12711kidsgardening(Original Import)There's nothing like a garden to make a place look infinitely better. Now, thanks to the National Gardening Association's (NGA) Mantis Awards for community and youth gardens, 25 public schools and libraries will have a chance to do just that.

Past recipients of the awards include the Mill Valley Children's Garden at the Edna Maguire Elementary School in Mill Valley, CA, and the Historic Salem Courthouse in Salem, NY. A school, library or community garden offers kids and teens the opportunity to learn more about food sources, healthy eating, environmental stewardship, and local development. So, take a moment to consider applying for the Mantis Award (the deadline is March 1), and while you're at NGA's Kids Gardening website, look at the Adopt A School Garden program and the many resources available for teachers, educators, and parents. You know that empty lot next to the playground that just collects trash? This spring, it could be transformed into the new home of your school garden!
