Sukey’s Circle! Vol. 3: Mini Shows. DVD. 33 min. Sukeymolloy.com. 2013. ISBN unavail. $15.99.
PreS–K–With her reassuring, gentle manner, Sukey Molloy delivers 15 mini shows that encourage young children to play, sing, and move. Each segment begins and ends with the series’ theme song, making these perfect to use individually during transitional moments between activities. Her original songs, along with some traditional ones such as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” will have toddlers singing along. Molloy demonstrates fun movements and invites viewers to perform them with her. A trained dancer, she makes her movements large and expressive, yet easy to follow. The set features primary colors against a white background. Simple graphics offer some variety, as in the “Puppet Song,” where Molloy catches bubbles against a black background or when she performs the joyful dance, “I Am a Tree,” against a backdrop of forest imagery. Molloy’s Sunshine family includes plush dolls, Sunny and Tick Tock, whom she addresses and asks questions. A spattering of brief stories illustrated with uncomplicated graphics reminiscent of felt board shapes include the rhyming “Five Golden Apples” and “These Are My Eyes.” Molloy’s simple and soothing offering is a welcome respite from some of the frenetic, over-stimulating programs that target young children.–Constance Dickerson, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library, OH

Timeless Thomas: How Thomas Edison Changed Our Lives. DVD. 17:22 min. Spoken Arts. 2013. ISBN 0-8045-8140-1. $50; CD with hardcover book, ISBN 0-8045-4239-2: $29.95.
Gr 2–6–Thomas Alva Edison and his inventive mind had a huge impact on society, perhaps more than most people realize. This is the focus of Gene Barretta’s book (Holt, 2012.) In the DVD, the author provides a live-action introduction, taking viewers toEdison’s workshop and showing many of his inventions. This provides a nice segue into the book itself, which is read by Steve Chiamadia while Barretta’s warm and humorous cartoon illustrations are scanned iconographically. The presentation is fascinating because it focuses less onEdison’s life than on his legacy. AtEdison’s lab, students are introduced to an invention and then shown how it impacts us today. The connections that are made are enlightening as viewers learn how Edison was instrumental in the technology that led to modern-day movies, batteries, tattoos, vending machines, and much more. Barretta also emphasizes the work involved, and howEdisonlearned from his failures as well as his successes. This fascinating presentation provides unique insights and thought-provoking connections.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary,Federal Way, WA

Gr 1–4–Kadir Nelson’s evocative biography (HarperCollins, 2013) of Nelson Mandela receives stellar treatment in this exceptional DVD presentation. The author provides just enough information to introduce apartheid and Mandela’s role in changing the political landscape of South Africa, while involving, but not overwhelming, children. Viewers feel the loss of Mandela’s father and his sorrow as he leaves home to attend school. His rise as a political activist, the 27 years he spent in prison, and his eventual election to the leadership of his nation are all told clearly in crisp and expressive text. Throughout, Mandela is presented as a figure both heroic and human. This, too, is emphasized in Kadir Nelson’s exceptional paintings that glow with an inner warmth. The iconographic presentation allows the audience to truly appreciate both the careful details and the subtle power of the illustrations as actor Forest Whitaker’s rich voice reads the story with background music and crowd sound effects that draw viewers in. The DVD includes an interview with the author in which he talks about his artwork and relates his boyhood experience of attending a speech given by Mandela. This excellent presentation about an extraordinary world leader merits a place in all libraries serving children.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary,FederalWay,WA

Gr 9 Up–Sagal, the find-humor-in-our-everyday-lives NPR host, broadly examines our Constitution in both historical and contemporary contexts in a manner that will transfix viewers. Metaphorically traversing the country on a red, white, and blue Harley-Davidson, his goal is to recount the perspective of the document’s development as well as to examine it in terms of today’s critical issues. “A More Perfect Union,” the first segment, describes the intriguing manner in which our federal system of government was determined and issues facing us today as a result of federal, state, and local control questions. “It’s a Free Country” studies the Bill of Rights, and the controversies surrounding those individual freedoms in today’s society are detailed. The Fourteenth Amendment, passed after the Civil War to guarantee equal protection for individuals and groups, and its subsequent landmark impact is the focus of “Created Equal.” Finally, Sagal leads a discussion about the vitality of this remarkable document from the perspective of the 21st-century social and political milieu in “Built to Last.” The nicely paced presentation uses a variety of presentation techniques, such as graphics and humor, to connect with today’s students. There’s also an effective balance of commentary from constitutional scholars as well as ordinary citizens impacted by this document. Several bonus sections add to its usefulness, particularly commentary by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Each chapter includes the scene selection option. English language subtitles and a Spanish language audio are optional. Both classroom teachers and media professionals will find this a popular addition to every school’s collection.–Dwain Thomas, formerlyLakeParkHigh School,Roselle,IL

Gr 3 Up–This quirky animated short by Canadian filmmaker and animator Andrea Dorfman and producer Annette Clarke tells the tale of a little girl with a big mouth. Trudy can’t seem to keep herself from insulting her little schoolmates by overstating the obvious. She’s brutally honest about pointing out the faults of other people, leading to difficulties in school and notes sent home from the teacher. A mysterious stranger helps her to understand that it is our differences that make us special and unique. The film is creatively animated using marionette-like cut-paper images. Bonus clips tell how the film was made, including the inspiration and process. Narrated in both English and French, this whimsical little tale would be a delightful addition to foreign language, art, film, and language arts classes, and could be used as a discussion starter about tolerance and compassion.–Lisa Hubler, Charles F.

Big Test Success: Motivational Videos for Kids. DVD. 45 min. Page Turner Adventures. 2013. ISBN unavail. $99.
K-Gr 5–Preparing students for high-stakes testing can be a challenge. Teachers spend considerable time helping them gain the knowledge they need to succeed. However, sometimes students can know the correct answers, but they allow other things to come between them and success. This program contains 15 short videos that speak, briefly, to other issues that can affect not only testing but also life in general. A female “storyologist” in an explorer outfit and a male wannabe clown in overalls who will be taking a major clown test, serve as the hosts in this live-action production. They go inside the brain of Ben, a boy who will be taking a high-stakes test. The episodes focus on relaxing, staying in control, visualization, avoiding perfectionism, healthy eating, exercising, maintaining a positive attitude, and self-affirmation. One section deals with basic test-taking strategies such as pacing, fully filling in circles, erasing completely, and making sure you’ve answered all the questions. The videos are somewhat sequential and should be shown in order. They are designed to be part of a school-wide morning broadcast, but could also be used in individual classrooms. When opened on a computer, the DVD also contains written support material. There’s plenty of gentle humor, lots of pies in the face, and good advice for students who tense up when testing time arrives. The cogent and kid-friendly episodes could lead to short classroom discussions that reinforce key concepts. Both teachers and students will enjoy this series.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary,FederalWay,WA

Gr 12 Up–If only Petr Ginz had survived World War II, his contribution to literature, art, and humanity would have enriched the world. Such is the sentiment viewers are likely to feel after watching this unique biography of a Czech boy living during the Nazi occupation. Petr lived in Prague, attended a school for exceptional children, read Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, and created illustrated literary fantasies all before he was transported to Auschwitz in 1944 and murdered at age 17. Despite deepening Nazi intrusions into Jewish life, Petr managed to create optimistic diaries and novels festooned with artwork. Cleverly disguised as “written by Jules Verne, illustrated by Petr Ginz,” he self-published the allegorical tale Ka-Du, a story about a mechanical monster designed to help its evil creators conquer the world. Clearly meant to parallel Nazi activity, Petr finished his masterpiece just before being deported to the Terezin Ghetto. There, he continued writing and drawing, even creating a cryptic code to record events. His life is retold by his surviving younger sister and through creative animation based on his original art. Black-and-white footage, stills, and family photos add to this affecting story. John Califra’s musical score sets the tone for this documentary about an intellectual youth undaunted by the Holocaust. Winning awards inJerusalem,Atlanta, andToronto, this film is an entertaining and powerful testament to a persistently positive and talented young man. An excellent choice for history, art, music, and social ethics classes.–Robin Levin,U.S.HolocaustMemorialMuseum Teacher/Fellow,Ft. Washakie,WY

PreS-Gr 1–Keith Baker’s incredibly inventive occupation-based alphabet book (Beach Lane, 2010) has been beautifully designed and hilariously interpreted by premier animators, Soup2Nuts. You will never look at little green peas the same way again! Tiny round pea people cavort about with delightful vocals by Crystal Taliefero and backup singers, including the Oakview Elementary Choir. The peas literally animate the alphabet, illuminating different activities and jobs for each of the 26 letters, beginning with acrobats, astronauts, and artists. They humorously demonstrate actions and occupations like climbers and campers; painters, poets, and plumbers; quitters and quarterbacks. The DVD is punctuated by infectious rhythms and rhymes that young children will want to emulate again and again. Baker’s colorful letters are constantly swarming with unique pea people. Turn on the read-along subtitles so students can follow the highlighted letters and words easily. A teacher’s guide is included, as is an outstanding interview with the author/illustrator. “We are peas! The alphabet peas! Now tell us, please, who are you?” This perfect lead-in invites teachers and kids to follow the pattern with other veggies.
Gr 9 Up–Filmmaker Ken Burns turns his well-documented talents to a more contemporary topic: the beating and rape of a white woman inNew York’sCentral Parkduring racial and class strife in the late 1980s. The news media applied incredible pressure on the city’s embattled police force to solve the crime which resulted in charges made against five Hispanic and black young men who were in the park that night. After each served prison sentences for the crime despite only meager circumstantial evidence and coerced confessions, another man’s admission of guilt was supported by evidence. This moving documentary of what came to be called “The Central Park Jogger Case” tells the story from the perspective of the five men with a rich mix of archival video and personal commentary from all those involved—public officials, media professionals, attorneys, and historians. This thorough review, typical of Burns’s celebrated style, makes an historical event understandable and relevant. Particularly effective are the commentaries by four of the five victims of what was generally considered to have been society’s compulsion for quick “justice” at the time and its resultant effect on racial relations nationwide. Some street language is used, but it is hardly offensive and fits naturally into the speakers’ milieu. The options of chapter selection as well as English and Spanish subtitles enhance the value of this resource for both classroom and library settings.–Dwain Thomas, formerlyLakeParkHigh School,Roselle,IL

Gr 8 Up–Three friends take off in a hybrid car to tourAmericain order to discover how we are saving or destroying our planet. In short segments filled with interviews, music, and often stunning scenery, the trio finds innovative green technologies and lifestyles that are being implemented across the nation. They travel to 50 states over the course of a year, and their experiences include visiting a living roof in Chicago, a mud home inNebraska, homes and other structures built with all types of recycled materials inNew Mexico, wind farms inTexas, a project inNew Jerseywhere packaging materials are made from garbage, and more. They interview many well-known and ordinary citizens who are working to save the planet and seeking to live green. Pertinent environmental problems and issues are also studied, including water usage, oil drilling, wetlands, rising sea levels, fossil fuel dependence, and sustainability in all aspects of our daily lives. One of the most moving segments occurs during the team’s visit inWest Virginiawith Larry Gibson, a well-known leader in the fight against mountaintop removal mining. Everywhere there are questions and viewers are asked, “How are we going to do it?” “How are we going to save the planet?” Filled with hope and humor, this production demonstrates that we can create solutions through community and individual efforts.
Gr 6 Up–In this made-for-TV adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic story, ex-criminal Jean Valjean seeks a better life for himself, but his efforts are dogged by the relentless Inspector Javert. With the young orphan Cosette at his side, Valjean flees toPariswhere, years later, civil unrest divides the city. Amidst the turmoil, Cosette meets and falls in love with the young noble Marius, Valjean’s true identity is revealed, and Javert is faced with an ideological dilemma that ultimately leads to his demise. In the end, Valjean proves to be the man he has always wanted to become. Gerard Depardieu brings Valjean to life with an intensity and fierceness that closely resembles the character Hugo created. Depardieu expresses his character’s inner struggles with passion, depicting Valjean’s quest for redemption with conviction. John Malkovich’s Javert oozes sinister intent and embodies the man’s obsessive desire to destroy Valjean with single-minded ferocity. When the two actors share the screen, their chemistry is palpable, thanks to writer Didier Decoin, whose screenplay retains the novel’s dynamic characters and moral ambiguities. The movie’s pacing and the strong supporting cast round out a superb production. Both fans of the novel and those new to the story will not be disappointed.–Audrey Sumser,CuyahogaCountyPublic Library,Mayfield,OH

PreS-Gr 2–The ant is hard at work when she hears the lively music of the grasshopper and his bug band. The music heartens her and gives her the energy to toil on. Upon meeting the grasshopper, she’s enchanted by his tuneful ways and invites him and his fellow musicians into the ant colony so their music can bring joy to everyone. This story by Rebecca Emberley and Ed Emberley (Roaring Brook, 2012) turns Aesop’s fable on its ear and celebrates the joy of community and music. Emberley’s vivid collage illustrations lend themselves perfectly to animation, and the exuberant jazz music takes listeners straight toNew Orleans. The DVD also contains a read-along option, but it covers large portions of the illustrations, even if only briefly. Stick with the regular viewing mode and enjoy a story that is vibrant both in word and picture.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary,Federal Way,WA

PreS-Gr 4, special needs–A technique known as “video modeling” is used to prepare all students to write their letters successfully. Developed by occupational therapist Marnie Danielson, visual demonstrations and rhythmic chants teach students (and teachers or parents) exercises to build gross motor skills, fine motor skills, focus and attention, and advanced handwriting skills. Each short segment features Miss Marnie leading a small group of students through a series of engaging games, such as “Obstacle Course,” “Save the Fish,” and “Tennis Ball Bob.” Each five-minute game is an ingenious way to build muscles that children with special needs or those with normal development must use to hold a pencil properly or develop hand strength. Clever short songs and chants make the experience pleasant, while addressing specific needs. “Push, Pull, Breathe” and “Squeeze & Breathe” are perfect to settle down and focus young children before story time. This practical program would be ideal for classrooms, homes, occupational therapists, student teachers, and professional development. Since the activities are brief, they can transform those tricky, transitional moments while addressing the needs of diverse students. More information—including research, results, and free downloads—is available on the publisher’s website (thetvteacher.com). Impressive, creative, and entertaining, this DVD could help improve the writing of all youngsters and be a groundbreaking resource for educators.–Lonna Pierce,MacArthur & ThomasJeffersonSchools,Binghamton,NY

Gr 7 Up–The life and accomplishments of renowned researcher and environmentalist Jane Goodall are traced in this documentary. Dr. Goodall first captured international attention a quarter of a century ago when National Geographic published an article detailing her observations of primates in Gombe, Tanzania. Her early work completely shifted scientific notions of what primates eat and how they use tools. Today, as a UN Messenger of Peace, Goodall travels the world educating children and adults about the importance of conservation and environmental stewardship. From humble beginnings in England to the world stage, this charismatic and engaging scientist continues to be a driving force in the call to balance human consumption with the needs of our planet. Her institute and international Root & Shoots educational foundation help deliver her message to hundreds of thousands of people each year. This vividly filmed documentary features archival footage from Goodall’s childhood and original fieldwork as well as interviews with her family and celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Pierce Brosnan. A good selection for upper middle and high school media centers.–Vincent M. Livoti, University of Maine at Augusta

Gr 7 Up–The historical and musical background of “The Star Spangled Banner” is expertly told in this program. Divided into segments, the first part, “The Power of Music,” gives a history of music and its use in storytelling. Facts about music publishing and biographical information about Francis Scott Key are included. Part two details the history of drinking songs and social clubs, as well as facts about the Barbary War and the Jefferson administration. “Madison’s War” relates the story of the British invasion of the Chesapeake region and their attack on Baltimore’s Fort McHenry in 1814. Key was a witness to the attack and penned a song inspired by the raising of a large flag over the fort. As years passed, the song began to be played as a national song, along with “Hail Columbia.” John Phillip Sousa often played Key’s song and in 1931 President Hoover signed legislation making it the national anthem. Historical illustrations, drawings, and maps are utilized throughout the program as well as interviews with Dr. David Hilderbrand, an expert in early American music; Dr. Ralph Eshelman, historian; Justin Reay, a naval historian from Oxford University; and Martin O’Malley, Maryland’s Governor. Also featured are contemporary songs and a stunning rendition of the national anthem by the Naval Academy Glee Club. This program will be an appealing new learning tool for history and music teachers.–Patricia Ann Owens, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Mt. Carmel

Gr 9 Up–Indigenous languages are disappearing at an alarming rate, especially in the United States. Yet, “Language is our first form of identity.” In this factual account, the Tewa Indian tribe of New Mexico makes a concerted effort to retain its Native language with the help of the Indigenous Language Institute. Five high school students signed on to learn and use Tewa language to better connect with their culture, history, elders, Mother Nature, and themselves. Led by a Tewa speaker, the students devote time and energy to mastering a language that might otherwise be lost. Their successes are shared internationally with other indigenous youth pursuing a similar path in clever language skills-building presentations. But, why are some languages in jeopardy? Historical factors include Euro-Christian dominance, assimilation efforts, consumerism, and numerous federal policies. Radio celebrity Harlan McKosato adds his professional weight to the call for language retrieval as uppermost in tribal communities. An interactive computer language program from Australia called MIROMAA is featured, providing greater interest and impetus to the Tewa teens’ efforts. This film helps in educating viewers about the critical need for tribal languages to be rescued before it is too late, and will work well with multicultural studies classes.–Robin Levin, Fort Washakie School/Community Library, WY

Enrich elementary school units on spring and gardening with And Then It’s Spring, a DVD from Weston Woods based on the book written by Julie Fogliano and illustrated by Erin Stead.

And Then It’s Spring. DVD. 8 min. Weston Woods. 2013. ISBN 0-545-57133-2. $59.95; CD: $12.95; CD with hardcover book: $29.95.
PreS-Gr 2–“First you have brown…all around you have brown.” A boy and his dog wait and wait in the gloom of late winter for the first signs of spring. Blue sweater and red pom-pom hat brighten an otherwise bleak landscape as the boy digs, plants, sows…and waits. Accompanied by his equally anxious pooch, a rabbit, a turtle, and a bird, he looks for some color of the season. “Is that a little green?,” he wonders, wielding a magnifying glass to a small mound of dirt. “No, still brown.” He also worries…have the birds eaten all the seeds? Has the bears’ stomping crushed them? While the young gardener bemoans the fact that the bears can’t read his “Please, no stomping” sign, viewers chuckle as one beast stretches and lazily scratches his underarm with the sign while another sits with a flowerpot on his head. A wish for rain works, resulting in a “hopeful, very possible sort of brown.” An underground maze shows mice and worms readying the ground while a “greenish hum” fills the air. Then the sun shines brightly as the boy hangs a tire swing and sways patiently. Walking outside the next morning to greet the relentless brown, he is happily surprised—“And now you have green! All around you have green.” Erin E. Stead’s whimsical wood-block-and-pencil illustrations are gently animated, adding to Julie Fogliano’s tender tale (Roaring Brook, 2012). The male narrator’s voice reflects the characters’ disappointment, hope, and joy when the much anticipated green finally and gloriously appears. An interview with the first time author reveals her Catskill Mountain inspiration and how she came to collaborate with Caldecott-winner Stead. Use to enrich units on spring, plants, or gardening.–Barbara Auerbach, P.S. 217, Brooklyn, NY

Gr 9 Up–The post-World War II era was a dynamic one in all aspects of American life, but perhaps none more so than in the fledgling technology that was impacting both our personal and economic realms. Just as our country’s creativity helped develop innovations to win the war, it continued to thrive, especially in electronics, space exploration, and computerization after the war. After the shock of Russia’s launch of the first Earth satellite, national energy became focused on pushing our domestic research even more. Farmland in the Santa Clara Valley outside San Francisco became ground zero for a number of emerging and expanding companies. This well-crafted program details the manner in which this growth occurred by focusing on Robert Noyce, a young physicist who surrounded himself with dynamic businessmen and creative scientists to light the fire of the electronic explosion that established America as the world’s leader in innovation. Particularly interesting is the manner in which these businesses adopted their unique sense of corporate culture in which creativity rather than traditional business convention was paramount. The producers utilize an incredible variety of vintage photographs and live-action footage, interviews with those who played roles in the movement, as well as commentary by historians to help viewers place the quick-paced revolution into perspective. Chapter/scene selection and English-language subtitles are optional. This stellar program will be quite useful in a number of classroom settings as well as for individual research or casual viewing, especially by those with a curiosity about how today’s technology revolution actually began.–Dwain Thomas, formerly of Lake Park High School, Roselle, IL

The young girl in the story helps with the family garden, which involves a lot of work for what she sometimes considers to be questionable results. (She does NOT like carrots.) Yet, as she works her imagination takes flight, and the garden she dreams of grows seashells, flowers that change colors, things that glow in the dark, and crops that would render you speechless with their size. The story circles back to reality, with a touch of whimsy thrown in, as no one truly wants to abandon their dreams—and—well, what if…? Henkes’s vivid and child-friendly illustrations are charmingly animated for this presentation as Cassandra Morris reads the story in a young voice that captures its mood perfectly. A read-along option is provided. This exceptional program will tie in naturally with plant and garden units, and serve as a seed for growing interesting creative writing assignments.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary,Federal Way,WA
