All on a Sunday Afternoon. CD. 36 min. with DVD. Sugar Free Allstars. 2012. ISBN unavail. $12.99.
PreS-Gr 3–On their third CD for families, the Oklahoma City-based Sugar Free Allstars—Chris (Boom!) Wiser and Rob (Dr. Rock) Martin—add to their bluesy, funky catalog of music. Many songs feature the talent of guest artists: vocals by Jack Forman (of Recess Monkey) and Shawana Kemp (of Shine & the Moonbeams) on “Gotta Get Up” (a kicking song sure to get you up and on your way in the morning); Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood (from Trout Fishing in America) playing electric guitar and electric bass, respectively, on the title song (a laid-back number about hanging out with family); and Marty Beller playing percussion on “Put ‘Em Away” (a driving, soul-filled pick-up-the-toys song); Keller Williams playing guitar on “Love Train” (a Motown-inspired soul-filled throwback inspired by the TV show Soul Train). Other highlights include “Hiccup” (a funky, funny tune about having them), “Very Best Friend” (this tribute to BFFs features Wiser on organ), “99 Questions” (a gospel-infused number about the multitude of questions kids ask). The bonus DVD features a full-length concert by the Sugar Free Allstars. Kids of all ages will agree this is a satisfying listen.–Stephanie Bange, Wright State University, Dayton, OH
