I am the media specialist at Sanford Middle School which was mentioned in the Anniston Star article and in this article. I would like to make one distinction....we did not ask 2 twelve year olds to read the challenged book. We searched the checkout history of the book and found 2 twelve year olds who had chosen to read the book and asked them for their opinions and comments. The documentation we provided to the Anniston Star didn't explain how we identified the students and they didn't ask.

You know what is really offensive, is plain people making decisions that affect so many. I still remember being called out as a 6th grader and being told I was going to, "Get my a** kicked by an 8th grader. The reality, it was one hit from me, her hitting the ground and I was NEVER ever bothered all the way through high school graduation. Standing up to bullying was the answer. Parents time for a reality check. You allow your tween and teens plenty of computer freedom, but not the written word from an excellent writer with a good message. We have to stand up to bullying of all forms. Your censorship is a form of bullying. Shame on all of you.

Just here looking for some good seasonal books for our preschool. I have a couple for Winter that look fantastic by Barbara Ward, barbarabriggsward.com. They are The Snowman Maker and The Reindeer Keeper. Fun books for the younger crowd. IF you have any suggestions I would appreciate it!

My computer tech had to help me. He enabled the cookies and still got the result you found. Finally, he removed part of the original link (http://vshow.on24.com/view/vts/tys/tys.htm?cookie=true) I think he had to delete the part with the question mark then cookie=true. Once he did that, my system showed that the webcast could be viewed.

I ran the test and found that I needed to "enable my cookies". I followed the directions, reran the test and still was told that I failed the test. After a half an hour, I decided to go to the website to see if I could view the webcast anyway and I was surprised to see that I could. Unfortunately, I missed half the event. Did any one else have this problem and can it be fixed for future webcasts?

You just need a computer with an internet connection. You can run a system test on the registration page to make sure it all checks out and that your Flash is up to date. Hope you enjoy the event!

I'm trying to come up with some snappy remark, but in the meantime may I applaud Susan for her dedication and imagination. Getting children to read books is still incredibly important.

Some say that books are obsolete but I wonder how many of our current information storage methods will be useable in 200 years,. Now try 2,000 years into the future. As evidence, try the following. In 1984 to 86 Britain did "Domesday 2", a collection of data, sounds, images and videos for the UK which was stored on the newest"Laserdisc" technology as it "should be useable for a long time". In the 2000's they had to copy the data onto several new storage media as there were only a few Laserdisc readers still working, and the computers that the system ran on were museum pieces. Here's a link to to the Wikipedia article about it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Domesday_Project

Books on the other hand remain functional for centuries, and if you can understand the changes in language, for millennia. I can pick up a book printed in 1800 and if it's in a language I know, read it without difficulty.

I realise the event, Books for Boys, October 2, is in America, and I am in Britain, but I have to say it, politically incorrect and sexist though it may be - what on earth do three women, intelligent though they may be, know about what teenage boys like to read? Whisper it gently, ladies - BUT YOU AREN'T MALE! What next - a self help guide for women going through the menopause, perhaps written by a gay man? Boys don't read, BECAUSE THEY SEE IT AS GIRLY, and three women, however worthy their intentions, trying to persuade them otherwise, is simply NOT going to work! I await the knock on my door from the thought police...

School librarians are trained as teachers AND librarians who support the curriculua taught in every subject. Why wouldn't a high school want a school librarian? I can see why a charter school would love to be attached to a library with a much broader and deeper collection with such nice tech tools. Me, too!
