Facebook this week unveiled a new Safety Page that offers expert advice, videos, articles, and other educational materials to help keep its users safe.

The new page-already with more than 12,200 fans-is modeled after, and will complement, the social networking site's Security Page, which was launched in April to promote best practices for maintaining data security and already has more than 2.2 million fans.

"The Safety Page will highlight new initiatives to keep people on Facebook safe, valuable educational materials from Internet safety experts including the members of our Safety Advisory Board, and relevant news coverage," wrote Joe Sullivan, Facebook's chief security officer, in a blog post."

Facebook created its safety advisory board in December 2009, and it's comprised of five online safety organizations: Common Sense Media, ConnectSafely, WiredSafety, Childnet International, and the Family Online Safety Institute.

The new safety page features a post from Common Sense Media, which talks about a new iPhone app designed to get safety information on the go, a video by a member of the Family Online Safety Institute called "What Parents Can Do," and a blog post about Facebook in the classroom.

Citing safety as a top priority, Facebook on April 13 announced a completely redesigned Safety Center to help users connect and share in a safe online environment. It offers new safety resources for parents, educators, teens, and members of the law enforcement community. The page culls multimedia content from independent organizations specializing in safety and security online.

"Online safety is a shared responsibility," Sullivan writes. "We'll continue to think of innovative ways to promote safety on our service and elsewhere on the Web."

This is great! Can't wait to get home to explore it as Facebook is blocked from my computer at school.
