Gr 7 Up–Worried about transferring to a new school, Sadie comes up with the idea of faking a peanut allergy. She thinks that pretending to have a life-threatening condition will draw attention to her and generate sympathy. Her predictions come true, and she makes several new friends and even attracts a boyfriend. But as time passes, Sadie finds it harder and harder to keep up with her lies, and her story begins to unravel. The girl who became best known for having a peanut allergy is heading toward a future in which she will become best known for being a liar, and she will have to deal with the backlash from people who knew her under false pretenses. Sadie is an empathetic character, and readers will relate to her nervousness about fitting in, her emotional tug-of-war with her mother, and the ups and downs of her friendships. Hoppe’s cartoon illustrations are primarily in grayscale but he also uses one color (red) to highlight Sadie’s character or objects like a flower from her boyfriend. Librarians, teachers, and parents should definitely share this book with teens looking for realistic graphic novels about schools, friendship, peer pressure, or moral choices.–Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library

Gr 5-8–Lina and Doon have spent their entire lives surrounded by darkness. Lina is an optimist and a dreamer who just knows there is something beyond the city of her birth. Doon is much more practical. He knows that if he can just get a good look underground, he can fix the city’s constant blackout problem. A chance encounter on Assignment Day allows the two children to meet and exchange jobs, essentially giving the other what they’ve always wanted. They start to unearth an evil plot by the city’s obese and greedy mayor to steal away precious resources from the people who live there. Using clues left behind by Lina’s late grandmother, they travel beneath Ember’s tunnels in a desperate attempt to find a way out. Based on DuPrau’s novel (Random, 2003), the story brings the city of Ember to life using many muted yellows and earth tones. While the interior vantage points from Lina’s and Doon’s perspectives make Ember’s public buildings and homes seem large, advanced exterior shots surrounded entirely in black give readers a sense of just how isolated Ember is. Lina’s wonder and Doon’s frustration are easily visible through Asker’s skill in detailing facial expressions, helping to visually elevate a story literally besieged by shadows. Dystopian stories can be dark, and this one is literally so, but its ultimately hopeful message will resonate.–Ryan P. Donovan, New York Public Library

When Mirka, an 11-year-old Orthodox Jew, goes to retrieve her sword from the troll, he inadvertently summons a meteorite. Fortunately, she is able to prevent the destruction of Hereville with the help of the witch. Unfortunately, the witch turns the meteorite into a clone of Mirka. It isn’t long before “Metty” begins to make our heroine’s life difficult. When Mirka asks the duplicate to leave, Metty proposes three challenges to decide who will stay in Hereville, and who will be banished. Deutsch seamlessly weaves elements of Orthodox Judaism in with themes of individuality and self-worth. The color illustrations are as crisp and clear as they come. The endlessly creative panel and perspective work adds visual interest and gives experienced graphic-novel readers plenty to savor. A well-crafted addition to a truly distinctive series.–Travis Jonker, Wayland Union Schools, MI

Gr 5-8–Callie has ambitious plans for her school’s production of Moon Over Mississippi. She has more to contend with than the logistics of building a working stage cannon, though, including the tension between stage crew and actors and her confusion about her new friend, Jesse. Does he like her, or is he gay like his twin brother? Telgemeier deftly portrays the ambiguity of sexual identity in the middle-school years in a story that simultaneously appeals to that audience. Callie is a strong character, confident in her ability as an artist and warm and friendly to her peers. She and her fellow students grin frequently, to the point of seeming unrealistically well adjusted. More often, however, Telgemeier is just showing the best side of teens. “Keep it professional,” the stage crew head tells the group, and they do. The full-color cartoon-style illustrations are graceful, assured, and, along with the twists and turns of the plot, guarantee an entertaining and enlightening read.–Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

Gr 8 Up—The Limit has the look of traditional shoujo manga, but the story is closer to Lord of the Flies: A busload of high school children goes over a cliff, killing most of them and upending the social order. It’s a dark book with quite a bit of violence, but it’s also an unsparing look at bullying and cliques. Suenobu is the author of Life, a manga that dealt with cutting and was published by Tokyopop.

Tokyopop released this as a five-volume series in the mid-2000s; Vertical’s three-volume edition has a larger format and a new translation. Sexual situations and innuendo make this a better choice for older teens.

Gr 5 Up–Zeina and her younger brother are growing up in Beirut, where civil war is a part of daily life. To protect against strikes and sniper fire, the family’s living space has been reduced to the relative security of their apartment foyer, where a rug hanging on the wall, depicting Moses and the Hebrews fleeing Egypt, figures predominantly as a story background. This account chronicles one day in their lives, as the siblings await their parents’ return and neighbors come and spend time with them, building an island of sanctuary for the children during this time of uncertainty. Bold, graphic, black-and-white images are visually and emotionally striking. Excellent use of maps and diagrams provides reference points and enhances understanding of spatial relationships. Unique panel placement includes several sequences of horizontal strips, read as columns. Images portray elapsed time, such as repeated smoking and countdown panels, and control pacing while revealing mounting tension. Excruciating wait time is depicted with cumulative “tic” and “toc” filling successive panels. Circular images of an embracing family contrast with the stark linear images of a war-torn country. Warmth and humor of daily life is shown in baking and storytelling, and wedding-dress close-ups touchingly highlight a mother’s worry over soiling the hem, masking her worry over sniper fire. This superb memoir is destined to become a classic.–Babara M. Moon, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, NY

Gr 3-6–Hatke has again conjured up a rich and satisfying story with enchanting characters and delightful humor. Lumponians are seeking Zita’s help to save their planet from the dangerous invasion of star hearts that will strip a planet to its bedrock. Convinced that she is their only hope, they offer as payment the remaining jump crystal that will allow her to return home. They happen upon a robot masquerading as Zita and employ this counterfeit hero to save them. While Zita does save the Lumponians and her rivalry with robot Zita is nicely resolved, the story is obviously a setup for further adventures as she must rescue her companion mouse. Hatke’s humor is in top form, including the creation of dialects with unique spellings and language that perfectly capture the each character’s personality. Even robots have a language. Wordplay is omnipresent, such as names based on musical terms, and the star-hearts invasion being described as a “heart attack.” Inventive sound effects such as “scootch” and “snuffle” and the gift of a “slap in a box” are among the many bon mots youngsters will savor. The characters’ expressive faces are given a charm and attention to detail that will captivate readers of all ages, and the beautifully illuminated images of space inspire awe. Legends offers a parody of celebrity status and gently explores the question of notoriety versus heroism. Gr 4 Up–Based on her childhood experiences, Na Liu and her husband have created a rich, multilayered memoir, incorporating history, geography, language, culture, and mythology into eight short stories; then weaving them together to create an exquisite tapestry of life in China during the 1970s. The work follows a logical progression, capturing youthful experiences against a broad Chinese landscape. Background information establishes each story and seamlessly segues into personal reminiscence, with excellent interweaving of each section. For example, the introductory dream sequence features Na Liu and her sister flying on a crane’s back over panoramic China. The first narrative panel depicts the girls’ awakening, with a painting of a white crane visible behind their bed. Mythological origins of New Year transition into an account of the family’s celebration, with red banners and a dragon puppet echoing the colors and patterns from the previous holiday description. Scenes of daily life are juxtapostioned against the political climate, retelling simple stories through comic panels that can be enjoyed by young readers, but also delivering interesting perspectives and biting commentary on social issues. The grim realities of government propaganda, social class, and family dynamics make the memoir even more poignant. Humor, as well as the plays on words, enlivens many of the sections. The children’s expressive faces provide a personal reaction to these contrasting points of view. This picturesque treasure introduces Chinese culture through a personal perspective that is both delightful and thought-provoking.–Babara M. Gr 4-6–Cam’s unemployed father can only afford a cardboard box for his son’s birthday present. However, this cardboard is special: it animates itself. A cardboard boxer becomes a man called Bill, a magic cardboard machine actually spits out new pieces of magic cardboard, and a figure of Cam’s dead mother chastises his father for not moving on. This cardboard powerfully projects the thoughts and desires of its users and becomes dangerous when Cam’s wealthy, spoiled neighbor, Marcus, uses it to create an army of monsters. Rich colors printed on glossy pages, along with dramatic cuts between panels, give the comic a cinematic feel, and the illustrations’ sharp angles and sinewy lines are striking. This action-filled adventure is not only highly entertaining, but also contains provocative points about the power of imagination. The ending, in which a reformed Marcus has shed his goth stylings and Cam’s father has found a job and a girlfriend, is a little too tidy, but this is a thoughtful and gripping read.–Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

Movie Novelization

Greg Cox’s The Dark Knight Rises (Titan, 2012; Gr 9 Up) provides a gripping recounting of the movie’s plot. The story unfolds on a scale both epic and intimate, as the citizens of Gotham are threatened by a ruthless terrorist named Bane and his army of followers, and Bruce Wayne struggles for balance between his own existence and that of his alter ego. Written with a sense of gritty realism, the accessible narrative has a pared-down quality that keeps the pages turning quickly. Action scenes, large-scale skirmishes, and fist-to-fist confrontations are described with suspenseful rat-a-tat pacing, while dialogue exchanges and moments of introspection reveal the characters’ back stories and personal motivations.

Though violence is an integral part of the telling (and there is some strong language), it is not gratuitous, and malicious schemes are countered by the actions of altruistic individuals and the emergence of unexpected heroes. The point of view shifts among the players, providing readers with a broad IMAX-style perspective as the various story lines develop and intersect; plot twists are foreshadowed but kept tightly shrouded until the appropriate time, building toward a thrilling conclusion. Teens will be drawn in by the movie-poster cover—the enigmatic Caped Crusader silhouetted against the fiery profile of a bat emblazoned in the Gotham sky—and satisfied by the book’s explosive action and solid storytelling.

Tools of the Trade

The Dark Knight Manual (Insight Editions, 2012; Gr 6 Up) reveals the inner workings of Batman’s clandestine world with full-color photos from the film trilogy, plentiful illustrations and diagrams, and a vault-load of “classified” documents. Purportedly compiled by Bruce Wayne, this scrapbook-style volume fittingly opens with the police case file on his parents’ murder, followed by a Gotham Post front page featuring a “Chaos Sweeps Gotham” headline and photo of a triumphant Bane. In subsequent sections, Batman describes his training in various fighting techniques (under the tutelage of the nefarious Rā’s al Ghul), the secrets of his subterranean base (including detailed blueprints and a removable map), his suit (illustrated with design sketches and a flip-through progression of its multiple layers), weaponry (there’s even an inset manual for his trademark grappling gun), and state-of-the-art vehicles (plans, diagrams, schematics, and cock-pit views).

The book ends with dossiers about Harvey Dent, the Scarecrow, and the Joker, and brief bios of other villains and allies. Hand-written Post-it notes are scattered throughout, and a large fold-out map of Gotham City completes the package. Movie plot elements, character relationships, and plenty of Batman background are woven into the first-person text, and the “official” materials are carefully detailed and believably designed. Though keeping track of the removable items might be a challenge for libraries, this is great browser for movie fans.

A Look Behind the Scenes

Jody Duncan Jesser and Janine Pourroy provide an opulently illustrated and insightfully written overview of The Art and Making of the Dark Knight Trilogy (Abrams, 2012; Gr 8 Up). This handsome oversize volume details the creative process for all three movies-Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012)-focusing on the challenges unique to each film, making contrasts and comparisons, and tracing the evolution of both the story and the behind-the-camera artistry. A prologue sets the scene, delineating the inspirations for a film franchise envisioned to be “more classical drama than super hero fluff” and a Batman who is not “a one-dimensional comic book hero in black tights, cape, and bat ears, but rather a complex, multidimensional human being, a real man struggling to overcome life’s tragedies and his own inner demons.”

Filled with commentary from movie creators, the well-organized chapters provide an insider’s view of the complete creative process from screenplay, casting, and production design to on-set filming and the final touches of post-production. Readers get the skinny on all manner of movie marvels, including the creation of the villainous Two-Face’s half-burned visage, the shooting of an action sequence showing an 18-wheeler truck flipping over (end to end) on a city street, and the filming of the final movie’s football stadium sequence on location at Heinz Field with nearly 12,000 extras and the Pittsburgh Steelers. They also get a clear idea of Christopher Nolan’s vision for the trilogy (every element, from the smallest detail of costume to major plot points, was required to fit into the realistic world that he has conceptualized), his hands-on style of directing, and his determination to push beyond the traditional limits of filmmaking.

The spectacular large-size photos include dramatic movie stills, on-set images of cast and crew, close-ups of costumes and props, and more. Concept artwork, storyboards, costume designs, set plans, and reproductions of referenced comic book illustrations also adorn the pages. Whether thumbed through or consumed cover to cover, this volume is a must-read for Dark Knight devotees and also deserves a place in collections focused on the history of film and filmmaking.

Batman’s Wheels

Mark Cotta Vaz shines the spotlight on one of the Caped Crusader’s most defining aspects, the Batmobile (Insight Editions, 2012; Gr 8 Up). From its first appearance as a cherry-red sedan in the 1940s comics, through its numerous incarnations on comic-book pages and in media formats (TV and movies), to the tough-looking Tumbler of Nolan’s film trilogy, the evolution of Batman’s crime-fighting vehicle is clearly recounted, revealing how the “Batmobile has changed with the times and reflects the times, like the Dark Knight himself.” The well-written text places this icon in the broader context of the Batman universe and in popular culture, while also zooming in on the specifics of the design concepts and challenges behind creating particular incarnations, such as the familiar convertible with the double-bubble windshield from the 1960s TV show, or the elegantly streamlined yet menacing-looking machine for Tim Burton’s Batman. Commentary from comics creators, movie directors and producers, and even stuntman drivers add interest and behind-the-wheel insights. Abundant and stunning, illustrations include reproductions from comic books, film photos, blue prints, concept artwork, and even a fold-out image of the Tumbler. A fascinating read.

Gr 7 Up–This book has the look and feel of a true manga title, complete with two battling men and a flustered female who wishes she were stronger. Lydia is wide-eyed and innocent, described as having hair the color of “rust,” while Huxley and Edgar are smoldering, with long bangs and serious eyes. Edgar is most likely the good guy, but that could change throughout the plot. Huxley is a thief, with a band of brothers on the prowl, who abduct Lydia, a fairy doctor who may know how to find the famous Star Sapphire. Edgar, claiming to be the descendant of the Blue Knight, a fairy ruler and friend of the king, swoops in to rescue her. However, he also wants the Star Sapphire to prove his claim to the Earldom his father left. Lydia and her talking cat (a fairy in feline form) are stumped by the good guy/bad guy scenario as well. The story has hints of romance, plenty of fantasy, a bit of violence, and just enough Pride and Prejudice-style manners to interest female readers. As the book ends with a cliff-hanger, libraries need to commit to buying the whole series.–Sarah Knutson, American Canyon Middle School, CA

Gr 6 Up–Dark Graphic Tales includes “The Gold Bug,” “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Poe is a master of the grotesque, a purveyor of insanity, and elements of his work are well suited for visual depiction. Serratosa’s emotive, eerily colored line drawings, cryptography, bugs, buried treasure, pirates, insane asylums, and crypts make for a creepy crawly delight. Chilling Tales contains Guy de Maupassant’s “The Hand,” Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s “Sir Dominick’s Bargain,” Edward Lucas White’s “The House of Nightmare,” John William Polidori’s “The Vampire,” Catherine Crowe’s “House B… on Camden Hill,” Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Body Snatcher,” and Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat.” Rodríguez precedes each story with a brief biography of the writer, which is beneficial to horror fans who otherwise might not have encountered these 18th – and 19th- century authors. One possible drawback to this work is Rodríguez’s cartoon portrayals, which can defuse highly emotional moments and distract readers from otherwise good horror fiction. Most exceptional is his treatment of “The House of Nightmare.” His rendering of the ghost boy will haunt readers long after the final scene. Horror and sci-fi fans alike will enjoy Sierra’s interpretation of Frankenstein. This adaptation holds true to Mary Shelley’s classic story and, with it, her desire to “speak to the mysterious fears of our nature.” Readers witness young Frankenstein’s perilous desire to make “miracles realities” and his efforts to unlock the secrets of death. Ribas’s black-and-white illustrations work well to drive the story and create an overwhelming sense of alienation and loss.–Lisa Gieskes, Richland County Public Library, Columbia, SC

Gr 3-6–Each book includes a two-page introduction to the creature to root its appearance in history and mythology, as well as a graphic-novel-style story about it and a page about related stories from other countries or mythological traditions. While this spare approach forces much information to be left out of individual titles, the books as a whole include a wide range of stories, from Greek myth to Russian fairy tales to medieval legends, so readers of all three volumes will get a feel for the wide range of the myths, something readers of individual titles only might miss. The stories chosen include “Hercules and the Centaur”; “Prince Ivan, the Firebird, and the Wolf”; and “Therese and the Unicorn” and are action packed and character driven, matched with artwork reminiscent of superhero comics. Characters, rather than creatures, are the prime focus of the stories in most cases, in terms of plot and imagery. Hercules, Ivan, and Therese are frequently depicted as the main image in each panel, supported by detailed scenery and accurate figure drawing. Gr 5-9–These first two installments in this series introduce a scrappy mother/daughter duo who deal with life’s problems with sarcastic humor, resiliency, and their own brand of love. Lou is a precocious 12-year-old growing up with a single mother who, with an addiction to video games and her dinner-burning antics, sometimes acts more like a child than her daughter does. (The story of Lou’s missing father is explained in the second book and becomes a point of suspense for future titles.) The happily unconventional family dynamic works for them, and Lou navigates through first crushes, helping her mom get a date with their cute new neighbor, and dealing with her grumpy grandmother on vacation, all with the help of her best friend and a comfortingly lazy cat. The plot moves in scenes that are broken down, but not differentiated; each spread has its own mini-story, but they are all connected and in a general sequence. There are some mature themes, such as alcohol use by the mother, but they are dealt with in a realistic manner that fits in the context. The art is cartoony and cheerful, but also illustrates emotion as necessary. Readers, especially girls, will enjoy these strong, funny characters and the true-to-life dilemmas that they face and overcome.–Rita Meade, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

There is also a stumbling, bumbling boy named Charley who is interested in her. Jinx faces the challenges of high school–what to wear, where to sit for lunch, and how to handle divorced parents. The story is sweet and simple, a good choice for middle school girls looking ahead to the high school transition. The graphics are bright and colorful, much like the original “Archie” series, but with modernized clothes and a more diverse cast. Part of a long-standing series, Jinx will likely continue for a while, but this title is much more of a comic book than a graphic novel, and librarians should consider whether it is a good fit for their collections.–Sarah Knutson, American Canyon Middle School, CA

Painted with the darkest ink known, the work of art attacks its viewers with the vicious ghosts of their ancestors. This melodramatic horror story should be popular with manga fans, especially with those who are also manga artists. While more detailed and realistic than most manga, the artwork has a stiff, amateurish quality that may actually endear it to beginning artists. The black-and-white drawings are bathed in pastel shades of pink, blue, and lavender, adding to the otherworldly tone of the story. Gr 6 Up–Maria, a young mother, falls asleep while smoking and dreams about a public-service announcement about a fire and the dangers of cigarettes. The dream sequence has some inventive ways to reinforce the fact that smoking is bad, with metaphoric representations of its monetary, hygienic, and health costs, and the pervasive cultural pressure to light up is fairly well illustrated. It’s all considerably over-the-top, including absurdly unrealistic dialogue chock-full of statistics unlikely to change any minds. Brown has made a career out of detailed and realistic diagrams of superhero props and weapons; his character work here is much less sure-handed, especially in the more fanciful visuals. However, any success he may have had is significantly undercut by the computer coloring, which is garish and artificial and removes any possibility of aesthetic appeal. The volume closes with eight pages of facts, quizzes, and related URLs. Well-meaning, factually sound, oddly fanciful, and utterly fruitless, this book will likely reach no one.–Benjamin Russell, Belmont High School, NH

They gather in groups and whisper things about her while she is walking by, making it clear that they already don’t like her. Yusuke and Shin, however, are intrigued by the mystery that is Maria. Did she really beat up a teacher? Where does that amazing voice come from and why is she singing “Amazing Grace?” The art is crafted in a way that shows that Maria stands out not only in talent, but also in looks, creating yet another reason for the girls to be jealous of her. While her reputation makes her sound spiteful and capable of cruel things, she is illustrated as sweet and innocent. The story ends leaving readers wanting to know the truth about her; they are sure to ask for future volumes in the series.–Jessica Lorentz Smith, Bend Senior High School, OR

Gr 9 Up–As a young boy, Eucles wins a foot race and is granted Athenian citizenship, but because he did this at the cost of the pride of King Hippias, his parents are executed. Years later, the king, now exiled, is using the might of the Persian army to try and conquer Athens. Eucles must swallow his desire for personal vengeance and race to deliver communications between Athens, Sparta, and the battlefield of Marathon. Historical accounts of the run between Sparta and Marathon vary significantly, and Yakin has been free with interpretation. He establishes motivation for Eucles, making him singularly inspirational and instrumental in not just delivery of information, but in turning the tide of the Battle of Marathon itself. This has the effect of making the events very personal, and therefore imbued with dramatic tension. Also, it helps provide a lens to focus the action, which is necessary as the cast is sprawling and the narrative is nonlinear. The characters are given nicely varied names, helping somewhat with sorely needed identification, as armor and intensity help make a morass of who is whom. The artwork is drawn in a sketchy, energetic style, a kinetic messiness that helps underscore the blood, dirt, and movement. Spot color gives the main action a parchment glow, and a cool gray helps indicate flashbacks. Interestingly complex for a story about a series of runs, and aesthetically compelling, this story will grip readers, who will fight through its occasional muddles along with its protagonist.– Benjamin Russell, Belmont High School, NH

Before they completely forget what it’s like to read for fun, get a graphic novel in their hands. These titles range from strangely humorous to uncomfortably serious, and there’s a reader out there for every one of them, guaranteed.

ISBN 9780547252698. JLG Level: GH: Graphic Novels High (Grades 9 & up)

Inzana artfully blends reality and myth in this intriguing story of a teen searching for his identity, both as a young man and a Japanese American. Absorbed in the memory of his long-dead soldier father, Ichiro lacks interest in his heritage until he moves to Toyko to live with his grandfather. He is soon immersed in the legends and spirit world of Japanese culture, and must focus on all he’s learned to find his way back home. A visual stunner.

This absolutely hysterical book features a teen boy who has the ability to transform into a boat—actually, a small yacht. Though this ability comes in handy, sometimes the change is unexpected and leaves Teen Boat high and dry. Best reason to read it? This compelling pitch from illustrator John Green at the recent Toronto Comics Art Festival!

Baby’s in Black tells the tale of romance between Stuart Sutcliffe, the “fifth Beatle” and Astrid Kirchherr, a German photographer and friend of the band. Using charcoals and an understated presentation of the situation, Bellstorf focuses on the love and mutual respect Sutcliff and Kirchherr had for each other with the backdrop of the groundbreaking historical events that led to the formation of one of the most influential rock and roll bands ever. Not just for Beatle fans.

Razorbill, 2012. ISBN 9781595144355. JLG Level: GH: Graphic Novels High (grades 9 & up)

This visually stunning and well-told story depicts a different kind of graphic novel. Told completely with newspaper clippings, photographs, artwork, and screen shots of IM conversations, readers learn about Glory Fleming’s rise in the music world, a romance with her new next-door neighbor, and her obsession with the song “Chopsticks. Though the story is expanded online, the print version is completely self-contained. A complicated but rewarding “read.”

This fictionalized biography is based on his memoir, published in 1907. Exciting episodes include bucking broncos, runaway horses, and Apache raids, as well as Love’s capture by hostile Native Americans, the drunken theft of a cannon from a U.S. Army fort, and the cowboy competition that gives the authors the right to call Love “The Best Shot in the West.” DuBurke’s muscular art features flying bullets, billowing dust, and driving rain. Panels tend to be large, the better to depict the wide open spaces of the Great Plains and the cattle, horses, and buffalo that Love lived and worked among. Gr 3-6–A blacksmith’s daughter is unsatisfied with her peaceful life within the fortress of Mont Petit Pierre. Rambunctious and loudmouthed, Claudette yearns for action, like killing the giant that lives on the mountain outside of town. With her timid brother, Gaston, and her ladylike friend, Marie, she blusters her way through the fortress gate and into the Forest of Death, beyond which lies the Mad River, and then Giant’s Peak. Can these three kids, armed with a wooden sword, Marie’s intelligence, Gaston’s fortitude, Claudette’s stinky feet, and a pug named Valiant, survive in the wilderness and defeat the giant? Of course they can, but not in the ways they might have expected. The adults in the story are distinguished by exaggerated characteristics, but their actions are driven by realistic, largely generous motives. The story strikes a fine balance between being action-and friendship-driven. The art is similarly well-balanced: Rosado’s ink drawings are strong and lively, with expressive characters and well-drawn landscapes. Digitally applied color is natural, bright, and nonintrusive.
