  • 'Twilight': The Movie
    By Kent Turner - 11/20/2008
Nothing I say can comes close to the post-screening dissections of the tween devotees of Stephanie Meyer’s horror/romance Twilight (Little, Brown, 2005). (If you thought Harry Potter fanboys were critical, think again.) After the many months of hype, brace yourself for the backlash.. More

  • The Party Poopers: Teens will be teens, and we need to remind everyone on the library staff
    By Tricia Suellentrop - 12/01/2008

On the night of the visit, teens started lining up three hours before showtime. More

What’s the most popular drug used by teens? (Alcohol) Which illegal drug is most commonly used? (Marijuana, but there’s an increase in prescription drug abuse). These types of questions and more are likely on the minds of many of your students—and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is making sure that they get accurately answered. More
  • School Librarians Connect Kids with Galleys
    By Sally Lodge - 10/23/2008
FROM CHILDREN’S BOOKSHELF: It’s a win-win situation: publishers get middle-grade and young adult galleys into the hands of middle-school librarians, who share them with students in hopes of fueling their interest in reading. The kids’ enthusiasm for a title then creates in-school, pre-pub buzz about the book that can, in some cases, have a positive effect on sales. More

  • 'Discovery Girls' for Tweens
By Debra Lau Whelan - 08/06/2008
It’s not easy being a tween. That’s why Catherine Lee founded Discovery Girls, a bimonthly magazine that targets girls eight to 12. What makes it stand out? It’s all about promoting self-esteem—and a huge chunk of its content is written by its readers. SLJ spoke to Lee about how she started DG and why it’s the No. 4 magazine title at Barnes & Noble for its Family and Children section. More

The staff of Salinas Public Library (CA), aka The John Steinbeck Public Library, pose with Lewis Buzbee, author of Steinbeck's Ghost, a middle-grade novel that centers around the threat of the library's closing in 2004.
