Sukey’s Circle! Vol. 3: Mini Shows. DVD. 33 min. Sukeymolloy.com. 2013. ISBN unavail. $15.99.
PreS–K–With her reassuring, gentle manner, Sukey Molloy delivers 15 mini shows that encourage young children to play, sing, and move. Each segment begins and ends with the series’ theme song, making these perfect to use individually during transitional moments between activities. Her original songs, along with some traditional ones such as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” will have toddlers singing along. Molloy demonstrates fun movements and invites viewers to perform them with her. A trained dancer, she makes her movements large and expressive, yet easy to follow. The set features primary colors against a white background. Simple graphics offer some variety, as in the “Puppet Song,” where Molloy catches bubbles against a black background or when she performs the joyful dance, “I Am a Tree,” against a backdrop of forest imagery. Molloy’s Sunshine family includes plush dolls, Sunny and Tick Tock, whom she addresses and asks questions. A spattering of brief stories illustrated with uncomplicated graphics reminiscent of felt board shapes include the rhyming “Five Golden Apples” and “These Are My Eyes.” Molloy’s simple and soothing offering is a welcome respite from some of the frenetic, over-stimulating programs that target young children.–Constance Dickerson, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library, OH

Gr 9 Up–Three friends who want to leave high school and move on describe their anguish in Cameron’s novel written in verse (Candlewick, 2013). Luke, who tries to stay out of trouble at school, spends his time playing cricket, works at the local supermarket, and hangs out at the beach. While trying to figure out where he fits in, he applies for a scholarship and traineeship to get out of school. Bongo spends his time getting wasted to block the memories of his younger brother, Dylan, who was placed in a foster home due to their alcoholic and abusive stepdad and drug addict mother. He’s tired of being around addicts and misses his sibling, so he runs away from home. Casey has a very controlling father, and she’s not allowed to participate in any school activities or have a job. She wants to get away and have some freedom, so she leaves home without saying goodbye. Desperate to leave their lives behind, they all choose to get “out of this place.” They learn lessons along the way and go in directions they never imagined. The story is told from alternating points of view by narrators Candice Moll, Leonardo Nam, and David Atlas. Their expert Australian accents capture the emotions of the three Aussie teens desperately wanting to live life on their own terms.–Janet Weber, Tigard Public Library,OR

Oblivion: The Gatekeepers, Book 5. By Anthony Horowitz. 17 cassettes or 17 CDs. 20:15 hrs. Recorded Books. 2013. cassette: ISBN 978-1-4703-5787-0, CD: ISBN 978-1-4703-5783-2. $108.75.
Gr 9 Up–The final book (2013) in Horowitz’s series finds the fate of the world in the hands of five teenagers: Matt, Pedro, Scott, Jamie, and Scarlet. They are the Gatekeepers. At the end of Necropolis (2009, both Scholastic), after entering a special door, the teens are flung to different parts of the world. They emerge into a dangerous and horrific world 10 years in the future that is beset by evil, torture, murder, death, plagues, famine, and other catastrophes, and on the verge of destruction orchestrated by the evil Old Ones headed by Chaos. To defeat the Old Ones, the five Gatekeepers must be together for the final battle. Much of the story revolves around each Gatekeeper’s struggle to overcome obstacles and challenges to make their way to Oblivion, a frozen, desolate area ofAntarctica where Chaos and the Old Ones are waiting. Horowitz’s story is fast-moving, intense, and unflinchingly graphic. Listeners new to the series will be able to follow this volume because past details are included. However, to fully grasp this tale’s scope and complexity, listeners should be familiar with the first four titles. Simon Prebbles’s reading masterfully conveys the terror of this dangerous dystopian world. His consistent portrayal of multiple characters and accents is excellent. This intense, suspense-filled conclusion will keep listeners riveted right up to the end.–Mary Olounye,Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

Nelson Mandela. DVD. 10 min. Weston Woods. 2013. ISBN 978-0-545-60947-0. $59.95; CD, ISBN 978-0-545-60948-7: $12.95; CD with hardcover book, ISBN 978-0-545-60949-4: $29.95.
Gr 1–4–Kadir Nelson’s evocative biography (HarperCollins, 2013) of Nelson Mandela receives stellar treatment in this exceptional DVD presentation. The author provides just enough information to introduce apartheid and Mandela’s role in changing the political landscape of South Africa, while involving, but not overwhelming, children. Viewers feel the loss of Mandela’s father and his sorrow as he leaves home to attend school. His rise as a political activist, the 27 years he spent in prison, and his eventual election to the leadership of his nation are all told clearly in crisp and expressive text. Throughout, Mandela is presented as a figure both heroic and human. This, too, is emphasized in Kadir Nelson’s exceptional paintings that glow with an inner warmth. The iconographic presentation allows the audience to truly appreciate both the careful details and the subtle power of the illustrations as actor Forest Whitaker’s rich voice reads the story with background music and crowd sound effects that draw viewers in. The DVD includes an interview with the author in which he talks about his artwork and relates his boyhood experience of attending a speech given by Mandela. This excellent presentation about an extraordinary world leader merits a place in all libraries serving children.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary,FederalWay,WA

Brilliance Audio. 2013. ISBN 978-1-4692-7493-5. $54.97.
Gr 5–8–The first novel (Candlewick, 2013) by octogenarian Shirley Hughes, the award-winning picture book author and illustrator, is set inItalyin 1944. The story follows 13-year-old Paolo, his 16-year-old sister Costanza, and their mother. The family lives in the outskirts of Nazi-occupied Florence. Their father, an anti-Fascist, fled when the Nazi’s took control, leaving the family in a politically precarious position. Paolo’s nighttime forays into the city on his bicycle have brought his family into contact with the Partisans, the Italian resistance, who ask them “in a convincing manner, made more convincing because of the gun” to help them. Told in third-person narration, the story builds in tension, skillfully shifting between the perspectives of each main character as well as the many well-developed secondary characters who add depth and understanding to an age-old question this story seeks to answer: What motivates people’s actions in times of war? Simon Vance’s incomparable vocal style is a perfect fit for this intense and suspenseful work of historical fiction. With his strong and consistently paced narration, as well as subtle and skillful character voices, Vance’s performance is both nuanced and captivating. A website (www.heroonabicycle.co.uk) offers additional material to supplement lesson plans or deepen book discussions. For those interested in offering students more in-depth information about the time period, other supplemental sources would be required. Highly recommended for students who enjoyed John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (David Fickling Bks., 2007) and historical or WWII fiction.–Chani Craig.ConverseMiddle School. But a mid-tour breakup has fans wondering if The Civil Wars will ever make another album. SLJ's teen reviewers weigh in.

Country music fans will be delighted with these featured albums from Luke Bryan and The Civil Wars. While Luke Bryan garnered Male Vocalist of the Year and Best Album of the Year in 2012 from the Country Music Association, The Civil Wars won Musical Event of the Year and Vocal Duo of the Year. You can bet on seeing these two acts on the ballot for the upcoming CMA Awards on November 6, hosted by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood.

Crash My Party, Luke Bryan (Capital/Nashville)

Crash My Party is the fourth studio album from Bryan, ACM Entertainer of the Year. This album continues Bryan’s easygoing county style with likable, risk-free songs that fans have come to expect from him. His addictive vocals and natural charm mixed with memorable country lyrics are the perfect recipe for success. His sound is effortless, with acoustics and harmonies that tend to stay with you long after the song is over. Some critics feel he needs to branch out of his comfort zone, but when he does on the two tracks “I See You,” and That’s My Kind of Night,” he seems to be missing something. I say stick with what works and continue to do it well. Check out “Crash My Party,” “Roller Coaster,” “Blood Brothers,” and “Out Like That.”—Uma N., grade 11, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School

The Civil Wars, The Civil Wars (Sensibility Music/Columbia)

When The Civil Wars made their debut in 2011, the alt-country duo of rocker John Paul White and Christian music artist Joy Williams received lots of praise and support. Their recently released self-titled second album, while consolidating their strengths, comes at a difficult time for the duo. After splitting during their European tour last winter, no one knows if they will work together again. This seems even more of a tragedy as many of the tracks on this album speak of heartache, loss, and the sense for the need to move on. White and Williams pump power into their acoustic base and varied tempos. The album exudes confidence and focus with strong vocals, but is darker and lacks the passion and intimacy we have seen before. Hopefully, The Civil Wars can reunite and overcome their adversity and continue to make great music. Check out “D’Arline,” “Disarm,” “The One That Got Away,” and “Same Old, Same Old.”—Nick M., grade 10, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School

Gr 9 Up–Sagal, the find-humor-in-our-everyday-lives NPR host, broadly examines our Constitution in both historical and contemporary contexts in a manner that will transfix viewers. Metaphorically traversing the country on a red, white, and blue Harley-Davidson, his goal is to recount the perspective of the document’s development as well as to examine it in terms of today’s critical issues. “A More Perfect Union,” the first segment, describes the intriguing manner in which our federal system of government was determined and issues facing us today as a result of federal, state, and local control questions. “It’s a Free Country” studies the Bill of Rights, and the controversies surrounding those individual freedoms in today’s society are detailed. The Fourteenth Amendment, passed after the Civil War to guarantee equal protection for individuals and groups, and its subsequent landmark impact is the focus of “Created Equal.” Finally, Sagal leads a discussion about the vitality of this remarkable document from the perspective of the 21st-century social and political milieu in “Built to Last.” The nicely paced presentation uses a variety of presentation techniques, such as graphics and humor, to connect with today’s students. There’s also an effective balance of commentary from constitutional scholars as well as ordinary citizens impacted by this document. Several bonus sections add to its usefulness, particularly commentary by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Each chapter includes the scene selection option. English language subtitles and a Spanish language audio are optional.
This excellent presentation about an extraordinary world leader merits a place in all libraries serving children.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary, Federal Way, WA

Gr 5–8–The first novel (Candlewick, 2013) by octogenarian Shirley Hughes, the award-winning picture book author and illustrator, is set in Italy in 1944. Highly recommended for students who enjoyed John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (David Fickling Bks., 2007) and historical or WWII fiction.–Chani Craig.
Gr 9 Up–The final book (2013) in Horowitz’s seriHes finds the fate of the world in the hands of five teenagers: Matt, Pedro, Scott, Jamie, and Scarlet. Much of the story revolves around each Gatekeeper’s struggle to overcome obstacles and challenges to make their way to Oblivion, a frozen, desolate area of Antarctica where Chaos and the Old Ones are waiting. This intense, suspense-filled conclusion will keep listeners riveted right up to the end.–Mary Olounye, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

Their expert Australian accents capture the emotions of the three Aussie teens desperately wanting to live life on their own terms.–Janet Weber, Tigard Public Library, OR

Gr 7 Up–Orphaned from the Border Wars, Alina was raised by strangers with her only friend, Mal. Drafted into the army of war-torn Rafka, the pair joins their regiment on a dangerous mission into the Fold, a place where darkness reigns and nobody survives the attacks of its native, nightmarish creatures. When the two friends are attacked, Alina inadvertently summons her dormant magical powers to save her regiment. She is ripped from everything she knows and sent to be trained as a Grisha in the court of the Darkling, the most powerful magic wielder. Cut off from contact with Mal, Alina has a hard time learning to use her power. When she discovers the Darkling’s plan to enslave her in order to destroy all who oppose him, she must figure out a way to stop him and find her way back to Mal. Will she learn to wield her power and save Rafka before it’s too late? Narrator Amanda Dolan masterfully brings Alina’s world of magic and monsters to life. Bardugo’s well-developed characters in this debut novel (Holt, 2012) are enhanced by the narrator’s unique voices and intonations. The transitions between action and suspense are incredible, and listeners will be totally engrossed. The twists throughout this unique plot are expertly handled by both author and narrator and keep listeners guessing.
Gr 2-5–How many kinds of ice are there during the winter? It starts with that faint crinkly sheen that breaks at a touch. Gradually, however, ice spreads over fields and ponds. It grows thicker as the cold seeps deep. Finally, it’s time for the family to set the boundaries, stomp the snow, spray the water, and create the ice rink that will be their entertainment center for hockey and skating until the same progression that began the ice reverses, and the world warms again. While the ice goes from a thin sheet to a frozen stream, the house becomes a warming area, a locker room, and a sports center. All activities revolve around the ice. Obed’s book (Houghton Harcourt, 2012) contains 20 very short chapters that skim beautifully over each type of ice and the activities that follow. The author evokes all the senses with carefully chosen spare text. Jessica Almasy reads the story in a youthful voice, drawing listeners in until they, too, are skimming smoothly across this annual magic of the winter season. An evocative, joyful celebration of winter.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary, Federal Way, WA

PreS–Gr 3–Classic rock, power pop, ska, and country musical styles are evident in these 12 original songs by Roberts. The Not Ready for Naptime Players join him in giving outstanding instrumental performances on guitar, bass, piano, strings, keyboards, trumpet, drums, and percussion. They also weave beautiful and intricate vocal harmonies, with some tracks sounding like the early Beatles or the Beach Boys. Winner of multiple Parents’ Choice Gold and NAPPA Gold awards, Roberts has created wonderful, catchy tunes. The students are anxious for “Recess” time. Listeners get the dog’s point of view in “Every Little Step.” In a faraway kingdom, everyone wears drab beige, sandalwood, and sage colors until “The Princess Wore Pink” and changed everything. One child anticipates with eagerness his weekly visit to “Otis” the elevator. And in “Check Me Out, I’m at the Checkout,” a kid pushes his own cart and makes messes throughout the grocery store. Among the other terrific numbers are “I’ll Be an Alien” (the extra-terrestrial kind), “Hopscotch,” “My Secret Robot,” “Looking for Trains,” “We Got Two” (twins), “School’s Out (Tall Buildings),” and “Red Bird” (a lovely lullaby with beautiful, poetic lyrics). This album stands head and shoulders above other recent pop albums for children.–Beverly Wrigglesworth, San Antonio Public Library, TX

Orphan Train Rider: One Boy’s True Story. By Andrea Warren. 2 CDs. 1:26 hrs. AudioGo. 2013. ISBN 978-0-7927-9640-4. $29.95.”
Gr 4-7–Using one young man’s journey as her focus,Warren tells about the amazing, sometimes heart-warming, and often tragic westward journey (Houghton Mifflin, 1996) that more than 200,000 children took on the Orphan Train between 1854 and1930 insearch of families. Although he was not technically an orphan, Lee Nailling’s father placed him and his brothers in an orphanage after their mother’s death. Dressed in new clothes, Lee rode the train from Upstate New York toTexasin 1926 with two of his six siblings. Not all children found homes, and many were taken in by families who abused them or used them as workers. Lee was lucky to have been placed with loving and understanding parents who renamed him and raised him as their own; he was luckier still to be reunited with some of his siblings late in his life. Chapters alternate between Lee’s experiences and the history of the Orphan Trains, the Children’s Aid Society, and other agencies that placed orphaned or homeless children with rural families. Laura Hicks expressively tells Lee’s emotional tale and exhibits the same enthusiasm when relating dates and facts, varying her inflection for quotes and narration. Have the book available so listeners can peruse the black-and-white photographs and reproductions. This compelling true story, skillfully researched and narrated, will be of great interest to young people.–MaryAnn Karre,West Middle School,Binghamton,NY

Darius and Twig. By Walter Dean Myers. 4 cassettes or 4 CDs: 4:15 hrs. Recorded Books. 2013. cassette: ISBN 978-1-4703-6203-4, CD: ISBN 978-1-61976. $46.75.
Gr 8 Up–Darius and Twig both dream of leaving their poor neighborhood for better and safer lives. In a world where the “hoodies” with their drugs, guns, and agendas are slowly taking over, the pair band together to spur each other on to be the best so that they might earn college scholarships and leave the hood. Twig, a prodigy runner, struggles with balancing his love for running with the competitive field that he must enter if he wants to earn a scholarship. Darius, a gifted writer, strives to publish his work in order to gain the attention he needs for college offers. Each teen finds solace in the other’s support. When one of the bullies from their school is shot, Darius feels that he must get involved, even though it could endanger his goal. Narrator Brandon Gill does a great job differentiating between the two boys as they make their way through the obstacles set before them. His delivery suits the story’s slow and thoughtful pace, letting listeners stop to consider the same choices that Darius and Twig must make along their emotional journey. Listeners will root for the boys’ success and many will find themselves relating easily to the problems they face in their lower socioeconomic neighborhood. This novel (Amistad, 2013) is a good choice for high school and public libraries in urban settings or where Myers is a popular author.–Jessica Miller, West Springfield Public Library, MA

Gr 5-7–Gravity, quasars, the formation of black holes, and the meaning of event horizon are just some of the ideas covered in the impressive scope of this book (Charlesbridge, 2012). DeCristofano does a commendable job of introducing concepts that are difficult to visualize and making them accessible by providing examples with which students can identify. For example, the type of snow used in snowballs helps describe density of matter and whirlpools are used to explain the pull of black holes. Many scientists and their work are introduced including Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Grote Reber, a pioneer of the radio telescope. Ideas like a black hole being lumpy or smooth depending on the collapsing star it comes from and the concept of “spaghettification,” the stretching out of objects, will intrigue students. The author’s conversational tone and infusion of humor will hook listeners. Maxell Glick, Tara Sands, and Everette Plen provide well-paced narration; Plen makes occasional comic quips. There’s a four-page glossary at the end that provides succinct definitions. Make sure to have the book available so listeners can peruse the illustrations, diagrams, charts, and photos.–C. A.
Teens review something old (Marc Anthony's return to his salsa roots), something new (rising star Selena Gomez), and something that just might scare the bejeezus out of you (The Walking Dead: 400 Days).

If you’re under the age of 20, you might only know Marc Anthony for his clothing line, or that his ex-wife is Jennifer Lopez (who also has a clothing line). On 3.0, he returns to his Latin roots, which will appeal to salsa fans. If you’re over the age of 20, you might only know Selena Gomez as Justin Bieber’s girlfriend, but our reviewer thinks that Stars Dance proves that she has a lot more going for her than that. And it seems like we will never run out of new games for zombie fans, as demonstrated by the latest release, The Walking Dead: 400 Days.

3.0, Marc Anthony (Sony Music Latin)

Marc Anthony has had a long and successful career; having sold more 11 million albums worldwide. Many consider him a top player in the industry and a true diplomat of Latin music. His newest album, 3.0, is his 11th studio album to date and is very much what fans of his expect—an integration of pop, samba, and Latin folk sound. What Anthony does add on 3.0 is a little more emphasis on pure salsa. Continued collaboration with longtime partner Sergio George on the production end helps Anthony put forth a solid album. As a Marc Anthony fan, I found the album to be a great listening experience with passionate vocals, romantic charm all rolled up in a hypnotic dance beat. But I recognize that his days of mainstream pop chart toppers are probably over. This album is more for salsa purists and fans of Latin music, as listening to the whole album can sound a little bland and repetitious. Check out the following tracks: “Volver a Comenzar,” “Cautivo de Este Amor,” and “Vivir Mi Vida.”—Latyese M., Grade 12, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School

Stars Dance, Selena Gomez (Hollywood)

Stars Dance is Gomez’s fourth studio album but her first solo attempt and the results are acceptable. Having watched Gomez’s rise to stardom on Disney’s The Wizards of Waverly Place, I can say that I am a fan of hers and would like to see her succeed. And in many ways she does. This album shreds the Disney image and launches her into the adult world. Gomez shows her take on electronic dance music with her own blend of synth and electro pop. She tries to bridge the gap between her two worlds with music that will find a following with her teen fans and their parents. It is a big risk and although the album is nothing earth shattering, her music is accessible, danceable, and pretty memorable. Stars Dance proves that Gomez has the staying power to play in the big league, and with a little more work she can definitely give her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Justin Bieber, a run for his money. Tracks to check out are “Come & Get It,” “Slow Down,” “Birthday,” and “Love Will Remember.”—Ryan A., Grade 10, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School

The Walking Dead: 400 Days (Tell Tale Games)

If you are a zombie fan or a Walking Dead fan, this game is for you. 400 Days is really a bridge game between Season 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead: The Game and comes at a bargain price. Like other Walking Dead games, the focus here is on the strong narrative over shooting or gore and horror. In this installment, you play as one of five different characters within five different stories. Each one takes place at some point in time within a 400-day span at a truck stop in Georgia. Missing posters line a littered bulletin board where you select your character in any random order.

One episode can start on the Day 200 of the apocalypse while another might start on Day Two of the outbreak. Each one does have a common piece that links them together and the game does not seem disjointed or confusing. What is really cool is that the game play in each vignette does not seem repetitive or boring. That is due to the choice system that is built into The Walking Dead gaming system. The only disappointment here is that 400 Days is so concentrated that it only takes about a hour and a half to get through all five vignettes. Again, it is a bridge game, so you kind of know this but of course you still want more. The action and drama are definitely worth it. Rated: M for Mature. Platform: Play Station 3, Xbox 360 and PC.—James M., Grade 11, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School

Gr 3 Up–This quirky animated short by Canadian filmmaker and animator Andrea Dorfman and producer Annette Clarke tells the tale of a little girl with a big mouth. Trudy can’t seem to keep herself from insulting her little schoolmates by overstating the obvious. She’s brutally honest about pointing out the faults of other people, leading to difficulties in school and notes sent home from the teacher. A mysterious stranger helps her to understand that it is our differences that make us special and unique. The film is creatively animated using marionette-like cut-paper images. Bonus clips tell how the film was made, including the inspiration and process. Narrated in both English and French, this whimsical little tale would be a delightful addition to foreign language, art, film, and language arts classes, and could be used as a discussion starter about tolerance and compassion.–Lisa Hubler, Charles F.

Big Test Success: Motivational Videos for Kids. DVD. 45 min. Page Turner Adventures. 2013. ISBN unavail. $99.
K-Gr 5–Preparing students for high-stakes testing can be a challenge. Teachers spend considerable time helping them gain the knowledge they need to succeed. However, sometimes students can know the correct answers, but they allow other things to come between them and success. This program contains 15 short videos that speak, briefly, to other issues that can affect not only testing but also life in general. A female “storyologist” in an explorer outfit and a male wannabe clown in overalls who will be taking a major clown test, serve as the hosts in this live-action production. They go inside the brain of Ben, a boy who will be taking a high-stakes test. The episodes focus on relaxing, staying in control, visualization, avoiding perfectionism, healthy eating, exercising, maintaining a positive attitude, and self-affirmation. One section deals with basic test-taking strategies such as pacing, fully filling in circles, erasing completely, and making sure you’ve answered all the questions. The videos are somewhat sequential and should be shown in order. They are designed to be part of a school-wide morning broadcast, but could also be used in individual classrooms. When opened on a computer, the DVD also contains written support material. There’s plenty of gentle humor, lots of pies in the face, and good advice for students who tense up when testing time arrives. The cogent and kid-friendly episodes could lead to short classroom discussions that reinforce key concepts. Both teachers and students will enjoy this series.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary,FederalWay,WA

PreS-K–Star of PBS Television’s Monkey Monkey Music, Meredith LeVande performs 15 of her original songs, most of which are in various rock musical styles, except for one bluegrass and one gentle pop tune. The goal of her music video, which is in a style similar to those of Laurie Berkner, is to get kids moving and learning. LeVande performs on guitar with a light, airy voice against various painted backgrounds with a group of multiethnic children dancing to her tunes. Each track includes some simple animation, and a monkey blows a horn to introduce each song. “Hello” and “Goodbye” open and close the production. “What Are the Odds?” has children counting by odd numbers. “In the Garden” looks at the colors of fruits and vegetables. “This Way, That Way” features opposites such as up/down, open/shut, etc. “Frogs Eat Butterflies” introduces food chains, and “Who’s a Knockin’?” has fun with knock knock jokes. The set of the 1950s themed “Turn Your Body Around” has a checkered floor, jukebox, poodle skirts, and miniature “Fonzies.” The rest of the songs include “Air Guitar,” “Circle,” “Bubbles,” “Shake It Loud,” “Wheels,” “Silly Animal Friends,” and “Willow Tree in the Wind.” The teacher’s guide, printed inside the DVD case, has ideas for using the songs. This fun production is sure to get young viewers moving and shaking!–Beverly Wrigglesworth,San Antonio Public Library, TX

Gr 12 Up–If only Petr Ginz had survived World War II, his contribution to literature, art, and humanity would have enriched the world. Such is the sentiment viewers are likely to feel after watching this unique biography of a Czech boy living during the Nazi occupation. Petr lived in Prague, attended a school for exceptional children, read Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, and created illustrated literary fantasies all before he was transported to Auschwitz in 1944 and murdered at age 17. Despite deepening Nazi intrusions into Jewish life, Petr managed to create optimistic diaries and novels festooned with artwork. Cleverly disguised as “written by Jules Verne, illustrated by Petr Ginz,” he self-published the allegorical tale Ka-Du, a story about a mechanical monster designed to help its evil creators conquer the world. Clearly meant to parallel Nazi activity, Petr finished his masterpiece just before being deported to the Terezin Ghetto. There, he continued writing and drawing, even creating a cryptic code to record events. His life is retold by his surviving younger sister and through creative animation based on his original art. Black-and-white footage, stills, and family photos add to this affecting story. John Califra’s musical score sets the tone for this documentary about an intellectual youth undaunted by the Holocaust. Winning awards inJerusalem,Atlanta, andToronto, this film is an entertaining and powerful testament to a persistently positive and talented young man. An excellent choice for history, art, music, and social ethics classes.–Robin Levin,U.S.HolocaustMemorialMuseum Teacher/Fellow,Ft. Washakie,WY

Our teens from Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School give high ratings to Sara Bareilles’s and the Goo Goo Dolls’s latest albums, while our game reviewer assures us that the gridiron giants in summer training camps can look forward to chillaxing with the new NCAA Football 14.

Magnetic, Goo Goo Dolls (Warner Bros)

The Goo Goo Dolls have been around for over 25 years and certainly possess the accolades to prove it. The trio made up of Johnny Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and Mike Malinin recently released their tenth studio album—Magnetic. Fans of the group will be delighted with it. At its core, it is a light, summer-type album with 11 pop-rock songs that make for great listening. There are no themes or statements here; or any political or social messages. Anyone who has enjoyed the band’s prior music will find plenty of reasons to just sit back and be impressed by the band’s ability to continue to produce great and upbeat music. The wonderful acoustics, driving groove sound and solid vocals from front man Rzeznik is exactly what one would expect from a Goo Goo Dolls album. To help them, the band enlisted the help of some of the best producers, Rob Cavallo (Green Day), John Shanks (Van Halen), Greg Wattenberg (Train), etc. All this collaboration made for an impeccably executed album with strong momentum throughout. It will be nice to see what else this band has in store for the future. Definite tracks to check out— “When the World Breaks Your Heart,” “Bullet-proof Angel,” “Rebel Beat,” “Come to Me,” and “Slow It Down.”—Stephen E., Grade 12, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School

The Blessed Unrest, Sara Bareilles (Epic)

On The Blessed Unrest, Bareilles deviates from the pop mainstream approach she has produced in the past and has taken some risks. Bareilles continues to craft great music as she boldly bounces from one music genre to another. The album’s 12 tracks contain Motown-flavored rhythms, EDM-inspired sounds, ghostly love songs, hushed and jazzy piano ballads, and of course the inspirational pop song. Not every tracks works, but Bareilles is such a strong melodic songwriter that she doesn’t risk isolating herself. Fans will have more than enough to grab onto here and many will applaud her daring to venture out of her comfort zone. Tracks to check out are “Brave,” “Little Black Dress,” “Chasing the Sun,” and “1000 Times.”—Geena G., grade 11, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School

NCAA Football 14 (EA Tiburon)

Can you believe it’s that time again? Football season is almost upon us and the next installment in college football is here with NCAA Football 14. The burning question is what’s new with this edition, and fans will be happy to know that much has been overhauled to make the experience even better.

First is the new Infinity Engine 2 which aids the mechanics by giving a realistic feeling to players’ movements on the field. This refinement called Force Impact System calculates speed, momentum, and mass allowing for subtle movements, accelerations, and nimble navigation on the field. Option Play has been emphasized with 30 new Option types including a Playbook devoted to plays. The Ultimate Team element that is very popular in other EA games makes its debut. Now gamers can build their own dream teams across the decades. The biggest changes are in the Dynasty mode that allows you to choose special coaching skills through experience points. More points lead to upgrades. There is also Power Recruiting to help across the board recruitment based on a point based system. Little was done to improve the graphics and sound, but since PS4 is just around the corner I am sure that this will be addressed with the next addition. NCAA Football 14 is great fun with lots to offer but probably won’t appeal to a hugely new fan base. Rating: E for Everyone, Platform PlayStation 3, Xbox 360.—Andrew B., grade 12, Floral Park (NY) Memorial High School

PreS-Gr 1–Keith Baker’s incredibly inventive occupation-based alphabet book (Beach Lane, 2010) has been beautifully designed and hilariously interpreted by premier animators, Soup2Nuts. You will never look at little green peas the same way again! Tiny round pea people cavort about with delightful vocals by Crystal Taliefero and backup singers, including the Oakview Elementary Choir. The peas literally animate the alphabet, illuminating different activities and jobs for each of the 26 letters, beginning with acrobats, astronauts, and artists. They humorously demonstrate actions and occupations like climbers and campers; painters, poets, and plumbers; quitters and quarterbacks. The DVD is punctuated by infectious rhythms and rhymes that young children will want to emulate again and again. Baker’s colorful letters are constantly swarming with unique pea people. Turn on the read-along subtitles so students can follow the highlighted letters and words easily. A teacher’s guide is included, as is an outstanding interview with the author/illustrator. “We are peas! The alphabet peas! Now tell us, please, who are you?” This perfect lead-in invites teachers and kids to follow the pattern with other veggies. Never has the alphabet been more entertaining.–Lonna Pierce, MacArthur & Thomas Jefferson Schools, Binghamton, NY

First Run Features. 2013. ISBN unavail. $24.95.

Winning awards in Jerusalem, Atlanta, and Toronto, this film is an entertaining and powerful testament to a persistently positive and talented young man. An excellent choice for history, art, music, and social ethics classes.–Robin Levin, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Teacher/Fellow, Ft. Washakie, WY

Gr 5-8–Black’s tale (Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2013) of friendship and the trials of growing up is set against the backdrop of a spooky ghost story. Zach Barlow loves to make things up. He and his friends Poppy and Alice spend every afternoon concocting new adventures for their dolls and action figures. However, Zach’s recently returned father is less than thrilled about his son spending his time playing with dolls instead of taking part in more age-appropriate activities, such as basketball. When he commits a drastic act to force Zach to give up his play-acting, it precipitates a series of events that send Zach, Poppy, and Alice on a midnight quest to lay to rest the soul of a murdered girl, a soul that now inhabits a bone china doll. Along the way, the trio uncovers secrets about the past and one another, and discovers that they are capable of more than they ever realized. Nick Podehl expertly voices the three friends as well as the unforgettable characters Tin-Shoe Joe and the pink-haired librarian, Miss Katherine. Black has written an adventurous ghost tale that fans of Mary Downing Hahn and Peg Kehret and devotees of the author’s previous novels will love.–Michaela Schied, formerly, Indian River Middle School, Philadelphia, NY

Gr 4-7–Sixth grader Joshua Dread’s life is far from ordinary. As the son of the super villains, the Dread Duo, Josh spends most of his time traveling from town to town. Living in Sheepdale for a while, Josh has adjusted to a fairly normal existence, when he becomes “gyfted” with the power of spontaneous combustion. When new girl Sophie shows up at school, Josh finds another “gyfted” teen, but Sophie is also the daughter of Captain Justice, his parents’ archenemy. When his parents are taken by smoke creatures, it is up to Josh, with help from Sophie and his “ungyfted” best friend, Milton, to help save the day. Bacon has developed an entertaining and clever plot and two dynamite tweens with superpowers in this novel (Delacorte, 2012). Narrator Maxwell Glick captures the comic antics of the superheroes and villains perfectly and his voices for Joshua and Sophie reflect their unique personalities. A fun read filled with comedy and daring antics. The second book in the series, Joshua Dread: The Nameless Hero, is scheduled for September 2013 publication.–Sarah Flood, Breckinridge County Public Library, Hardinsburg, KY

PreS-Gr 2–In this follow-up to their 2010 album, Rock and Roll Garden, singer-songwriter Koral and her crew of talented musicians combine pop, folk, and rock in a delightful collection of 10 child-friendly songs, which cover such topics as shoes, trains, rocket ships, and a mother’s love for her baby. Also included is a toe-tapping sing-along that will get children up as they act out the movements of several different animals, a very groovy take on the gingerbread man, and a song that beautifully describes the life cycle of a butterfly in terms that even young children can understand. While several of the numbers could be used for story times or in the classroom, all of the songs would be great for family listening. A fun must-have for every collection.–Veronica De Fazio, Plainfield Public Library District, IL

PreS-Gr 3–This ocean-themed album, set in a submarine, travels the seven seas discovering musical treasures. Drew Holloway and Jack Forman welcome drummer Korum Bishoff, a new band member, on their ninth album, a rip-roaring, high energy mix of rock, hip-hop, funk, Latin, sea shanty, folk, and pop musical styles. With outstanding vocal and instrumental performances on guitar, bass, mandolin, violin, viola, cello, trombone, trumpet, flugelhorn, Wurly, and drums, the band begins with the rousing, rhythm powered “Tambourine Submarine.” Then a drum-playing fish demonstrates every kind of music on his drum set in “Fish Sticks.” They discover a coral reef that is actually a “Choral Reef” that makes beautiful music. “Shrimp” has size issues, but realizes there are perks to being short. A “Seahorse” is the deep sea cowboy’s mount as he ropes shrimp and patrols the mangroves. The other songs include “The Deep End” (of the swimming pool), “Beach Ball,” “Compass Rose,” “Tattoo Me,” “The Seven Cs” (all the crew’s names begin with that letter), “Seagull,” “Up Periscope,” “Walkie Talkies,” “Making Waves,” and “Stranded” (when a best friend moves away). With zippy, quirky lyrics and superb musicianship, Recess Monkey continues to be a cut above other kindie bands.–Beverly Wrigglesworth, San Antonio Public Library, TX

I Like Everything About You (Yes I Do!). Performed by Crosspulse Percussion Ensemble. CD. 42 min. Crosspulse Media. 2013. ISBN unavail. $15.

Gr all levels–This outstanding first album for children and families from Crosspulse Percussion features melodies, rhythms, and instruments from around the world, with an emphasis on African music. Keith Terry, Omar Ledezma, Amber Hines, Evie Ladin, and Tacuma King make up the ensemble, and all give excellent performances on vocals (with gorgeous harmonies), instruments, and body rhythms. In a number of songs, they make creative use of body sounds: whistling, claps, steps, stomps, snaps, and clogging foot percussion. Well-known instruments include banjo, upright bass, harmonica, tin can, chopsticks, sticks, cowbell, and tambourine. The ensemble also performs on different kinds of drums: seko drums, congas, frame drum, and krin (African slit or log drums); and on such world instruments and percussion as nose flute, bolon, cajón, bamboo spoons, gongi bells, karinyan, maracas, quitiplas (bamboo stamping tubes), and claves. Many numbers are traditional folk songs from various cultures: “Yamawele” (Congo); “Little Liza Jane” from England, but with African rhythms; “Cumbe” a scarf dance from Venezuela; “Rara” (Haiti); “CooCoo” (Appalachia); and “Krin” (Ghana). Keith Terry contributes three pieces: “Jalan-Jalan,” “I Like Everything About You,” and “Body Beat” which moves from African American hambone through modern body music, Duke Ellington’s “Caravan,” a Spanish rap, and ends with intricate rhythms. The funky “Walkin’ the Dog,” “Breaths” (a Sweet Honey in the Rock song), and “Flores” by Pedro Izquierdo of Havana round out the playlist. This unique album is a great introduction to world music and rhythm for children and a listening feast for the whole family.–Beverly Wrigglesworth, San Antonio Public Library, TX

K-Gr 2–The London Symphony Orchestra, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Moscow, the Toronto Chamber Orchestra, and several other professional music groups give instrumental voice to a wide variety of birds. These wonderful performances feature whole orchestras or single instruments, such as voices, flute, violin, organ, piano, and harpsichord. Excerpts from 20 classical pieces include “Spring” from Four Seasons (Vivaldi); Le Chant des Oiseaux (Janequin); “Melancholy” from Cantus Arcticus (Rautavaara); “The Bird” from Peter and the Wolf (Prokofiev); “Hens and Roosters,” “Aviary,” and “The Swan,” from The Carnival of the Animals (Saint-Saëns); “Dance of the Little Swans” from Swan Lake (Tchaikovsky); “Song of the Lark” from Album for the Young (Tchaikovsky); “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks” from Pictures at an Exhibition (Mussorgsky); “The Cuckoo and the Nightingale” from Concerto for Organ and Orchestra (Handel); “The Robin” from Small Sketches of Birds (Messiaen); “Papageno and Papagena” from The Magic Flute (Mozart); “Dance of the Firebird” from Firebird (Stravinsky); and more. The accompanying, illustrated book includes notes about the birds, the musical excerpts, and the composers; a glossary of musical terms; and a time line of the composers and their periods. A truly enriching experience.–Beverly Wrigglesworth, San Antonio Public Library, TX
