The fall of 2012 was a strong season for new series in American history and geography. In comparison, the spring of 2013 has a small turnout. However, that does not mean that these books are also-rans. Quite the contrary is true. All of these sets are justifiable purchases: one provides a panoramic view, two discuss formative events, and the final one gives readers all the geographical and cultural insights of a long-time local by focusing on important waterways. The authors present their subjects with authority, enthusiasm, and an understanding of their target audiences. Librarians looking to beef up their 900 sections will do well to start here.

Gr 2-3 –More earnest than the “You Wouldn’t Want To…” series (Scholastic), and for a slightly younger audience, this set provides compelling details about day-to-day life in various American epochs. The simple design makes the books appealing to young readers. The accessible writing is straightforward and succinct. Paragraphs are short, and the fonts are large and plain. The main body of text appears on the verso while the captioned illustrations appear on the recto. The large, colorful images consist of archival and modern-day photographs, period reproductions, and maps. Most spreads feature a “Did You Know?” text box that contains an intriguing fact or anecdote. For instance, “One woman on her way to the goldfields was offered $5 for a biscuit she had made. When she didn’t reply at once, the man raised his offer to $10!” All in all, a first-rate series for budding historians.

Gr 3-6 –This series focuses on the building blocks of the United States. Five chapters in each book describe causes, pivotal moments, and turning points of important events. Viewpoints from opposing sides are offered as well. Information is presented in a succinct, age-appropriate style. “Straight to the Source” sections highlight primary-source documents: an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence, an excerpt from Benjamin Franklin’s speech to the Constitutional Convention, and so on. “Explore Online” text boxes challenge readers to think critically about what they’re learning. Illustrations consist of maps, period reproductions, and full-color stock photographs. Because the books cover a relatively small span of years, some content overlaps. The links listed in the back of each volume provide access to “routinely monitored” websites and a website where teachers and students can find supplemental information and ideas for activities. Gr 6-8–Events are presented in a straightforward style that still manages to convey the author’s enthusiasm for the subject. Readers are immersed in the time period; facts and figures abound. Details include battle-by-battle statistics (the number of soldiers deployed, casualties, etc.) for both the Patriots and the British. Military strategy is also discussed. Leaders and Weapons are the strongest titles. Leaders is a showcase of movers and shakers from both sides of the war, highlighting figures such as “Mad Anthony” Wayne, who while influential, receives little coverage in books for youth. Weapons covers a topic that is of great appeal to many readers. Period painting reproductions, maps, and clear photographs (many of modern-day re-enactors) make this series appealing. Given the abundance of facts, it’s disappointing that sources are not cited.

All of these series dovetail with core curriculum standards. Cherry Lake’s “Social Studies Explorer: It’s Cool to Learn About American Waterways” delivers a solid introduction to American rivers, bays, etc., and encourages young people to care for their natural heritage. Furthermore, it gives them a lens through which to view the politics, social mores, and economics that shaped the early years of the American story. The integration of primary-source documents in ABDO’s “Foundations of Our Nation” encourages children to immerse themselves in first-hand accounts that reflect period values and linguistic styles. The riveting details about the harshness of daily life in Gareth Stevens’s “What You Didn’t Know About History” provides readers with revelatory perspective. The logical progression of cause and event in ABDO’s “American Revolution” encourages students to think critically about the roots of modern-day American society and the consequences of collective decision making.

Gr 5-9–Set in 1776 during the American Revolution when New York was under siege by the British, Avi’s tale (S & S/Beach Lane Books, 2012) of resistance features an amazing female protagonist, trials aplenty as she tries to avenge her brother’s death, and a little romance thrown in for good measure. Sophia’s family believes in freedom and desperately wants America to govern itself. Her brother goes off to fight, is captured, and ends up dying in a filthy hold of a British prison boat. John Andre, a charming English officer who is billeted with Sophia’s family, fails to intervene to save her brother. Despite having a schoolgirl crush on Andre, Sophia is conflicted by his failure to save her brother. After witnessing the execution of Nathan Hale, Sophia is determined to help the American cause. Recruited as a spy, she becomes a maid in the home of the commander of the British forces in America. Sophia uncovers some crucial information and sets out to reach West Point before Benedict Arnold can turn it over to the British. Avi’s outstanding text and Angela Goethals’s spot-on narration make the Revolutionary War come alive for listeners, providing a real sense of the time period. A perfect choice for school and public libraries.–Joan Kindig, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA

Gr 3 Up–The sweeping scope of Myers’s free verse poems (HarperCollins, 2011) is captured beautifully and interpreted dramatically on this CD by a diverse cast of narrators. This eminently patriotic book celebrates free expression and attempts to paint with word pictures the depth and breadth of the varied American experience. Rarely are all ethnicities given voice in a treatise on American freedom, liberty, and values, but the panorama of people who built America is well represented here. In fact, the book alone, without the CD, falls flat with its oddly-proportioned, crowded murals in a sea of white space. It is only with the soaring music, stirring sound effects, and talented team of multicultural readers that this book’s meaning and powerful purpose come to life. When a Native American voices Tecumseh’s words to the accompaniment of reed flute and eagle flight, listeners understand their intent. From Jimi Hendrix’s guitar riff to the sound of boxes of tea being dumped in Boston Harbor, meaning is enhanced. Not a young child’s picture book, the complicated concepts, vocabulary, and mature images are best for older students. Charles R. Smith Jr.’s book, I Am America (Cartwheel, 2003), is a better fit for earlier grades. Annotated quotations and art notes provide helpful references, as do the author’s and artist’s prefaces. Useful for biography units or civics classes, the chorus of voices, music, and sounds tell the unique story of America and its people in 33 breathless minutes. Truly inspirational.–Lonna Pierce, MacArthur and Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, Binghamton, NY

Gr 6 Up–Henry Clay served in the House of Representatives and the United States Senate and worked to preserve the Union against the destructive forces of the slavery issue. The narration emphasizes the key events between 1820 and 1860 that led the nation to war. Using dramatic re-creations, historical documents, maps, period photographs and art, and stirring background music, the well-edited series brings the years before the Civil War to life. The seeds of the Civil War were planted at the time of the American Revolution and the writing of the Constitution. An industrial North surpassed the agricultural South in wealth and population. Westward expansion, first into the territories of the Louisiana Purchase, and later into land taken from Mexico in 1848, compounded the issues and forced the country to decide if slavery would spread to these new areas. Clay, the Great Compromiser, offered three compromises—the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the Tariff Compromise of 1833, and the Compromise of 1859—that addressed these issues and forestalled the Civil War for 40 years. Well-produced, fact-filled, and classroom-friendly, these programs should be a part of all library collections, especially during this sesquicentennial of the Civil War.–Patricia Ann Owens, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Mt. Carmel

America can be described in one word: diverse. The nation’s history, though short as far as other national histories go, is complex. From its conception as a refuge for religious dissidents to its 21st-century manifestation as a major world power, America has undergone breath-taking changes. Collectively, this season’s series chronicle the heterogeneous character of America. Some sets approach our history with an eye for important people; others illumine events, including the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s on up through the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, and/or examine specific topics in great detail. And, finally, some approach history by honing in on governance, civic involvement, and geography. With titles for students of all ages, these series explore America’s rich and storied development.

K-Gr 2–This series provides basic information about citizenship. One third of each page consists of a few simple sentences; the rest is covered by a large color photograph, map, chart, or illustration that complements the text. Most photos are of people and reflect a diversity of skin colors. With the exception of Songs, the information is accessible without being watered down to the point of uselessness. For example, Leaders states, “Voting is one way to be a good American….One rule is that you have to be 18 years old.” Songs is the weakest in the series; it relies on generalities, such as “Everybody in America is different, but we are all Americans. This makes us feel happy.” The titles are not detailed enough for reports. Nonetheless, when used as part of a larger curriculum, they are excellent starting points.

Gr 4-6–Designed for students new to the subject, these titles describe the political and social background of the Civil War. In the process, military strategies and key persons are discussed. A time line runs along the bottom of all of the books, listing not only events of the Civil War but also major events in the world at large. Each title concludes with a “Need to Know” section that reinforces the book’s themes by listing important terms, personalities, and strategies, including information about life on the home front. In addition, a “Test Yourself” page encourages reader ownership of the book’s content by posing study questions, such as “How did General McClellan gain an advantage at Sharpsburg?” and “What Amendment to the U.S. Constitution finally ended slavery?” Each title is profusely and colorfully illustrated with photographs, reproductions, and ephemera. Each image corroborates the accompanying text. These books are first-rate introductions.

Gr 3-5–From the early tensions wrought by the French and Indian War to the decisive days of the Constitutional Convention, these introductions delineate the Revolutionary War in a way that is compelling and informative. The sentence structure is short, direct, and engaging, e.g., “Spies used both words and weapons to fight during the war.” Colorful and captioned reproductions and photos, maps, time lines, charts, sidebars, and “Fast Fact” text boxes enhance the texts. Challenging words are defined twice, first in a shaded box on the spread on which the word appears and then again in the glossary. Colonists and Constitution provide background material, while the other volumes deliver topic-specific information. Women is the female counterpart to Heroes; Nancy Morgan Hart is the only person who is in both. Each spread contains two to four short declarative sentences and one complementary clear photograph or reproduction. A spread of related supplemental facts and a chart pinpointing sight words and content words are appended to each title. Also with each volume, the publisher includes instructions on how readers or supervising adults can access via a website a host of extra freebies including audio readings, video excerpts, useful links, quizzes, and “much, much more!” The on-line components are mediocre, with the short videos being the strongest elements. Gr 3-5–Focusing on action and drama, these titles highlight the lives of Civil Rights heroes. The author makes effective use of the graphic-novel format. At times, the illustrations are realistic enough to border on photo-realism. Each volume begins and ends with pages of narrative information and photos. The texts of the comic-style sections are easy to follow. Dialogue appears in white speech bubbles, while explanations and background information are presented in gray boxes. Shifting visual perspectives add interest. One vantage point is looking over Lincoln’s massive stone shoulder while Martin Luther King, Jr. addresses a crowd from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Another panel shows the contemplative face of Rosa Parks looking out a bus window, street signs reflecting on the glass. Unfortunately, sources are not cited. Still, these titles offer an exciting look at important history in an appealing format.

Gr 1-3–Similar in scope to “Our Amazing States” (Rosen/PowerKids Pr), each title is a veritable Chamber of Commerce. In a few short paragraphs per spread, the highlights of each state (geographical location, population, primary industries, landmarks, and early history) are described. A “Hometown Heroes” section focuses on famous people. A mix of modern-day and historical figures connects the past to the present. For example, Francis Scott Key and Michael Phelps are the notables from Maryland. A “Tour Book” spread suggests fun places to visit. A “Fast Facts” section includes date of statehood and other information. Clear color photos and reproductions flanked by stars-and-stripes borders are eye-catching. Simple, straightforward tables of contents and indexes are ideal for students just learning research skills. The content is well organized and the uncluttered layout and ample white space make the large-font text pop.

Gr 7-9–This companion set to the publisher’s “Understanding World History” series describes eras in American history with impartiality and candor. America is presented as a place of contradictions: a land with religious freedom and oppression, a restrictive lifestyle and cultural vitality, etc. An illustrated time line at the beginning of each title is followed by coverage of characteristics of the time periods and their precursors, major events and people, and the ensuing legacy. Concisely written and well organized, these volumes feature photographs and reproductions that are few but colorful and integrated effectively. For the most part, illustrations depict history as it is happening: a vibrant image of Paul Revere’s midnight ride; a prohibitionist emptying a barrel of beer into the street; and a stark black-and-white photograph of two black men, the victims of a lynch mob, shown hanging from a tree.

Gr 4-6–Each title in this engaging series is actually two books in one, right down to having two front covers and two indexes. One half of each volume describes events, people, and ideologies that represent one side’s view of a major historical event or period. The other half recounts the opposing side’s position. Using concise, well-researched content, this approach engages critical-thinking skills by encouraging students to look at issues from a variety of perspectives. For example, in Expansion the “Settlers’ Perspective” is that “they would be settling the land and improving it both for themselves and future generations.” In contrast, the “American Indian Perspective” is that “They felt cheated by the U.S. government and angry over how they were treated.” Archival photographs and reproductions, in both color and black and white, effectively illustrate the texts, and sidebars offer profiles of important figures and other relevant information. The simple layout helps keep the flip concept from being fussy or confusing.

Gr 9 Up–Broad in scope and deep in detail, this thoroughly researched series provides scholarly insight into three contentious subjects in U.S. history: slavery, the environment, and wars. Ten to 12 chapters in each title divide the topics into interesting and digestible subtopics. For example, divisions in Slavery include slavery as it related to the American Revolution, the Constitution, taxation, and westward expansion. In addition, each chapter presents arguments relevant to an opening question (e.g., “Should the Environmental Protection Agency have banned DDT?” and “Did Russia start the Cold War?”). Background information, maps, and chronologies provide context, and what-if scenarios and discussion questions encourage critical thinking. The scholarly writing and high level of detail might be more than what most high school students need. Occasional photos and reproductions are a nice touch, but do little to support or enhance the texts.

Gr 3-5–Sketches ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs showcase widely known African Americans, such as George Washington Carver, as well as lesser-known achievers, such as computer scientist Paul Williams. With a few exceptions, chapter and subject headings focus on accomplishments rather than people: “The New World of Computers,” “Making Integration Work,” etc. From book to book, the time span varies, and in many cases, the time line at the end of each title does not coincide with the content. For example, coverage in Activists ends in 2009, but the chronology ends in 1988. The uneven chronologies aside, these accounts are engaging and informative. “Did You Know?” text boxes and colorful photographs and fonts add appeal.

Gr 3-5–The purpose of this series is to celebrate the history and culture of Latino American and Hispanic American peoples. While promising in concept, the execution falls flat. There are a number of problems. First, generalities are abundant. For example, Folklore states, “Families in all cultures love their children, but Latinos do so especially.” Second, the texts are riddled with unsubstantiated statements: (“Salsa is even more popular than ketchup.”). Third, grammar is higgledy-piggledy. “Very” and “a lot” are used indiscriminately, as are exclamation points. Contractions and incomplete sentences are commonplace (“So does Incan attention to tiny details.”). The volumes can also be redundant. For example, in Spain, Moctezuma is described as “worried,” “nervous,” “troubled,” and “unhappy” all within three pages of text. Sandy Donovan’s The Hispanic American Experience (21st Century, 2010) is a stronger choice.

Gr 6 Up–From bluegrass to blue-eyed soul and bubblegum pop to hip-hop, readers discover the exciting evolution of music in America. Origins, influences, controversies, and artists are presented in a writing style that is engaging and accessible. Revealing quotes by artists are highlighted. Musical terms such as “melisma,” “grunge,” and “punk” are worked in seamlessly and defined in the texts as well as in the glossaries. “Must Download” playlists (which include songs that span styles and decades) appear throughout each title, encouraging readers to listen to the best music in each genre. Every title is packed with color and black-and-white photographs, snazzy fonts, and vivid sidebars. The indexes are not thorough (e.g., Pearl Jam has its own page, but the band is not in the index), but the books are short and well organized enough that this, most likely, is not a problem. This informative set will be useful for reports and of high interest to reluctant readers.

Gr 4-6–This series connects the dots between the wobbly-kneed pre-Revolutionary colonies and the robust world power that America is today. The authors emphasize that much of American history was determined by land: who owned it and explored or invaded it and how it was used. Though there are no source notes, their case is convincing. The series describes the political and social circumstances that led to each of America’s acquisitions of land. For example, Thomas Jefferson, not wanting France to settle in Louisiana lest Napoleon try to commandeer the American colonies, worked to acquire the territory instead. Text boxes contribute additional facts and ask readers to ponder questions such as “Who Owned America?” Though many are very blurry, the selection of archival paintings, photos, and maps are well-curated. Photos from period reenactments add a sense of immediacy.

Most of these series have a place in classrooms, schools, and/or public libraries. For the youngest students, consider PowerKids’s “I’m an American Citizen,” Weigl’s “American Icons,” and ABDO’s “Explore the United States.” For students who are ready for more substance and analyses, Capstone’s “Fact Finders: The Story of the American Revolution,” Compass Point’s “Perspective Flip Books,” Mitchell Lane’s “Vote America,” Smart Apple Media’s “Civil War Highlights,” and Mason Crest’s “Major Black Contributions from Emancipation to Civil Rights” would be helpful purchases. Gareth Stevens’s “A Graphic History of the Civil Rights Movement” describes important events in a format that is accessible and attractive. A few series are tailored for middle school students and older. Twenty-First Century’s “American Music Milestones” is substantive and has broad appeal. ReferencePoint’s “Understanding American History” is compelling, informative, and at times dramatic. Mason Crest’s “How America Became America” is a strong survey.

Every U.S. president had a mother. Most of them had children and pets. Combine these obvious, but often-unconsidered facts with a touch of humor and they spell can’t-miss booktalks.

Start with Beverly Gherman’s First Mothers (Clarion, 2012), a catalog of powerful women who had powerful influence. Abigail Smith Adams, the wife of John and the mother of John Quincy, urged her husband in a letter to “Remember the Ladies… Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands.” She was always willing to tell both of them what to do. Even after her son Lyndon became president, Rebekah Baines Johnson edited his speeches and reminded him to stand up straight. George H. W. Bush’s mother, Dorothy Walker Bush, was a great athlete. She disliked braggers, and she always told her children to remember how lucky they were.

Other First Mothers had traits they passed on to their famous sons. Ida Stover Eisenhower had brilliant organizing talents, which her son Dwight, the future general and commander-in-chief, inherited. Susanna Boylston Adams had a terrible temper—a flaw her son John shared. Abe Lincoln had two strong mothers: Nancy, his biological mother, who loved to wrestle and insisted he go to school, and Sarah Bush Johnston, his stepmother, who had a house full of books and a great sense of humor. The opinionated Sara Delano Roosevelt scolded her son, Franklin, for not letting her meet Winston Churchill, the British prime minister, who was fighting the Nazis. She wanted to tell Churchill how to run the war. Like mother, like son.

Joe Rhatigan’s White House Kids: The Perks, Pleasures, Problems, and Pratfalls of the President’s Children(2012) points out the pros and cons of being an offspring in the most famous house in America. The downsides include a lack of privacy, extremely busy parents, and the possibility of doing something embarrassing that could end up in the media. The upsides? You get to travel in Air Force One with your dad. Your new home has a movie theater, a basketball court, a bowling alley, a swimming pool, and a tennis court.

Some First Kids had personalities as remarkable as their fathers’. Abraham Lincoln’s boy Tad set up a table and sold refreshments to visitors by the White House entrance. Gerald Ford’s daughter, Susan, held her high school prom in the East Room. Ulysses Grant asked his son Jesse why he often showed up late for breakfast. “When I was your age, I had to get up, feed four or five horses, cut wood for the family, take breakfast, and be off to school by eight o’clock,” the president said. Jesse smiled at his father and replied, “Oh, yes, but you did not have such a papa as I have.” And then there was Alice, Teddy Roosevelt’s beautiful daughter. She attended formal dinners with her pet snake, Emily Spinach, wrapped around her arm.

Emily Spinach wasn’t the only unusual pet that lived on Pennsylvania Avenue, according to Julie Moberg’s Presidential Pets: The Weird, Wacky, Little, Big, Scary, Strange Animals That Have Lived in the White House (2012, both Charlesbridge/Imagine!). Lewis and Clark sent two grizzly bear cubs to Thomas Jefferson, who sometimes walked them on leashes on the lawn. John Quincy Adams kept an alligator in the East Room bathtub for two months.

Andrew Jackson owned a parrot that swore at his guests. The people of Bangkok gave Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes the first Siamese cat in America. William Taft kept a cow because he liked to drink lots of fresh milk, and Calvin Coolidge had a pet raccoon. Imagine the conversations this title will spark among your booktalk audience.

People have always been fascinated by how the heavily guarded White House residents really lived. Here’s a chance to do some snooping. And in a busy election year, these three books, perfect for fourth through eighth graders, will add a welcome human touch to your discussions.

Gr 5 Up–Endurance. Fortitude. Bravery. Any of these words could easily describe the people involved in this amazing, but little-known rescue-adventure. The year was 1897 and whaling was big business in America. Whaleship captains hunting in the Arctic Circle, pushing for more whales and the profits they meant, ended up stranded by the ice pack, affecting eight ships and their crews. One ship managed to escape the danger and alert the U.S. government to the predicament, thus setting in motion a nearly “impossible rescue.” A few daring men with the experience and willingness to tackle such a mission quickly gathered their supplies and courage and headed north to bring food in the form of herded reindeer and help to some 300 sailors stuck in the Arctic winter. Using extensive primary sources in the form of journals, reports, letters, and photographs, Sandler has pieced together a stirring and evocative retelling of this historical adventure. The writing draws readers into both the suspense of reaching the struggling whalers in time as well as the dire, life-threatening conditions that the rescuers themselves faced. Archival black-and-white photographs taken during the journey help pull the whole story together and prove an excellent visual accompaniment to the unfolding drama. An epilogue answers many of the “what happened after…” questions, and extensive source notes round out the back matter. For readers who prefer their drama to be true, suggest this title along with Jennifer Armstrong’s Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World (Crown, 1998), Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air (Villard, 1997), and Dolores Johnson’s Onward: a Photobiography of African-American Polar Explorer Matthew Henson (National Geographic, 2005).–Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA

Every anniversary of 9/11, we often remember heroes—past and present. Some are elected officials or military personnel. Others are everyday folks who decided to take a stand or try something different. Still, other heroes remain nameless but made an impact, nonetheless. The following books are full of heroes from the American Revolution. Perfect for reading in a history class, most of these are short, informational works with well-researched back matter that shouldn’t be missed.

AVI. Sophia’s War: A Tale of the Revolution. S & S/Beach Lane. Sept. 2012. ISBN 9781442414419. JLG Level: B+ : Upper Elementary & Junior High (Grades 5-7)

The only fiction book in this list, one could not write about new releases on the subject of the Revolutionary War without mentioning Avi’s new novel. He uses fictional Sophia and her family to tell the true story of Benedict Arnold’s betrayal and Major John André’s involvement in the plot to capture West Point for the British. After the teen’s brother dies while imprisoned on a British prison ship, she agrees to spy for the American Army in the guise of a house servant. Reading letters and interpreting notes, Sophia discovers a plot that could collapse the American revolutionaries. Who would believe their celebrated war hero, General Arnold, would betray his country? How does a 15-year-old become convincing? And who would have thought a lesson in American History could be such an engaging read?

FREEDMAN, Russell. The Boston Tea Party. illus. by Peter Malone. Holiday House. 2012. ISBN 9780823422661. JLG Level: NE: Nonfiction Elementary (Grades 2-6)

Maybe we don’t traditionally think of the participants of the Boston Tea Party as heroes, but certainly they were patriots. These unsung “heroes” took a stand against what the New England colony felt was the final insult to their civil liberties. In a picture book for older readers, Freedman retells the events of that memorable night in December 1773. Peter Malone’s beautiful watercolors partner with the text to add to the drama of the historical moment. Informative back matter completes the package and makes it an easy sell to any teacher or student.

KERLEY, Barbara. Those Rebels, John & Tom. illus. by Edwin Fotheringham. Scholastic. 2012. ISBN 9780545222686. JLG Level: BE: Biography Elementary (Grades 2-6)

“The true story of how one gentleman—short and stout—and another—tall and lean—formed a surprising alliance, committed treason, and helped launch a new nation.” Kerley’s latest picture book biography is a lesson in contrasts. John Adams skipped school while Thomas Jefferson skipped recess. Adams spoke out and could argue for hours. Jefferson was quiet, preferring to write down his arguments. They did, however, have one very strong belief in common: King George was a tyrant. Together they would participate in an effort to secure independence for a new nation. With wit and thoughtfulness, Kerley and Fotheringham tell a story that compares two famous heroes in American history. We can all learn a lesson from these men: different talents working together can create a new whole.

SCARBROUGH, Mary Hertz. Heroes of the American Revolution. Capstone. 2012. ISBN 9781429685900. JLG Level: H35 : Series Nonfiction: History 35 (Grades 3-5)

When you think of Revolutionary War heroes, George Washington often comes to mind. However, Scarbrough’s book goes beyond the traditional history books to tell readers about the many men and women who risked their lives for freedom. Part of the “Fact Finders” series from Capstone, this nonfiction title is just right for grades 3-6. It includes great illustrations and text boxes, and other features your readers will need when decoding good informational text.

Charlesbridge. 2012. ISBN 9781580892629. JLG Level: NEK: Nonfiction Early Elementary (Grades K-2)

What’s the most famous house in the United States? The White House. In an amazingly non-irritating “this is the house that George built”-style, Slade tells the story of how the iconic edifice was built. George held a contest for a plan for the best design. The winner would receive $500 or a gold medal. George himself often worked on the project by surveying the land and measuring the construction site. When the materials began to be too costly, he substituted other materials or changed the plan. Students will be fascinated to learn about building such a large structure in a time before modern machinery. They’ll discover that a kiln was made right on the site to fire bricks so that materials wouldn’t have to be hauled up the steep hill. Be sure to read the end material for even more fascinating facts, such as the ones that tell which presidents made additions to the house. The President’s House, as it was called until 1901 when Theodore Roosevelt renamed it, has been the home of every US president—except for the man who built it.
