Gale's AdAdvocates Public Library Support

Recognizing the need to show support for libraries, Gale took out a full-page ad in this week’s consumer magazine Newsweek in part to celebrate National Library Week—but also to rouse backing for public libraries during these troubled economic times.

“With what libraries are facing right now, the need for their services are greater than ever, as we’re dealing with the economic situation in this country,” says Linda Busse, director of corporate communications with Gale, which is part of Cengage Learning. “We wanted to be a part of that message.”

Traffic through public libraries has increased dramatically in the past two years as the recession deepened across the country. More than 25 million Americans used the public library as of January 2009, up from 20.3 million the year before. As patrons cut computer access at home to save money, and families search for less expensive entertainment options, public libraries have reaped the benefit. However, even as demand grows, public library budgets are being cut across the country from Philadelphia, PA, to San Jose, CA, and  New York, NY, affecting the level of service on offer.

For one week, though, patrons can enjoy free access to some of Gale’s online resources including Grzimek’s Animal Life, and Archives Unbound by downloading a free widget from their local library’s Web site, which librarians can access and post until April 17.

But Busse recognizes that support needs to continue long beyond this week and hopes that by placing the ad in a consumer magazine, the message will reach the general public, especially those who may not be following the situation facing libraries and are surprised to see how the economy has affected their local branch.

“We wanted to spread that message in particular to people who use the library but may not know how libraries are helping people,” says Busse. “This was definitely an advocacy message
