Dodie Ownes -- School Library Journal, 09/16/2009

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) recently announced three terrific online courses for the fall. The first one, “AIMing at Tweens: Advising, Involving, Motivating,” is taught by Teri Lesesne, a library science professor at Sam Houston State University in Texas. Another crowd pleaser, “Graphic Novels and Teen Readers: The Basics and Beyond,” taught by Francisca Goldsmith, includes a chat with Printz Award–winner Gene Luen Yang on his latest book, Eternal Smile. Goldsmith is an SLJ reviewer and director of branch services at Halifax Public Library in Nova Scotia. The final don’t-miss offering, “Reaching Teens with Gaming,” is taught by Beth Gallaway. Gallaway is a former Library Journal Mover & Shaker and an independent library trainer/consultant who specializes in gaming, technology, and youth services. With travel budgets being cut to the bone, these classes are a perfect way to offer your staff some professional development sessions without having to leave the building or break the bank. More details are available on YALSA’s Web site.
