I love the idea of the mud pie kitchen! Letting kids play with mud, sand, water, and other messy things is great for sensory play and learning. However, I have noticed that some parents are reluctant to let their kids get messy. I always thought they were being too rigid until my boss pointed out something. Many kids, particularly in urban Brooklyn, don't have washer and dryers at home. Getting kids clothes cleaned is expensive and time consuming. We try to find ways for kids to make a mess without getting messy themselves. That being said, I am going to let my son make mud pies this summer while on vacation!

Emily, we recruited our experts by reaching out to early childhood organizations and contacts in the community. We offered them a small honorarium, which helped us recruit quality people.

AMAZING IDEAS!!!! I love the playdate for families! What fun and excitement! Another neat idea---one we even used for my daughter's 3rd birthday party....set up a mud pie kitchen....any types of leftover kitchen bowls, pots, pans, wisks, spatulas, muffin tins, etc. a wheelbarrow of mud and a water hose (or other source of water, such as orange juice or milk jugs full of water). The kids will play FOREVER! It is messy--so definitely an outdoor activity--but what a day for kids!

What an awesome program! Thanks so much for sharing. We're going to try our best to emulate your program here in Camden County NJ.

How did you recruit your experts?

Thanks for the great comments! Yes, we have been having fun in Brooklyn. Some folks have been asking for our materials and the tip sheets we have created. We will be adding some of the activities to our website as we can, but feel free to contact me if you would more information at r.payne@brooklynpubliclibrary.org

The "Big Brooklyn Playdate"!! What a terrific idea! Thank you for writing about all the good things going on in Brooklyn, Rachel. This is just the kind of article I most appreciate....full of practical, simple ideas that can be replicated tomorrow. Bravo for showing both librarians and parents how easy it can be.

We have developed a very small "literacy" play space within our very small Youth area. I am constantly amazed that the older children play, talk, create & imagine with the items too. I love the idea of using "house hold" items to demonstrate what parents/adults can do at home with their children.
