I had the wonderful privilege of meeting Katherine Applegate at a book store in Berkeley, California last week. She said a few words with regard to the book IVAN and was so friendly and self-effacing that she hardly seems to realize the important contribution to childrens' literature she has made! The One and Only Ivan is the most well written book, telling a complicated story of a wild animal kept in captivity. It is beautifully told and the reader will develop great empathy for all of the characters. Ivan was a gorilla who spent his 50 years on the planet teaching humans that we're not so different from our animal brothers and sisters.
