Photos of his elegant vessels, many on a large scale, are widely used as illustrations in ceramic textbooks. They indicate a potter of unusual strength, skill, and intelligence. But I did not know what Dave's life and world were like. The first extensive attempt at making such a reconstruction was Leonard Todd's 2008 book, "Carolina Clay. The Life and Legend of the Slave Potter Dave." Now, we have Andrea Cheng's new book, "Etched in Clay." I look foreword to reading it!
