It’s a Hit! ALA Teams Up with Major League Baseball
Eric Oatman -- School Library Journal, 04/28/2005
April 14 was opening day for “Join the Major Leagues @ your library,” a joint effort of the American Library Association (ALA) and Major League Baseball (MLB) to promote libraries, 21st-century information-literacy skills, and baseball. Now in its fourth year, the contest challenges participants in four age groups to discover answers to baseball trivia questions in their public or school libraries and to submit their answers by mail or online by September 9, 2005.
By targeting a range of age groups (10 and under, 11–13, 14–17, and 18 and older) with age-appropriate questions, contest organizers hope to entice entire families to participate during the spring and summer. Twenty questions for each group become progressively more difficult as contestants advance from first base to home plate. Prize-winners at each level will be chosen in random drawings of all eligible entries. One grand prize winner will be awarded a trip for two to the 2005 World Series.
Librarians can access free online materials, including entry forms and trivia questions, by registering at www.ala.org/@yourlibrary/jointhemajorleagues. “Join the Major Leagues” is sponsored in part by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of ALA. It is a program of “@ your library,” ALA’s Campaign for America’s Libraries.
