From SLJ September 2004

Maren Ostergard, Bellevue Regional Library, King County Library System, WA -- School Library Journal, 08/30/2004

1 CD. 64 min. Diane Ferlatte. 2003, 2004 release. $15.

PreS-Gr 3–This CD offers an engaging collection of ten songs and stories told by Diane Ferlatte and featuring Erik Pearson who provides vocal accompaniment as well as background music on banjo and guitar. Pearson’s musical style is the perfect complement to Ferlatte’s storytelling. Ferlatte presents dynamic tales highlighted by catchy tunes. For instance, she sings an entertaining and unusual rendition of the ABC song that also teaches the numbers one through ten in Spanish. Other classic nursery songs included are “This Little Piggy,” “Old MacDonald,” “1-2 Buckle My Shoe,” “Who Stole the Cookie” and “This Old Man.” Parents and children will enjoy singing along to the lively renditions of these familiar tunes. The four animal stories, each 10 to 15 minutes in length, are “Half Chick,” “Frog and Snake,” “My Brother, and “Baby Turtles Song.” The stories offer up moral lessons such as valuing differences and listening to your elders. Ferlatte is a gifted teller with a wonderful voice and children, as well as adults, will be enthralled by her storytelling. This spirited and fun collection would be a welcome addition for school and public libraries.
