels invisible behind the counter making cappuccinos for ladies with long, painted nails. Then Sam arrives—and Anna is anything but invisible. His family eats, banters, and laughs together. Sam is anything but temporary. Scheidt’s haunting yet poignant and poetic story (St. Martin’s Griffin, 2013) encourages girls to believe in their own importance and realize that their past does not have to dictate their future. Narrator Emily Durante beautifully captures the anguished and hopeful voice of Anna. A must-have.–Cheryl Preisendorfer, Twinsburg City Schools, OH

K-Gr 5–Known for their pop-rock style, Milkshake is Lisa Mathews, Mikel Gehl, Tom Moon, Cord Neal, Michael Sheppard, and Brian Simms. Their previous albums have garnered a NAPPA Gold Award, a Parents’ Choice Gold Award, and a Parents’ Choice Silver Award. Their terrific performances continue on this fifth album with outstanding vocals and instrumental performances on guitar, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, violin, viola, bass, keyboards, accordion, piano, bagpipes, tuba, drums, and percussion. Two-time Grammy winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer are guest musicians on a couple of the songs. In keeping with the album’s title, several of the 33 numbers are just over a minute in length and most of them are less than two minutes long. The album starts out with the high-energy rock tune, “Got a Minute?,” and continues with songs in several varieties of rock, country, sea shanty, folk, and rap musical styles. A sampling of the other titles includes “Baltimore,” “Lookin’ Out the Window,” “We Just Wanna Have Fun,” “Fish,” “Girls Wanna Dance,” “Starry Starry Night,” “Tip Toe Thru the Tulips,” “Snowy,” “Seabreeze,” and “What’s That Sound” (with novelty sound effects such as whistles, metal spring sounds, etc.). PreS-Gr 3–In their debut alternative children’s album, The Happy Racers, led by Nathan Meckel, prove that children’s music can be just as much fun for parents to listen to as it is for kids. Featuring original songs written by Meckel, along with children’s authors Barbara Joose and Peter Reynolds and Grammy nominated songwriter Burton Collins, this album embraces all of the fun and wonders of childhood. Rousing tunes such as “Move Your Body” and “ Hip Hooray Parade” will get children up and moving, while gentler numbers like “Lovabye Dragon” and “My Backyard” will assure children that they are safe and taken care of when going to sleep or having grand adventures as king of the backyard. Great vocals combine with a variety of instruments on each song to create a rich vibrant sound. Easy-to-understand, relatable lyrics will have listeners singing along. Gr 5 Up–Stone’s book (Candlewick, 2013) presents a history of racial segregation and integration in the U.S. military during World War II and a relatively unknown but important group of unsung heroes. Initially, a group of African-American soldiers served as guards at the Parachute School at Fort Benning, GA, while their white counterparts were trained to be paratroopers. Battling prejudice and resistance from military and political leaders, these enlisted men became part of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, and were known as the Triple Nickles. The fully trained unit was not wanted on either the European or the Pacific war fronts, but they served the war effort as fire jumpers in our Pacific Northwest. At first, it seemed that they were just there to fight forest fires, but, unknown to most Americans, the Japanese had started sending balloon bombs to our shores. Most of these bombs didn’t detonate, but they needed to be found and disarmed without alerting residents or letting the Japanese know that their bombs had reached our shores. The Triple Nickles discreetly searched the forests and disarmed the bombs to keep Americans safe. At the end of the war, the Triple Nickles were integrated into a previously all-white military unit. In 1948, President Truman ordered the integration of all military branches. JD Jackson ably narrates, bringing the account to life. Gr 5-8–In eight chapters divided into various aspects of coal miner culture and job types (nipper, breaker boy, spragger, and mule driver were the typical jobs for children), Bartoletti recounts (Houghton Mifflin, 1996) life in Northeastern Pennsylvania coal country around the turn of the 19th century utilizing oral history and archival documents. Although the focus is on the lives of children, first-hand accounts of adults who remember life as child laborers or miner’s daughters help to tell the story. Only the forward indicating her family’s mining connection gives a slight indication as to the author’s viewpoint about the industry. As in her award-winning Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler’s Shadow (Scholastic, 2005), Bartoletti’s approach is devoid of bias or sensationalism. No embellishment is needed for the stories of men crushed so badly by cave-ins that they were scraped off the mine floors with shovels, children secretly sabotaging company equipment to ensure a day at the circus, young boys losing fingers and limbs in accidents, boys playing with homemade baseballs and engaging in strikes, and mine owners who valued mules over men. The clear, no-frills delivery by Suzanne Toren is perfectly suited to Bartoletti’s style. The joy, the horror, the tenacity, the valor, the perseverance, and the loyalty of children growing up in coal country is presented, allowing listeners to form their own opinions. The only thing that could make this powerful audiobook even better would be the inclusion of the compelling black-and-white photos from the print version. With the current focus on Common Core Standards, this outstanding nonfiction selection fits the bill.–Lisa Taylor, Ocean County Library, NJ
