Don Brown’s America Under Attack, published on the 10-year anniversary of September 11.

The link below is a PDF of SLJ‘s original news coverage about the fateful day that the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked by terrorists, pulled from our archives. On that day, librarians in the New York City and Washington, DC, areas rose to the challenge of serving their students and patrons amidst the chaos and confusion of the tragic event.

Andrea Glick’s “Responding to Terror: School Librarians in NYC and DC Cope with Frightened Students,” appeared in SLJ‘s October 2001 print issue and online the previous month.

SLJ and LJ did not go completely unscathed. Many staff members watched from our offices on 17th Street in downtown NYC as the the Twin Towers fell. Touch and Go editor and school librarian Daryl Grabarek’s school is located two blocks from the World Trade Center. In the days following September 11, the children of SLJ staff living in the city continued to be affected as their schools—some in close proximity to Ground Zero—dealt with the aftermath of the attacks.
