Patrick McDonnell Wins 2012 Charlotte Zolotow Award
By SLJ Staff Patrick McDonnell's picture book about famed chimpanzee researcher Jane Goodall as a child portrays her as a curious, scientific-minded young girl whose favorite stuffed animal—a chimpanzee named Jubilee—presaged her future career. In Me ... Jane, the stuffed chimp accompanies Goodall everywhere she goes as a young child, while exploring the natural world around her and dreaming of someday traveling to Africa. The award committee also named three honor books: Apple Pie ABC (Disney/Hyperion), written and illustrated by Alison Murray; Meet the Dogs of Bedlam Farm (Holt), written and photographed by Jon Katz; and Naamah and the Ark at Night (Candlewick), written by Susan Campbell Bartoletti, illustrated by Holly Meade. The Cooperative Children's Book Center, a library of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, bestows the honors, which will be presented March 3, in Madison, WI. Established in 1998, the Charlotte Zolotow Award honors Zolotow's work as a children's book editor for 38 years with Harper Junior Books, and author of more than 70 picture books.
