'Green' Grants for Educators
SLJ Staff -- School Library Journal, 03/31/2008
If you're an elementary or middle school educator with a great idea for going green with lessons about the environment or renewable energy, there's a $1,000 grant out there with your name on it.
LIVE GREEN, co-sponsored by Discovery Education and General Motors, encourages eco-friendly education by giving 40 educators $1,000 grants for their innovative ideas.
Educators in accredited public schools with students in grades five through nine are eligible to participate now through May 15. To apply, teachers must submit a 750-word essay online that explains how their lessons will advance student learning about sustainable resources and new and emerging technologies. "Essays should demonstrate vision, creativity and a novel way of presenting environmental and energy-related concepts," the contest materials say.
Winners also will be invited to participate in a virtual online professional development program promoting school-specific green initiatives. Grant recipients will receive free digital cameras to document their experience teaching "green." Winners, to be chosen by a panel of judges from Discovery Education, will be notified in June.
Also in June, the Discovery Home channel is set to become Planet Green—the first 24-hour eco-lifestyle channel dedicated to providing tools, information and content. Details are available online.
