Chip Kidd Issues Book Cover Design Challenge

GotheBook Chip Kidd Issues Book Cover Design ChallengeAward-winning graphic designer, artist, editor, and author Chip Kidd, whose innovative book, Go: A Kidd’s Guide to Graphic Design (Workman, 2013), has received tons of stellar reviews and press coverage, is taking it to the next level. Through a new website, GoTheBook.com, he is issuing kids a challenge: redesign the cover of their favorite book.

The open-ended campaign “is more of an inspiration than a contest,” Chloe Puton, publicist for Workman, tells School Library Journal. Submissions will be shared on the site and Kidd is committed to viewing them, she notes. Though there are no plans for prizes, Kidd (and Workman) are hoping to engage students at the local level, Puton says.

“What we’re really looking for is that local schools, libraries, and bookstores pick up the idea for their own—and use it for programming with their local teen reading groups or art programs. We’re happy to work with them to help set up their program and would feature them on the site,” Puton says.

In SLJ‘s starred review (October, 2103) of Go, librarian Carol Goldman, Queens Library, NY, writes, “Kidd informs readers that virtually everything is a product of a designer’s imagination, and that graphic design, or ‘visual communication,’ has been around for hundreds of years in one form or another. He includes some splendid historical examples as proof. Peppered throughout are numerous samples of the author’s own and other talented artists’ fascinating and quirky work. Kidd’s folksy, conversational tone, in which he speaks directly to readers, is appealing. Readers will also appreciate the respect he shows for their individuality and inherent talent. Most welcome will be the 10 thought-provoking, fun projects that allow students the opportunity to use the lessons learned herein to communicate effectively through typography, color, visual imagery, and so on.”

We did this as an art contest at my library about two months ago. The local middle school’s art classes participated as well. We ended up with some really interesting designs and some great art.
