FLEMING, Candace. Oh, No! illus. by Eric Rohmann. 40p. CIP. Random/Schwartz & Wade Bks. Sept. 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-375-84271-9; PLB $20.99. ISBN 978-0-375-94557-1. LC 2009045564.
PreS-Gr 2–Rohmann’s relief prints bring an exuberant humor to Fleming’s rhythmic read-aloud. When an elastic-looking frog falls into a deep hole (“Ribbit-oops!”), a timid mouse, lugubrious loris, resourceful sun bear, and jaunty monkey all tumble down after him during unsuccessful rescue attempts. Fleming’s bouncing rhymes and repeated lines–set in comfortably large, rounded text–entice readers into an enjoyable delivery complete with snarled sound effects and onomatopoeic exclamations. The repetitive “Oh, no!” allows listeners to join in with the engaging text as the animals face a lurking tiger eager to snack on the helpless group. Rohmann knows to leave swathes of open space in his full-spread illustrations, focusing attention on his expressive, energetic animals in their vibrant safari palette of bright browns, tans, and greens. In a satisfying conclusion, the refrain returns as the tiger, now stuck in the hole, asks the released animals if they will help him clamber out. Oh, no!–Robbin E. Friedman, Chappaqua Library, NY
FRAZEE, Marla. Boot & Shoe. illus. by author. 40p. CIP. S & S/Beach Lane Bks. Oct. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-2247-6; ebook $12.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-5706-5. LC 2011035990.
PreS-Gr 3–Littermates and fellow adoptees, two small pups share a mutual existence, eating from the same bowl, sleeping on same blue cushion, and tinkling on the same tree. However, they diverge in their daytime activities: Boot occupies the back porch while Shoe prefers the front porch. When a mischievous squirrel shakes up their routines, both dogs give chase, eventually collapsing, exhausted, into two separate heaps. After recovering, they search for one another, each taking up the other’s post to wait for his sibling’s return. Their vigils last through rainy afternoon, hungry evening, and shivery night, with morning bringing only more loneliness. Fortunately, “even in the worst of times, a dog still needs to pee,” and the two finally meet up at their favorite tree for a joyful reunion. There is genius in this tale’s simplicity and Frazee’s understated text, repetitive language, sentence structure, and perfect comic timing play the heartwarming humor to the hilt. The pencil-and-gouache artwork, set against creamy French vanilla backdrops, blends precise lines with fluid motion, and the muted colors subtly mirror the narrative’s restraint and changing moods. The snow-white pooches, with their black button noses and eyes hidden by furry fringe, are true charmers, and their emotions are masterfully conveyed through eloquent body language. A dog-lover’s delight and tender ode to friendship.– Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal
JENKINS, Emily. Lemonade in Winter: A Book About Two Kids Counting Money. illus. by G. Brian Karas. 40p. CIP. Random/Schwartz & Wade Bks. Sept. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-375-85883-3; PLB $18.99. ISBN 978-0-375-95883-0. LC 2010024135.
PreS-Gr 2–On a cold winter day as a mean wind blows and icicles hang from windowsills, Pauline and her younger brother, John-John, decide to have a lemonade stand. Gathering all their quarters (Pauline’s favorite coins), they buy their supplies and make lemonade, limeade, and lemon-limeade. On their mostly empty street with the snow falling, they attract a few customers–Harvey walking his three dogs, Mrs. Gordon and her twins, Heather and Aidan strolling arm in arm, and five manicurists in puffy coats. Despite their advertising, entertainment, decorations, and sales, the children make only four dollars, which is less than the cost of their supplies but enough for two Popsicles. Karas’s illustrations, rendered with brush and walnut ink in sepia tones, capture the half-light of an overcast winter day as the children, bundled in warm clothes, tend their stand and count their earnings. A last page, called “Pauline Explains Money to John-John,” shows both fronts and backs of different coins and explains their worth. This quirky tale is a boon for young entrepreneurs, who will enjoy looking at the humorous details in the pictures as much as working out the math after each sale. Abounding with teaching possibilities, it’s a solid selection for most libraries.– Mary Jean Smith, formerly at Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN
MARINO, Gianna. Too Tall Houses. illus. by author. 40p. Viking. Sept. 2012. RTE $16.99. ISBN 978-0-670-01314-2.
K-Gr 2–Owl and Rabbit live side by side in two small huts. Rabbit tends to his vegetable garden and Owl perches on the roof, gazing at the forest. Trouble starts when Rabbit’s plants grow too tall, blocking Owl’s vista. Angry Owl makes his abode taller, Rabbit follows suit, and a construction race ensues. When the houses become impossibly sky-high, cartoonishly looming over continents, a formidable wind blows them down. With their dwellings in ruins, the former friends wisely decide that it is much better to join forces and build one small house, where they settle in harmony. Laid out in spreads, the illustrations feature impeccably detailed pencil drawings combined with sumptuously colored gouache backgrounds. The animals are full of heartfelt emotions, from anger and frustration to happy contentment. Marino interjects a few humorous details throughout the story–the expressions of grumpy Owl getting watered by Rabbit or flying with a squashed tomato on his head are priceless. This story about friendship and togetherness contains a great lesson without being didactic or moralizing and should be welcome in most collections.– Yelena Alekseyeva-Popova, formerly at Chappaqua Library, NY
STEAD, Philip C. Bear Has a Story to Tell. illus. by Erin E. Stead. 32p. CIP. Roaring Brook/Neal Porter. Sept. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-1-59643-745-6. LC 2011033795.
K-Gr 2–Before hunkering down to hibernate, Bear wants to share a story with his friends, but Mouse, Duck, Frog, and Mole are too busy with their own winter preparations to listen. Months later, Bear wakes up and is eager to reunite with his pals and finally tell his tale. He “clear[s] his throat,” “puff[s] out his chest,” and then, much to his chagrin, forgets what he wants to say. His friends offer prompts that jog his memory: “Maybe your story is about a bear,” “Maybe your story is about the busy time just before winter,” “there should be other characters too.” In lovely circular fashion, the ending has Bear sitting on a log beginning his story that readers will remember as the first sentence of the book. Erin Stead’s exquisite pencil and watercolor illustrations capture the beauty of the changing landscape with falling leaves, first snowflakes, and starry evenings. Bear’s nurturing acts of kindness are also conveyed, from raising a paw to check the wind direction as Duck flies away to gently tucking Frog under a warm blanket of leaves and pine needles. The rhythms of nature and of storytelling are in fine form here.–Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada
TALBOTT, Hudson. It’s All About Me- ow. illus. by author. 32p. CIP. Penguin/Nancy Paulsen Bks. Sept. 2012. RTE $16.99. ISBN 978-0-399-25403-1. LC 2011050240.
K-Gr 3–Buddy, an older cat, welcomes three newly weaned kittens into his abode and begins to teach them the ins and outs of managing the humans in the household. He is prepared with charts and diagrams that compare cats to humans (Us: nose/ cute and powerful, Them: nose/big but feeble), a “catwalk through history,” and a little lecture on the value of “purr therapy” for the modern family. He also gives instruction in “catitude,” including proper tail positioning and what to do if humans forget that you are the center of their world. Anyone who has ever been owned by a cat will connect with all the behaviors described and enjoy recognizing their own pets as they laugh at Buddy’s antics. The watercolor, colored-pencil, and ink illustrations are crisp and lively and add to the humor of the situations described. The book is better suited for independent reading than group sharing because of the small details and numerous asides. Buddy’s instruction will be enjoyed by most cat/animal lovers.–Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ
WILLEMS, Mo. Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs: As Retold by Mo Willems. illus. by reteller. 40p. Harper
Collins/Balzer & Bray. Sept. 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-06-210418-2.
PreS-Gr 3–This zany addition to the fractured-fairy-tale canon features a yellow-haired Goldilocks in a pink dress and three dinosaurs–Papa, Mama, and “some other Dinosaur who happened to be visiting from Norway.” Arising one morning, the dinosaurs cook their chocolate pudding “at varying temperatures” and intentionally leave the pudding bowls out to lure “a little succulent child” into their home. Goldilocks, being a heedless little girl who “never listened to warnings about the dangers of barging into strange, enormous houses,” does just that and proceeds to stuff herself with the dinosaurs’ bait–er, chocolate pudding. Tired and sleepy, she finds the bedroom but–uh, oh!–overhears the dinosaurs outside gloating, “Delicious chocolate-filled-little-girl-bonbons are yummier when they’re asleep!” Suddenly realizing that she’s in the wrong story, Goldilocks beats a hasty retreat just as the three dinosaurs return licking their lips–and happily finds her way into the right story with the three bears on the last page. This is pure Mo Willems, from the many visual gags in the cleanly drawn illustrations and the tight, tongue-in-cheek story line to the endpapers, decorated with dozens of hilarious crossed-out title possibilities. The book’s generous trim size, varied illustrative perspectives, and dramatic text lend this title perfectly to a lively group read-aloud; pair it with a traditional version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears to discuss differences and similarities. Readers of all ages will find much to chuckle about in this wacky retelling.– Kathleen Finn, St. Francis Xavier School, Winooski, VT
WOLF, Karina. The Insomniacs. illus. by The Brothers Hilts. 32p. Putnam. Aug. 2012. RTE $16.99. ISBN 978-0-399-25665-3.
K-Gr 2–The spindly legged, pale Insomniac family–Mother, Father and little Mika–lead a regular diurnal life until Mrs. Insomniac gets a new job “twelve time zones away.” Once they arrive at their new home, the family members live up to their name and goth visages–despite their efforts, they cannot fall asleep at night but snooze at work and school. Unable to rectify this dire situation by themselves, they venture out to observe animal sleeping habits for ideas. When they see bats “dipp[ing], div[ing] and squeal[ing] with delight,” the Insomniacs decide that they, too, can lead a happy and fulfilling nocturnal existence, exchanging “the sun [for]…stars and fireflies and northern lights.” Father develops his photos in a darkroom. Mother studies the stars through her telescope, and Mika goes to night school remotely. Reminiscent of the work of Edward Gorey, Charles Addams, and a certain Tim Burton-esque aesthetic, the art for this book forges its own style without feeling derivative. Full-page mixed-media (charcoal, pencil, and computer) illustrations are cleverly designed and depict the sepia Insomniacs against the backgrounds of saturated yellow for daylight, red for interiors, and deep dark blue for nighttime scenes. An offbeat (but satisfying) bedtime story for fans of quirky tales and nighttime adventures.– Yelena Alekseyeva-Popova, formerly at Chappaqua Library, NY
CHIN, Jason. Island: A Story of the Galápagos. illus. by author. 40p. diags. maps. Roaring Brook/Neal Porter. Sept. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-1-59643-716-6. LC 2011033797.
Gr 3-6–Chin combines a bit of storytelling, factual explanations, and large and small paintings to chronicle the “birth” and ongoing development of islands in this far-off ocean cluster. A focus on the evolutionary rise and fall of the islands and skillful arrangement of an especially large number of images distinguish his presentation from the many books on the subject. Animals and plants simultaneously arrive and evolve in the changing terrain as a particular island rises from the ocean, develops over millions of years, and eventually sinks back into the water. The attractive interplay of full- and double-page paintings with pages checkered with numerous small views results in an absorbing, graphic presentation. Chin closes with three single page essays. The first explains the 1835 visit of Charles Darwin to the Galápagos, which spurred his thinking and our later understanding about evolution. This is followed by explanations of how the movement of the Earth’s crust engenders the rise and fall of the islands and a look at the endemic species of this region and their varied development from island to island. There are no further sources on the Galápagos or on the animals of the region, but this fine introduction to them will surely stimulate readers’ interest.–Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston
FLORIAN, Douglas. Shiver Me Timbers!: Pirate Poems & Paintings. illus. by Robert Neubecker. 32p. CIP. S & S/Beach Lane Bks. Aug. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-1321-4; ebook $12.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-5712-6. LC 2010048963.
Gr 2-5–From the smiling, rollicking kids on the cover laying claim to a beach full of treasure to the shipload of fierce, sneering, plundering, cutlass-waving, face-making buccaneers, boastful of their scurrilous behavior, these pirates are a motley group. In 19 poems, they teach “Pirate Patter” and punishment and describe some less-than-appetizing meals at sea; their penchant for stealing, burying, and sometimes losing track of treasure; and their weapons. To hear them tell it, they’re “…rude, crude dudes with attitudes” who practice growling–“Arrr!”–and “…love to try to make you cry.” “A pirate’s life is not for me!” says the young bloke rowing away from the ship under a starry sky. The up- and downsides of life on a pirate ship are evident in Neubecker’s bold, colorful, detail-filled cartoonlike illustrations, outlined in India ink. Kids, boys especially, will be charmed by these feisty poems.–Susan Scheps, formerly at Shaker Heights Public Library, OH
SCHUBERT, Leda. Monsieur Marceau: Actor Without Words. illus. by Gérard DuBois. 40p. further reading. notes. photos. CIP. Roaring Brook/Neal Porter. Sept. 2012. RTE $17.99. ISBN 978-1-59643-529-2. LC 2011033798.
Gr 1-3–It is fitting that this superb picture-book biography is short on words and long on visuals. The spare text marvelously captures the essence of the artist, depicting a man whose choice to be silent was born of an awareness of the damages of war. Born in 1923 to a musical family who lived near the French/German border, Marceau idolized Charlie Chaplin and began emulating him at a young age. When World War II broke out, residents of Strasbourg were forced to leave their homes, and later Marceau joined the French Resistance. After the war, he changed his original surname, Mangel, to Marceau “so that people wouldn’t know he was Jewish.” Marceau studied mime and created the character Bip, whose smashed stovepipe hat, white makeup, red carnation, and sad eyes became known the world over. The stunning oil pastel paintings are as somber, joyful, and expressive as the man himself; they depict him fighting a bull, chasing butterflies, or crumbling in sadness. Covering much the same ground as Gloria Spielman’s Marcel Marceau (Lerner, 2011) but in a more compelling manner, this exquisite book has an informative afterword and a page on the art of miming. A noteworthy choice for all collections.–Teri Markson, Los Angeles Public Library
WARD, Helen, retel. The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse. illus. by reteller. 48p. Candlewick/Templar. Sept. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-7636-6098-7.
PreS-Gr 3–In brief, beautifully descriptive text placed amid charming watercolor illustrations, Ward retells Aesop’s familiar tale of the field mouse whose city-dwelling cousin tries to convince him that the sights, sounds, and food in the city make it a far more wondrous place to live than the plain, sometimes scary, countryside. With the advent of colder weather, the country mouse–now “less certain of his contentedness”–travels to his cousin’s fancy city apartment but soon realizes that the true dangers there overshadow the luxurious environment and rich food. As luck would have it, his hiding place (from the dog) is an apple basket in the very same truck that brought him to the city, and he is returned to his beloved countryside to sleep away the winter in his own soft nest. Ward’s lush pastoral illustrations bring out the deep contrasts between rural and city life. As the city cousin describes the “noise and bustle and hum” of his home, the accompanying painting shows a huge, shining harvest moon resting on a field of wheat sheaves and branches of plump blueberries and golden apples. City scenes are busy with tall, sprawling buildings and their leaded windows; armloads of Christmas gifts and ornaments; overladen sweet tables. This retelling, closely based on the original short fable, is a worthy addition to any collection.–Susan Scheps, formerly at Shaker Heights Public Library, OH
