KLASSEN, Jon. This Is Not My Hat. illus. by author. 40p. Candlewick. Oct. 2012. RTE $15.99. ISBN 978-0-7636-5599-0.
PreS-Gr 1–With this new creation, Klassen repeats the theme from I Want My Hat Back (Candlewick, 2011), but with a twist. The narrator here is the thief–a small, self-confident fish who has pilfered a little blue bowler from a big sleeping fish. He wastes no time or words in confessing his crime as he swims across the page announcing, “This hat is not mine. I just stole it.” He continues his narrative with no regrets, but with a bit of rationalizing (“It was too small for him anyway.”) as he swims to his hiding place, unaware that the big fish is in quiet pursuit. Readers, of course, are in on this little secret. When the two disappear into a spread filled with seaweed, the narration goes silent, and youngsters can easily surmise what happens as the big fish reemerges with the tiny blue bowler atop his head. Simplicity is key in both text and illustrations. The black underwater provides the perfect background for the mostly gray-toned fish and seaweed while the monochromatic palette strips the artwork down to essential, yet exquisite design. Movement is indicated with a trail of small white bubbles. This not-to-be-missed title will delight children again and again.–Carolyn Janssen, Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County, Cincinnati, OH
LAROCHELLE , David. It’s a Tiger! illus. by Jeremy Tankard. 36p. CIP. Chronicle. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-8118-6925-6. LC 2011045940.
PreS-K–Young imaginations will run wild with this story within a story of a young boy who escapes from a tiger over and over again in various outrageous land- and seascapes. Tankard’s bold black lines, created with ink and digital media, frame the cartoonlike characters and allow the tiger’s stripes to stand out strikingly when viewed from a storytime circle. Children will enjoy trying to spot the tiger’s tail, which is often camouflaged within the background scenery, while the protagonist regularly shouts, “A TIGER!” displayed in large-type font. Teachers can use this book to lead their listening audiences in re-creating the boy’s actions as he sometimes creeps and crawls, yet at other times he boldly races to the surprising conclusion. This tale will be a boon to creative minds everywhere and a participatory storytime winner.–Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA
MARSALIS , Wynton. Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp! illus. by Paul Rogers. 40p. Candlewick. Oct. 2012. Tr $15.99. ISBN 978-0-7636-3991-4.
PreS-Gr 1–Who better to lead children in a celebration of sound than jazz virtuoso Wynton Marsalis? From the “tluck…tlock” of a dripping faucet and the “Chrrick chrrrick” of toast being buttered to the noises of trucks, drums, and washboards, the musician gives voice to the sounds enveloping an African American boy throughout the day. The setting, established by the wrought iron balconies on the title page and furthered in contextual clues, is the birthplace of jazz (and Marsalis)–New Orleans. The retro style of the instruments on the endpapers will immediately connect readers familiar with Langston Hughes’s First Book of Jazz (Watts, 1955) to Cliff Roberts’s jaunty and decorative designs in that landmark introduction, adding another layer of appreciation. Rogers’s lively ink and digital illustrations, with strong black lines; a controlled palette; visual quotes from Roberts; and intent, closed-eyed musicians, echo and continue the rhythmic exploration. The font conveying the sounds sashays and slithers around the images; printed in orange, it varies in size and weight to indicate volume. In one dynamic spread, four “Pizzicato violinists plick-pluck licks,” with the one farthest away playing the softest (smallest) “tlick!” Floating against a white background, pictures and text read well from a distance; they practically call out for sharing with a group of eager noisemakers. The penultimate image is the boy with a horn, bringing to mind another famous New Orleans native. This exuberant articulation of sounds both subtle and grandiose is sure to inspire closer listening and creative responses.–Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library
PINKWATER , Daniel. Bear in Love. illus. by Will Hillenbrand. 40p. Candlewick. 2012.RTE $15.99. ISBN 978-0
Gr 1-6–This tale of fear grown wild will ignite the imaginations of many children. Like a thriller, it starts with a threat: a big black dog is outside. As each family member awakens and notices it, it grows as big as a Jeffy. (Look for clues of that beast in drawings strewn about the house.) Structured with outstandingly toned tempera paintings on one side, each family member color-coded and carefully wrought sepia vignettes interspersed with text reminiscent of the work of Shaun Tan on the other, the action advances quickly into a chase. Small, the youngest of the artistic family living in a vertical-gabled red house in an eerily green snow-covered forest, sees the dog for what it is–she calls the MacGuffin a guffin–but agrees he is BIG. She could fit in one of its nostrils! Small makes him catch her if he can. She taunts him down a size and makes him squeeze into a slide, under a footbridge. The visuals go cinemascope during the chase, but resume their structure when they enter the cat flap. An ode to scale, to the portholes and bay windows of Victorian architecture, the poetry of family chatter, and steampunk elegance of antique hot-water heaters, all are here for young eyes to luxuriate in and imagine that they are courageous Small with their family’s love shining down like rainbows. Fear, fun, and just dripping with beauty, this title will pair perfectly with Neil Gaiman’s The Wolves in the Walls (HarperCollins, 2003).–Sara Lissa Paulson, American Sign Language and English Lower School, New York City
WOODSON , Jacqueline. Each Kindness. illus. by E. B. Lewis. 32p. Penguin/Nancy Paulsen Bks. Oct. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-399-24652-4.
Gr 2-5–Always on-target navigating difficulties in human relationships, Woodson teams up with Lewis to deal a blow to the pervasive practice–among students of all economic backgrounds–of excluding those less fortunate. When a new student arrives midterm, head down, with broken sandals, she sits right next to Chloe, an African American girl. The teacher introduces the pigtailed new student as Maya, but hardly anyone says hello, nor does Chloe give a welcoming smile. Lyrical and stylistically tight writing act in perfect counterpoint to the gentle but detailed watercolor paintings of a diverse rural classroom. Chloe’s best friends “this year?? call Maya “Never New” because her clothes are always secondhand. Each time the cheerful, independent Maya invites the clique members to play, they refuse. Woodson’s writing, full of revelation and short on reckoning, gives opportunity for countless inferences and deep discussion and dovetails with the illustrations of children’s facial expressions from surprising angles, expansive countryside views, and pools of water and windows, which invite readers to pause, reflect, and empathize. When their teacher invites them to throw a pebble in water and watch the ripples radiate to symbolize an act of kindness they share with the class, Chloe stops. Maya no longer is there. Her family has had to move. Had Chloe been kind even once? With growing income disparity, and bullying on the rise, this story of remorse and lost opportunity arrives none too soon.–Sara Lissa Paulson, American Sign Language and English Lower School, New York City
FERRIS , Jerri Chase. Noah Webster & His Words. illus. by Vincent X. Kirsch. 32p. bibliog. chron. websites. CIP. Houghton Harcourt. Oct. 2012. RTE $16.99. ISBN 978-0-547-39055-0. LC 2011013018.
K-Gr 3–Best known today for his dictionary, Webster was an important figure in early American education. As the new nation was forming, he championed the idea of standardized spellings and usage. He simplified British words, such as “plough” to “plow,” and published the first American schoolbooks. This picture-book biography bursts with charm in telling Webster’s story. The author puts some words into dictionary form as a reminder of Webster’s claim to fame. For example, instead of a farmer, “Noah wanted to be SCHOL-AR [noun: one who goes to school; a person who knows a lot].” The watercolor-and-pencil cartoon illustrations are a perfect complement to the text. A page describing Webster’s high self-confidence depicts him with a huge head. An image of young Noah nose to nose with his irritated father is both funny and telling. Primary and secondary sources are listed, as are websites for more information and activities. This informative book would be a great addition to dictionary lessons or to studies of the formation of the United States.–Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher’s School, Richmond, VA
HOPKINSON , Deborah. Annie and Helen. illus. by Raul Colón. 48p. further reading. websites. CIP. Random/Schwartz & Wade Bks. Sept. 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-375-85706-5; PLB $20.99. ISBN 978-0-375-95706-2. LC 2010031443.
Gr 2-5–In this lucid picture book, readers follow Annie Sullivan’s journey to teach young Helen Keller, at age seven, noted for her tantrums. Most know that Sullivan used the manual alphabet to fingerspell in the child’s hand, but what is breathtakingly shown here, through accurate, cross-hatched watercolor paintings; excerpts from Sullivan’s correspondence to her former teacher; and concise and poetic language, is the woman’s patience and belief in the intelligence of her student to grasp the concepts of language. The first epiphany was at the outdoor pump when the girl comprehended that w-a-t-e-r was a word. “Now Helen began to devour words.” Sullivan, then moved beyond names for things, “spoke” to Keller constantly and naturally, spelling rich, wonderful sentences into her palm, “like a mother to a child.” Helen quickly started learning written language: letters, words, and with word flashcards, sentences. Sensitively wrought illustrations clearly depict her learning written English via raised letters. Most transcendent of all is a full-page copy of Helen’s first letter home. The endpapers offer a dozen photos of the pair, and an embossed Braille alphabet adorns the back cover. While there is some fictionalization, it resides most firmly in fact, elucidating the brilliant process of educating the deaf and blind pioneered by Annie Sullivan. Pair this book with Emily Arnold McCully’s My Heart Glow (Hyperion, 2008), the story of one of Helen’s predecessors, Alice Cogswell, and her teacher Thomas Gallaudet, whose relationship resulted in the birth of American Sign Language for teaching the Deaf.–Sara Lissa Paulson, American Sign Language and English Lower School, New York City
MARKEL , Michelle. The Fantastic Jungles of Henri Rousseau. illus. by Amanda Hall. 34p. CIP. Eerdmans. 2012. RTE $17.00. ISBN 978-0-8028-5364-6. LC 2011035838.
PreS-Gr 3–Drawing on the naïve techniques found in the paintings of the 19th-century French toll collector, Hall depicts Rousseau’s life while introducing his style and subject matter in her fanciful watercolor and acrylic scenes. Markel’s well-chosen episodes begin with the purchase of his first paints and brushes–at age 40. Compact sentences convey this self-taught artist’s rocky journey, leaving room for Hall’s interpretation. One dynamic composition propels Rousseau, clad in black, toward readers; one eye is enlarged behind a magnifying glass as he studies and scatters colorful postcards, catalogs, and paintings from the Louvre. Humor is conveyed even when his art is being rejected by the Salon experts. As the tiny man wheels his cart of canvases up to imposing, bewhiskered figures in tuxedos, close inspection reveals that some are monkeys. An author’s note highlights Rousseau’s reaction to the exotic plants at the Jardin des Plantes: “…it’s as though he enters into a dream. It’s like he is someone else completely.” Hall’s portrait accompanying that idea in the narrative is formed from greenery, flowers, and wheat–part Rousseau, part Arcimboldo. The 1889 International Exhibition also opened the artist’s world; afterward, his jungle canvases came to life, and a tiger crawled into his studio. Ultimately, he was fêted by luminaries identified in the illustrator’s note. This is not only a visually exciting introduction to a well-known artist, but also an uplifting model of passion and perseverance. Pair it with Doris Kutschbach’s Henri Rousseau’s Jungle Book (Prestel, 2005) for a slightly different perspective.–Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library
RAPPAPORT , Doreen. Helen’s Big World: The Life of Helen Keller. illus. by Matt Tavares. 48p. bibliog. chron. further reading. websites. Hyperion/Disney. Oct. 2012. RTE $17.99. ISBN 978-0-7868-0890-8.
K-Gr 4–In a format similar to Martin’s Big Words (Hyperion, 2001), Rappaport uses quotations from Helen Keller to provide the framework for this picture-book biography. A great design, incorporating the words in large type, makes this book visually striking. Large scale paintings, rendered in watercolor, pencil, and gouache, are presented on one and a half or double pages. The full images, without borders, invite children into Helen’s world, while showing how big it truly became. The opening endpaper showcases the pivotal “water” moment, with teacher Annie Sullivan’s and the child’s hands accompanied by the quotation, “We do not think with eyes and ears, and our capacity for thought is not measured by five senses.” The narrative begins at Keller’s childhood home, but expands out to describe her experiences at college, with public speaking, and in championing social causes. A series of excerpts from letters demonstrates her growing proficiency in writing. A dramatic spread shows the pupil and teacher in a boat, majestically cresting a wave, emphasizing what the youngster does experience more than what she does not. While there are many books available about Helen Keller for this age group, this title offers a unique and beautiful perspective on her life.–Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher’s School, Richmond, VA
