redstar September 2012 Reviews: MultimediaPig Tales: Pig Pig Returns and Little Pig Joins the Band. DVD. 14 min. with tchr’s. guide. Nutmeg Media. 2012. ISBN 1-933938-87-0. $69.95.
PreS-Gr 2–These two charming tales (2011, both Charlesbridge) by author/illustrators David McPhail and David Hyde Costello each feature piglets who, though they are young, learn very mature lessons. McPhail’s Pig Pig doesn’t want to leave his mother and cat to vacation across the country with his aunt and uncle, but as he becomes interested in the unusual places that he visits, he soon discovers that he’s having a great time. Although he worries that his mother and cat may have forgotten about him, he soon learns that they are eager to welcome him home, and he regales them with stories of his exploits. Costello’s Little Pig is too small to play any of the musical instruments in the family band, and he starts to feel left out. He soon learns that he has one talent that the chaotic and disorganized family band needs more than they know! As the band leader, Little Pig earns the family’s respect and learns that even the smallest member can do great things. With charming illustrations, music, and fun sound effects, both stories are narrated by their author. Each tale is followed by an interview with the author-illustrator, who explains the story’s’ motivation and the technique used to create the illustrations. These stories work well together and the guide offers excellent suggestions for discussions about problem-solving, overcoming fears, and dealing with siblings.–MaryAnn Karre, Horace Mann and Thomas Jefferson Elementary Schools, Binghamton, NY

redstar September 2012 Reviews: MultimediaA Sick Day for Amos McGee. DVD. 9 min. Weston Woods. 2012. ISBN 978-0-545-44751-5. $59.95; CD, ISBN 978-0-545-44756-0: $12.95; CD with hardcover book, ISBN 978-0-545-44809-3: $29.95.
PreS-Gr 1–When Amos McGee wakes up feeling under the weather and stays home from work, his animal friends at the zoo board the bus to pay Amos a visit. They spend the day cheering Amos up by playing quiet games, caring for his every need, and reading him a bedtime story so he won’t be afraid of the dark. The final frame shows a pile of animals snuggled around Amos in an attitude of comfort and friendship. Erin Stead’s gentle pencil-and-woodblock illustrations in muted colors with spots of red match the tone of Philip Stead’s Caldecott-winning story (Roaring Brook, 2010) and depict the real comfort that friendship provides. David de Vries offers perfectly paced, quiet narration to fit the sweet nature of the tale. He provides a distinct voice for Amos as well as the bus driver (the two characters given solo lines in the story). Just enough movement is added to Stead’s illustrations to hold the attention of viewers. An excellent music score is provided by Ernest Troost. This enchanting production adds a whole new level of enjoyment to this winning picture book.–Deanna Romriell, Salt Lake City Public Library, UT

redstar September 2012 Reviews: MultimediaIf a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front. DVD. 85 min. Prod. by Marshall Curry Prods. Dist. by Bullfrog Films. 2011. ISBN 1-93777-21-9. $295.
Gr 10 Up–This fact-filled program utilizes archival footage, interviews, and commentary to relate the story of one man’s involvement in the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), an organization described by law enforcement as a domestic terror organization. It traces the evolution of Daniel McGowan from city resident to environmental activist, chronicling his involvement in property destruction as a member of the ELF and his arrest and current incarceration in a federal prison in Illinois. In a low-ked voice, the male narrator reviews the history of environmental protest led by Earth First and its various monkey-wrenching activities. More radical elements of the group split-off to form the Earth Liberation Front, a loose collection of anonymous members who allegedly burned timber company offices, SUV dealerships, and a ski lodge in Vail, Colorado. Daniel McGowan was arrested in December 2005 and charged as a domestic terrorist. The script of this documentary is unbiased. Interviews with ELF activists, law enforcement officers, government agents, and citizens impacted by ELF are presented. Open-ended questions are posed, such as what is terrorism and isn’t big business responsible for oil spills and mountaintop removal mining? The subject matter, off-color language, and slow pace of the program make it most useful for upper grades. Classes in journalism, political science, and current events can utilize this program as well as literature classes reading Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang.– Patricia Ann Owens, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Mt. Carmel

redstar September 2012 Reviews: MultimediaJim Thorpe: The World’s Greatest Athlete. DVD. 85 min./56 min. with tchr’s. guide. Moira Prods. 2009, 2012 release. ISBN 978-0-97710379-9. $85.
Gr 6 Up–Jim Thorpe’s many accomplishments as well as his shortcomings are described in this remarkable film. Born in a one-room cabin in Oklahoma’s Indian Territory in 1887, Thorpe overcame the many stigmas and hardships associated with being a Native American at that time. Even though he resisted being sent to schools intended to minimize his ethnicity, it was just that residence at an Eastern school and the recognition of his athletic potential by legendary coach “Pop” Warner that opened his access to the world. Despite overt discrimination, Thorpe went on to win gold medals in the 1912 Olympics; they were recalled due to controversy about his amateur athlete status, but reinstated after his death. The program doesn’t whitewash the many difficulties in his personal life nor the resiliency with which he moved from track to professional baseball and football to his final work as a booster of Junior Olympics and a motivational speaker to the Native American community. The producers have utilized a rich blend of vintage footage and stills, dramatic recreations, excerpts from oral history collections, as well as commentary by Thorpe’s family to depict this complex yet fascinating individual. The DVD contains two versions of the program, both with a nine-part chapter selection option. The condensed version is perfectly fine for a classroom setting, while the full-length feature adds more details and includes a superior bonus segment of commentary by the filmmakers on the making of the production. A very comprehensive, well-crafted teacher’s guide is available online as well as on the DVD, making this an excellent addition to all media collections.–Dwain Thomas, formerly Lake Park High School, Roselle, IL

redstar September 2012 Reviews: MultimediaThe Fairy Ring, Or Elsie and Frances Fool the World. By Mary Losure. 2 CDs. 2:26 hrs. Brilliance Audio. 2012. ISBN 978-1-4558-5194-2. $49.97.
Gr 4-8–This is the true tale of Elsie Wright, 15, and Frances Griffith, 9, who concocted a fairy hoax in the early 1900s that grew well beyond their expectations. Tired of being teased by their parents for their stories, Elsie painted and then cut out detailed illustrations of fairies. The girls photographed the “fairies” with themselves in the picture. When Elsie’s mother mentioned at a Theosophist meeting that her daughter had taken a picture of fairies, the hoax quickly escalated. A number of adults, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, promoted the photos as the real deal. Mary Losure’s narrative account does an excellent job of explaining how a childish fabrication became an international sensation in her intriguing book (Candlewick, 2012). Narrator Nicola Barber provides excellent pacing, unique voices for the girls, and an inviting tone that will maintain listeners’ attention. Have the book available so listeners can peruse the fascinating photos and drawing.–Deanna Romriell, Salt Lake City Public Library, UT

redstar September 2012 Reviews: MultimediaLove, Mouserella. By David Ezra Stein. cassette or CD. 30 min. Recorded Books. 2012. cassette: ISBN 978-1-4640-4034-1, CD: ISBN 978-1-4640-4033-7. $15.75; book, ISBN 978-0-3992-5410-9. $15.99.
PreS-Gr 1–Mouserella’s letter to her Grandmouse describes her days with the meandering topics of a child, occasionally concluding “and that’s all…but” as she continues with descriptions of her daily activities. Listeners learn about her pet caterpillar and the ladybug she has taught to fetch, a visit to the zoo with a scary cat, a blackout, and how to make shadow bunnies. They will want to scrutinize Mouserella’s drawings, pictures from her new camera, and illustrations of the events she describes as they follow along with the book. Author David Ezra Stein has also illustrated this terrific book (Penguin/Nancy Paulsen Books, 2011), creating illustrations with watercolors, stencils, and water-soluble crayons that perfectly reflect a young child’s artwork, down to the doodled end pages and ice-pop splotches. The conversational pace of the narration by Michele O. Medlin makes the hand-printed text with its multicolored and occasionally all capital lettering easy to follow. She skillfully captures a child’s intonation. Page-turn signals are optional. The limited vocabulary, engaging illustrations, and childish sensibilities allow this to work as an early reader. Paired with the book, it may also inspire children to write letters to family and friends.–Janet S. Thompson, Chicago Public Library, IL

redstar September 2012 Reviews: MultimediaAll on a Sunday Afternoon. CD. 36 min. with DVD. Sugar Free Allstars. 2012. ISBN unavail. $12.99.
PreS-Gr 3–On their third CD for families, the Oklahoma City-based Sugar Free Allstars—Chris (Boom!) Wiser and Rob (Dr. Rock) Martin—add to their bluesy, funky catalog of music. Many songs feature the talent of guest artists: vocals by Jack Forman (of Recess Monkey) and Shawana Kemp (of Shine & the Moonbeams) on “Gotta Get Up” (a kicking song sure to get you up and on your way in the morning); Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood (from Trout Fishing in America) playing electric guitar and electric bass, respectively, on the title song (a laid-back number about hanging out with family); and Marty Beller playing percussion on “Put ‘Em Away” (a driving, soul-filled pick-up-the-toys song); Keller Williams playing guitar on “Love Train” (a Motown-inspired soul-filled throwback inspired by the TV show Soul Train). Other highlights include “Hiccup” (a funky, funny tune about having them), “Very Best Friend” (this tribute to BFFs features Wiser on organ), “99 Questions” (a gospel-infused number about the multitude of questions kids ask). The bonus DVD features a full-length concert by the Sugar Free Allstars. Kids of all ages will agree this is a satisfying listen.–Stephanie Bange, Wright State University, Dayton, OH

K-Gr 5–Grab your fishing gear and your tent, leave technology behind, and join the award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers (Justin Lansing and Joe Mailander) on a leisurely canoe trip down the Mississippi River. Vocal performances are outstanding, with plenty of lovely harmonies. This unique, outstanding musical performance should have a place in every library.–Beverly Wrigglesworth, San Antonio Public Library, TX

redstar September 2012 Reviews: MultimediaIn Tents. CD. approx. 48 min. Recess Monkey. 2012. ISBN unavail. $14.99.
PreS-Gr 3–The always creative children’s recording group Recess Monkey continues their high level of musicianship on their latest themed recording. This time, their musical instruments are traded for a run-down circus! The story opens with the trumpet fanfare of “In Tents” (about the circus coming to town), pops with yummy “Popcorn,” and pitches with “Lemonade” Listeners feel the excitement of circus rides in “Sit and Spin,” then enjoys attractions and sideshows (“Human Cannonball,” “Odditorium,” “Bouncy House,” “Carousel,” “Twins,” “Dancing Bear,” “Crystal Ball), until finally it’s time to fold up the circus gig in this town and move on (“Show on the Road”). Each song is full of the joy and excitement of a visit to the circus. The musical styles vary throughout, matching each song’s subject perfectly. These guys continue staying on the cutting edge of family-friendly music that is full of joy from start to finish.–Stephanie Bange, Wright State University, Dayton, OH

redstar September 2012 Reviews: MultimediaSongs in the Shade of the Flamboyant Tree: French Creole Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes. CD. 43 min. with hardcover book. Prod. by Secret Mountain. Dist. by Independent Publishers Group. 2012. ISBN 978-2-923163-82-6. $16.95.
PreS-Gr 2– Chantal Grosléziat and Paul Mindy present another multicultural anthology, this time a collection of 30 French Creole lullabies and nursery rhymes. The outstanding vocal and instrumental performers hail from Haiti, Guadaloupe, Martinique, and Reunion Island. In addition to familiar instruments such as piano, guitar, banjo, synthesizer, bells, and accordion, listeners will hear instruments such as bamboo flute, panpipe, kayamb, bobre, bélé drums, rouleur (drum), Jamaican steel drum, and friction drum. Among the songs and nursery rhymes are: “Aliyèt” (Aliette), “Ti Zwazo” (little bird), “Pich Mimi” (pinch me), “Zinzin,” “Dlo Cho épi Kako”(hot water and cocoa), “Ti Train Longtemps” (the little train of yore), “Papiyon Volé” (fly butterfly), “P’tit Fleur Fanée” (little wilted flower), “Sat Maron” (the stray cat), and “Solda Ka Kaka” (soldiers poop). On double- and single-page spreads in the accompanying book are the English words for the song or nursery rhyme, enhanced by brilliantly colored illustrations. The notes at the back of the book include the place origin of the piece, the performer, the French Creole words with an English translation, and interesting facts about the song or nursery rhyme. An excellent introduction to these cultures’ traditions.–Beverly Wrigglesworth, San Antonio Public Library, TX

redstar September 2012 Reviews: MultimediaInvisible Friends. CD. approx. 42 min. dogonfleas.com. 2012. ISBN unavail. $12.97.
PreS-Gr 4–Dog on Fleas return with 16 light, funny, original tunes. Opening with the peppy “There’s a Band Playing in My Head,” a rhyming nonsensical song about musical instruments, leader Dean Jones sings his heart out about his “Treehouse,” his good luck in “Fortunate Mistake,” celebrates fun at the “Party,” and describes types of fish in “The Smelt.” He mixes it up with songs like the hooty and nearly a cappella “Just Another Finger” (celebrating the thumb), the response ballad “Peapod” (sailing in an unusual craft), the Caribbean-flavored “Charm Them Birdies” (describing how smooth one can be), and the mysterious sounding “Invisible Friends” (about a never-ending party). Lyrics are often clever, leaving hidden messages for listeners to contemplate their extended meanings. Tunes are imminently singable, and harmonies are spot-on. Occasional use of musical bridges and added musical flourishes add depth and variety. Sure to keep kids up on their feet and dancing throughout.–Stephanie Bange, Wright State University, Dayton, OH
