Greetings!
Dodie Ownes
February is Black History Month in the United States and Canada, as it has been for the past 36 years. But the celebration's roots go deeper than 1976. And how cool is this? The event is scheduled for February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass! I never knew that 'til I started thinking about this specific issue of SLJTeen and doing some research. Some of you may have started preparing for this way ahead of time; others, not so much. This issue will give you a leg up—we have features on graphic novels, middle grade reads, and book tie-ins for the highly anticipated film, Red Tails, which tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen.—Dodie Ownes, editor P.S. School Library Journal has launched a national survey for public librarians about their children's and young adult services and collections, and SLJTeen readers are absolutely the smartest people in the profession—so tell us what's what! See Seen and Heard for more details.
