In this age of high-tech magic, Harry Houdini is still considered to be one of the most astounding magicians of all time. His amazing tricks (some of which have never been accomplished by anyone else) are a quirky, but fascinating, part of our past. This site is an older-student-focused online exhibit with information about Houdini's early childhood, his experiences working in circus sideshows, his superstar status as a magician and escape artist, and his campaign to debunk psychics, mediums, and fortune tellers. There are also photos and films of Houdini performing. The "Teacher's Resources" link, with its PDF handouts and lesson plans, is especially useful. Kids will love the "Try This at Home" activities, which will give them an appreciation of how Houdini accomplished some of his tricks. Finally, be sure to open the "Trunk of Secrets" to play the Houdini trivia game. Warn kids not to try Houdini's more dangerous feats—but don't miss the opportunity to teach them about one of the most truly intriguing and original characters in American history.
