OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) ELLISON, Kate. The Butterfly Clues. 325p. Egmont USA. Feb. 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-1-60684-263-8; ebook $17.99. ISBN 978-1-60684-268-3. LC number unavailable.
Gr 9 Up–From the very first page of this novel, readers know that Lo is a girl with issues. While exploring a crime-ridden neighborhood on the outskirts of Cleveland, she steals an angel statue on impulse and hears a gunshot as she runs away. The next morning, she’s back in her comfortable suburban home when she hears that a young woman was murdered right where she’d been the day before. An interest in finding out about the victim becomes an obsession with discovering the truth behind her murder. In the midst of this thrilling mystery, readers also find out more about Lo’s compulsive behaviors, which include lying, stealing, hoarding, and behavioral tics like tapping and counting. The details surrounding the death of her older brother are also slowly revealed, and an awkward romance begins to bud between Lo and an older runaway. The strands of these story lines are artfully woven to a satisfying conclusion. This book casts a spell over its readers with its fast-moving narrative and seamless plotting. Teens will appreciate the honest and realistic portrayal of a character with complex issues, which nevertheless are not the main focus of the book. The excitement of the unfolding mystery and the unique characters make this a great addition.–Sunnie Sette, New Haven Public Library, CT

OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) FITZMAURICE, Kathryn. A Diamond in the Desert. 248p. Viking. Feb. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-670-01292-3. LC number unavailable.
Gr 5-7–Based on actual events and narrated by 12-year-old Tetsu, this story paints an effective picture of the harsh reality of what life was like for thousands of Japanese Americans who were moved to relocation centers after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The chapters are delineated by place and time, grounding readers in Tetsu’s journey and are broken down into short sections, some only a paragraph or two in length, affording a manageable way in which to digest the information. From the opening pages, in which readers learn that Tetsu’s eight-year-old sister, Kimi, refuses to use the open-stall bathrooms at the relocation center unless a pillowcase is over her head, blocking out sights and sounds, to Tetsu’s adjustment as man of the house after his father’s arrest, readers are immersed in the dusty, barren world of The Gila River Relocation Center, Rivers, AZ. Hope appears with new neighbors Kyo, Ben, and their father, all of whom share Tetsu’s passion for baseball, and they are soon engaged in a project to build a diamond in the desert. A team is assembled, and the author interweaves the spirit and familiarity the game brings with the grim reality of the life of the interned, culminating in Kimi’s disappearance and recovery and the Gila River baseball team’s win of the Arizona State Championship. Moving the story forward with fluid language and vivid imagery, Fitzmaurice hits home with this important piece of historical fiction.–Mary Beth Rassulo, Ridgefield Library, CT

OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) GREEN, John. The Fault in Our Stars. 318p. Dutton. 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-525-47881-2. LC number unavailable.
Gr 9 Up–“It’s not fair,” complains 16-year-old Hazel from Indiana. “The world,” says Gus, her new friend from her teen support group, “is not a wish-granting factory.” Indeed, life is not fair; Hazel and Gus both have cancer, Hazel’s terminal. Despite this, she has a burning obsession: to find out what happens to the characters after the end of her favorite novel. An Imperial Affliction by Dutch author Peter Van Houten is about a girl named Anna who has cancer, and it ends in mid-sentence (presumably to indicate a life cut short), a stylistic choice that Hazel appreciates but the ambiguity drives her crazy. Did the “Dutch Tulip Man” marry Anna’s mom? What happened to Sisyphus the Hamster? Hazel asks her questions via email and Van Houten responds, claiming that he can only tell her the answers in person. When she was younger, Hazel used her wish–one granted to sick children from The Genie Foundation–by going to Disney World. Gus decides to use his to take Hazel to Amsterdam to meet the author. Like most things in life, the trip doesn’t go exactly as anticipated. Van Houten is a disappointment, but Hazel, who has resisted loving Gus because she doesn’t want to be the grenade that explodes in his life when she dies, finally allows herself to love. Once again Green offers a well-developed cast of characters capable of both reflective thought and hilarious dialogue. With his trademark humor, lovable parents, and exploration of big-time challenges, The Fault in Our Stars is an achingly beautiful story about life and loss.–Ragan O’Malley, Saint Ann’s School, Brooklyn, NY

OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) HARKRADER, Lisa. The Adventures of Beanboy. illus. by author. 236p. Houghton Harcourt. Feb. 2012. Tr $9.99. ISBN 978-0-547-55078-7; ebook $9.99. ISBN 978-0-547-55083-1. LC number unavailable.
Gr 4-7–Comic-book dweeb Tucker MacBean fervently waits each month for the latest issue of his beloved superhero comic, H2O. When the publishers announce a contest to design the protagonist’s sidekick, the seventh grader sees it as the solution to his problems. The prize is a full college scholarship, which he hopes to win for his mother so that she can quit her job to focus on school and her boys–Tucker and his brother with special needs, Beecher. Standing in his way is his arch nemesis, combat-boot-wearing, death-glaring Sam (Samantha) Zawicki and the rules for the contest, which state that the prize cannot be transferred. Tucker’s superhero has the ultimate weapon–stun gas from emitted flatulence–but the boy struggles to uncover within himself the fearless heart of a hero to serve as the model for the key element of his superhero. Harkrader has created superb characters in a story that interweaves Tucker’s developing Beanboy comic and other illustrations, such as sticky-note communications between him and his mother. Fans of Dav Pilkey’s “Captain Underpants” (Scholastic) or Jeff Kinney’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” (Abrams) books will embrace Tucker and his winsome, quirky friends and schoolmates.–Michele Shaw, Quail Run Elementary School, San Ramon, CA

OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) NELSON, Vaunda Micheaux. No Crystal Stair: A Novel in Documents, Based on the Life and Work of Lewis Michaux, Harlem Bookseller. illus. by R. Gr 7 Up–This well-documented biographical novel presents the life and work of a man whose Harlem bookstore became an intellectual, literary haven for African Americans from 1939 until 1975. Through alternating voices of actual family members, acquaintances, journalists, and the subject himself, Michaux’s independent spirit, determination, and perseverance are revealed. Despite family pressure to conform to a religious life, he was restless, controversial, and questioning. Influenced by the nationalism of Marcus Garvey and the intellect of Frederick Douglass, he believed that black people needed to educate themselves as to who they were in order to improve their lives. He opened the National Memorial African Bookstore with “five books, a building, and one hundred dollars.” He accumulated works by black writers and talked to customers and passersby about cultural awareness and self-improvement. His bookstore attracted Harlem residents; civil-rights activists, including Malcolm X and Muhammed Ali; and political attention. But in 1968, this renowned Harlem landmark fell victim to a new state office building complex. Michaux moved his bookstore once, but facing age and another forced move in 1974, he sold his massive collection. Black-and-white photos add depth to the fictionalized biography. Detailed source and bibliographic notes depict the research process, while the text reflects Nelson’s skill of blending fact and fiction. Using extensive interviews, magazine and newspaper articles, church publications, books, and FBI files (tracking Michaux’s political activities), Nelson recounts her great-uncle’s enterprising and unflinching efforts to enrich and empower fellow African Americans. The storytelling format, candid perspectives, supplemental images, and historic connections bring to life an unheralded individualist whose story will engage readers.–Gerry Larson, formerly at Durham School of the Arts, NC

OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) PALACIO, R. J. Wonder. 314p. Knopf. Feb. 2012. Tr $15.99. ISBN 978-0-375-86902-0; PLB $18.99. ISBN 978-0-375-96902-7; ebook $10.99. ISBN 978-0-375-89988-1. LC number unavailable.
Gr 4-7–Due to a rare genetic disorder, Auggie Pullman’s head is malformed, his facial features are misshapen, and he has scars from corrective surgery. After much discussion and waffling, he and his parents decide it’s time for him to go to a regular school for the fifth grade instead of being homeschooled. All his life Auggie has seen the shocked expressions and heard the whispers his appearance generates, and he has his coping strategies. He knows that except for how he looks, he’s a normal kid. What he experiences is typical middle school–the good and the bad. Meanwhile, his beautiful sister is starting high school and having her own problems. She’s finding that friendships change and, though it makes her feel guilty, she likes not being labeled as Auggie’s sister. Multiple people tell this story, including Auggie, two of his new school friends, his sister, and his sister’s former best friend. Palacio has an exceptional knack for writing realistic conversation and describing the thoughts and emotions of the characters. Everyone grows and develops as the story progresses, especially the middle school students. This is a fast read and would be a great discussion starter about love, support, and judging people on their appearance. A well-written, thought-provoking book.–Nancy P. Reeder, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, SC

OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) PINTER, Jason. Zeke Bartholomew: Superspy. Bk. 1. 234p. (Zeke Bartholomew Series). Sourcebooks/Jabberwocky. 2011. pap. $7.99. ISBN 978-1-4022-5755-1; ebook $7.99. ISBN 978-1-4022-5756-8. LC number unavailable.
Gr 4-7–Zeke is a seventh-grade nerd (with a love of all things Bond, James Bond) who invents gadgets. Nothing exciting ever happens to him until a case of mistaken identity causes him to be kidnapped instead of cool kid turned traitor, superspy Derek Lance. The bad guys can’t keep resourceful Zeke down for long, though, especially when he is joined by girl superspy Agent Sparrow. The two fight to prevent Operation Songbird, the activation of a subliminal mind-control device disseminated via music video, from creating an army of kids under the control of the megalomaniac bad guy, Le Carre. There are mishaps, injuries, and some bickering between the professional, highly trained Sparrow and the amateur Zeke, but in the end, they build a relationship based on mutual respect. The action moves along at a brisk enough pace to keep even reluctant readers engaged. With the exception of the villains, who are stereotypically evil, Pinter’s characters demonstrate an emotional depth that adds a realistic element to the over-the-top plot. If readers suspend disbelief and go along for the action-filled ride, they’ll laugh, relate to, and root for Zeke. The bad guys are ultimately defeated, but Derek vows revenge and Zeke is sent off to spy training camp, so he’ll be ready for the next adventure in the series. Encourage readers to pack their bags and be ready.–Cindy Wall, Southington Library & Museum, CT

OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) REX, Adam. Cold Cereal. illus. by author. 422p. HarperCollins/Balzer & Bray. Feb. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-06-206002-0. LC number unavailable.
Gr 4-8–When Scott sees a guy with a rabbit’s head on the way to school, he figures it’s just another one of the odd hallucinations he occasionally experiences. It turns out that it’s the first of many bizarre events that include a snarky leprechaun, a Bigfoot butler, and a plot to take over the world with breakfast cereal, among other oddities. The story is filled with wildly imaginative elements and clever wisecracks, but the humor is couched within a rich, complex plot that’s filled with engaging characters and concepts. The narrative shifts easily between the present-day perils of Scott and his companions and the hefty backstory about the cereal company and the world of magical Fay creatures. The full scope of the multilayered plot unfolds with small and large surprises, incorporating alternate worlds, time travel, and Arthurian legend, along with the cereal cartoons and other silliness. There’s humor peppered throughout, even in the action scenes, as when the leprechaun gripes about the 20 quid that Kris Kringle owes him in the midst of a daring rescue. This first book in a trilogy ends with a satisfying triumph for Scott and friends, but plenty of dangers lie ahead if they hope to save both the Fay world and their own. Readers who enjoy fantasies that are equal parts hilarious and exciting will eagerly await the next two in the series.–Steven Engelfried, Wilsonville Public Library, OR

OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) SÁENZ, Benjamin Alire. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. 358p. CIP. S & S. Feb. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-0892-0; ebook $9.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-0894-4. LC 2010033649.
Gr 9 Up–In the summer of 1987 in El Paso, TX, two 15-year-old loners meet when Dante offers to teach Ari to swim, and they have a laugh over their unusual names. Though polar opposites in most aspects other than age and Mexican heritage, the teens form an instant bond and become inseparable. This poetic novel takes Ari, brooding and quiet, and with a brother in prison, and Dante, open and intellectual, through a year and a half of change, discovering secrets, and crossing borders from which there is no return. Two incidents, one in which Ari saves Dante’s life and his family’s temporary move to Chicago, help Dante understand that he is gay and in love with his friend. Yet, Ari can’t cross that line, and not until Dante is hospitalized in a gay-bashing incident does he begin to realize the true depth of the love he has for him. With the help of his formerly distant, Vietnam-damaged father, Ari is finally able to shed his shame–the shame of his anger, of his incarcerated brother, of being different–and transition from boy to man. While this novel is a bit too literary at times for some readers, its authentic teen and Latino dialogue should make it a popular choice.–Betty S. Evans, Missouri State University, Springfield

OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) WOODSON, Jacqueline. Beneath a Meth Moon. 182p. Penguin/Nancy Paulsen Bks. Feb. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-399-25250-1. LC number unavailable.
Gr 8 Up–This powerful, stripped-down novel chronicles a girl’s journey from popular cheerleader to homeless meth user to recovering addict. When her mother and grandmother perish in Hurricane Katrina, Laurel’s idyllic childhood in Pass Christian, MS, abruptly ends. After living with relatives for two years, she relocates to Iowa with her father and younger brother. There, she falls in love with basketball co-captain T-Boom, who introduces her to meth, or “moon.” The novel’s real romance is between Laurel and the drug; the euphoria she experiences while high fills a void inside her and helps her forget all she has lost. Her other relationships crumble away as addiction takes over her life. A poignant friendship with a street artist reawakens Laurel’s desire for human connections and propels her toward recovery. The narrative, which is full of rich, sensory images, jumps between the present day, Laurel’s childhood memories, and scenes from rehab, giving the story a dreamlike quality. Though this is a gentler read, it would be a natural choice for fans of Go Ask Alice (Prentice Hall, 1971) or Ellen Hopkins’s Crank (S & S, 2004). An outstanding novel that succeeds on every level.–Amy Pickett, Ridley High School, Folsom, PA

OrangeReviewStar.2(Original Import) CHAD, Jon. Leo Geo: And His Miraculous Journey Through the Center of the Earth. illus. by author. unpaged. Roaring Brook. Mar. 2012. Tr $15.99. ISBN 978-1-59643-661-9. LC number unavailable.
Gr 2-6–This heavily illustrated title is a fantastic adventure loaded with information for kids to absorb. Leonid is journeying to the center of the Earth, and Leo Geo takes readers along for the ride. The combination of humor, excitement, and science is intriguing and extremely hard to put down. Chad’s imaginative storytelling introduces youngsters to the Earth’s layers and sparks the desire to learn more about the planet. The introduction explains how to hold the book, which makes it more accessible for those unfamiliar with the format. The pivot point at the center of the Earth is enhanced when the book has to be turned over and read in the other direction. The physical object requires so much interaction that even reluctant readers will stay on task. The black-and-white artwork is totally engaging and the structure of the book is crucial to the story line. The trim size reinforces the idea that the journey is a long one and there is so much to see and do along the way. This is a must-have for libraries. Buy extra copies; you’ll need them.–Catherine Brenner, Bethlehem Public Library, Delmar, NY

Gr 6 UpAs the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic approaches, there is a whole new output of books reexamining and updating the information about the tragedy. This one weaves together the memories and writing of the survivors, and what makes it stand out is the intimacy readers feel for the crew and passengers. The story itself hasn’t changed, but through Hopkinson’s work, young people get to know and care deeply about the people involved. Children, stewards, officers, and passengers from all three class designations are included, and their stories combine to recount the events of that fateful April night. Readers with even a passing knowledge of the Titanic will find themselves drawn into the drama and heartbroken at the inevitable end. Period photographs, artwork, diagrams, and maps appear throughout to illustrate points and help clarify events. Traditionally accepted details about the ship from its construction to its luxurious appointments, are discussed, and some of the controversies that have arisen since the wreck was found, but the real focus here is on the people and the narrative. Students looking for real-life drama will find this an absorbing and richly satisfying read. –Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA
