First published in 1983, Earthseed follows the lives of a group of teenagers who have been crafted from genetic material and are sent on a spacecraft, called Ship, to colonize an uninhabited, earth-like planet. The book was named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, an NYPL Book for the Teen Age, and a Booklist Young Adult Reviewer’s Choice selection.

Anticipating new readers because of the movie tie-in, Tor Teen books which reprinted Earthseed last year, will also re-release its sequel, Farseed (2007), in January. Farseed takes place 20 years after Earthseed, during which time the settlers on the new planet, have had children of their own. The final book in the trilogy, Seed Seeker (2010), is set decades later.

Sargent has won the Nebula award, the Locus Award, and has been a finalist for the Hugo Award. The author of 17 novels, she received the Pilgrim Award for lifetime contribution to Science Fiction/Fantasy studies this year.

Rosenberg plans to produce the film through her company, Tall Girls Productions, for Paramount. In the meantime, Breaking Dawn Part 2 , the last chapter in the “Twilight” movie franchise, hits theaters next month.
