One public library and two bookstores are winners of the “Judy Moody’s Totally RARE Author Visit” contest, which comes with a very special grand prize—a visit from Megan McDonald, author of the popular early chapter book series.

Kids at Quail Ridge Books & Music in NC came face-to-face with a real tarantula.

The Laguna Beach Public Library in California, King’s English Bookshop in Salt Lake City, UT, and Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh, NC, encouraged children to read by engaging them with fun activities related to the Judy Moody series (Candlewick), about a feisty and independent-minded young girl and her younger “bother,” Stink.

Candlewick Press received entries from schools, libraries, and bookstores across the country that hosted their own Judy Moody Day events for kids and parents in their communities. King’s English Bookshop hosted a summer event that involved Moody cupcakes and Moody-themed games, as well as a coloring station and a temporary tattoo table. The pièce de résistance was a hand-decorated giant-sized Judy Moody Day banner.

At the Laguna Beach Public Library kids wore hand-decorated “I ate a Shark” T-shirts, made mood rings, had a Moody-themed scavenger hunt and water balloon toss, and enjoyed treats such as watermelon and screamin’ ice cream sundaes.

And the Quail Ridge Books & Music hosted a Judy Moody Around the World in 8 ½ Days Party, celebrating all things Moody with their Judy-loving patrons. Combining cultural awareness with Judy’s international adventures, attendees learned about exchange programs and other kids from around the world, danced the Tarantella, and came face to face with a real live tarantula—the dance’s inspiration.

“We are thrilled and delighted that Megan McDonald will be coming because we have wanted to have her visit for years,” said Carol Moyer, the store’s children’s department manager.

The three runners up—who receive complete signed collections of the Judy Moody and Stink series—are the Moline Public Library in Illinois, the Dominy Public Library in Fairbury, IL, and Horton’s Books & Gifts in Carollton, GA.

Winners were judged on their Judy Moody Day event originality, customer appeal, presentation, and community involvement.
