Come on SLJ!! What is this? Every good librarian knows that libraries, especially, school libraries need to be weeded! I'm hoping that the new Highland Park librarian (which I am SURE the school committee will find the money to hire...) will replace some of the weeded books with updated, thoughtful and insightful materials about black history as well as assessing other areas of the collection that need to be updated. In the meantime, I would think that SLJ would be able to have some balanced commentary regarding this issue.

Weatherspoon is right about at least one thing--almost none of the books in the original collection SHOULD still be in a current HIGH SCHOOL collection. High school libraries are not, and should not be expected to be, book museums. This is 2013. A book purchased in 1973 would be at least 40 years old. I would not want my high schoolers to be using books more than 40 years old!! Even classic books need to be replaced with updated copies!
