Later this year, the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) will hold its annual conference in Chicago (November 17-20) and celebrate its first century of service. How appropriate, since NCTE was founded in the Windy City in December 1911! There's even going to be a birthday party on Saturday, November 19. This year's conference theme is "Reading the Past, Writing the Future," and there will be programs for teachers, administrators, librarians, and other K-12 and college educators, covering everything from globalization in second language learning to video gaming to sustainable learning for the future. Online registration is now open.

Of particular interest to librarians is the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents (ALAN) full-day workshops on November 21-22, featuring author presentations, research-oriented and classroom-based breakout sessions, and—always a crowd favorite—book signings. Although you don't need to be registered for NCTE's conference, you'll need to go through NCTE's registration form—look for session W.15-to attend the ALAN sessions.
