redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 Everything You Need to Know About Marijuana in 22 Minutes. DVD. 22 min. with tchr’s. guide. Human Relations Media. 2012. ISBN 978-1-55548-571-9. $149.95.
Gr 7 Up–Teens Katie Chung and Max Rein host this powerful presentation that provides information about the dangers and risks of marijuana use. Students receive a clear message that marijuana is an unsafe, addictive, and debilitating drug. Live-action footage coupled with visuals and realistic descriptions present the effects of marijuana on the body and mind in a direct manner. Research statistics and interviews with experts as well as young people who explain how marijuana use has affected their lives are key in emphasizing its harmful effects. The introduction provides statistical information about marijuana followed by ten sections: “Marijuana High,” “THC,” “Learning and Memory,” “Driving Under the Influence,” “Mental Health Risks,” “Risks to Physical Health,” “K2 and Spice,” “Tolerance, Dependence and Addiction,” “Life Goals and What to Do If You have a Problem. The segments are cleverly separated using a large-screen digital timer to count down the minutes. The concluding section is particularly important because it explains how to find help to overcome an addiction as teens share their experiences on “kicking the habit.” This program will engage students and could serve as an introduction to the topic or an excellent supplement to drug awareness and health curriculums in middle and secondary schools.–Linda M. redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 Bink & Gollie. DVD. 14 min. Weston Woods. 2012. ISBN 978-0545-44752-2. $59.95; CD, ISBN 978-0-545-44757-7: $12.95; CD with hardcover book, ISBN 978-0-545-44808-6: $12.95.
K-Gr 3–Kate DeCamillo and Alison McGhee’s humorous tale (Candlewick, 2010) about friendship has won numerous well-deserved awards, including the Theodor Seuss Geisel Medal. Bink and Gollie live in an exotic tree house and often communicate by walkie-talkie. These three short stories feature tall, sensible Gollie who has a rich imagination and a formal way of speaking, and short, tow-headed Bink who is more impulsive and spontaneous. Multi-colored socks create a temporary rift and require compromise. An imaginary trip is taken to the Andes, with annoying interruptions. A fish captures Bink’s heart, but its survival depends on Gollie’s quick thinking. Each tale is both simple and multi-layered, with overlapping themes. Tony Fucile’s illustrations have been nicely animated, and original music has been composed by David Mansfield. Kate Micucci and Rikki Lindhome provide the voices for the main characters. A five-minute interview with the illustrator offers some background about his career as well as his inspiration and techniques. A read-along feature is optional. This is a joyous celebration of friendship with its occasional bumps and irritations, but underlying strength and commitment. Viewers will delight in the stories and their warm, humorous messages.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary, Federal Way, WA

redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 Frozen Planet (Series). 3 DVDs. approx. 6 hours. Prod. by BBC Worldwide. Dist. by Warner Home Video. 2012. ISBN 0-7806-8518-0. $39.98.
Gr 7 Up–This seven-part series, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, features stunning scenery, magnificent animals, superb musical background, and striking camera work. One-third of our planet is frozen and it is the last true frontier. Cameras travel to both poles, to Greenland, and to lands of the far north in Canada and Russia to film conditions in all four seasons. Changing weather and temperatures affect the lives of polar bears, penguins, whales, seals, wolves, birds, musk ox, bison, owls, voles, moths, and ermine—all portrayed here. Most often it is prey versus predator and survival of the fittest. These bloody encounters are discerningly presented and will not upset young audiences—yet the message is clear. The conclusion of each program features “Freeze Frame,” a segment that describes the making of the feature. “The Last Frontier” program examines the indigenous people of the Arctic regions in Greenland and Siberia with a look at their lifestyles and how they adapt to the cold, snow, and ice. While Antarctica has no native peoples, hundreds of scientists live on and study the continent for months at a time. There is a look into their labs and discussion of their research projects. The final program, “On Thin Ice,” addresses climate change but does not ask what causes it and what we can do to prevent it. This dazzling series can be utilized by classes across the curriculum.–Patricia Ann Owens, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Mt. Carmel

redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 The Diamond Queen. DVD. approx. 3 hrs. Prod. by BBC. Dist. by Warner Home Video. 2012. ISBN 978-0-7806-9601-8. $19.98
Gr 9 Up–In 2012, London hosted not only the Olympics but also the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne of the United Kingdom. This absolutely astonishing retrospective of those years, hosted by BBC News personality Andrew Marr, examines the Queen in her roles both as royalty and family matriarch. BBC had unprecedented access to archival materials as well as a wide variety of historians, journalists, political figures, regular citizens, and many of the Monarch’s closest relatives for 18 months to collect information on defining moments in her reign and her private family relationships. The manner in which Queen Elizabeth has overseen incredible changes in the Commonwealth from the time she suddenly became sovereign as a young mother through the sometimes turbulent economic, social, and political transformations of the last 60 years is emphasized. The film also follows her engagements around the world for more than a year and a half. While most of the interviewees’ comments are overwhelmingly complimentary, tough times such as international disputes and her family’s difficult relationship circumstances are not glossed over. History buffs will be ecstatic over the program’s wealth of vintage film dating back to the only other Diamond Jubilee—that of Queen Victoria in 1897. The video is organized into three episodes with five separately accessible segments within each. An English-language subtitle option and a commemorative archive montage of photographs complete the program which deserves serious consideration for every media collection.–Dwain Thomas, formerly Lake Park High School, Roselle, IL

redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 Anansi Story Favorites. CD. 43:55. Kunama Mtendaji. 2012. ISBN unavail. $10.
PreS-Gr 5–Over the ages, storytellers across the globe have told stories about Anansi the spider and his antics. Anansi is known for his tricks as well as his greed and laziness. In this CD, Kunama Mtendaji uses musical accompaniment, singing, and different voices to retell some Anansi stories, such as “How Anansi Got a Narrow Waist,” “Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock,” and “Anansi and His Six Sons.” Kunama is a masterful storyteller, and he gives each character a unique voice and personality. His narration is enthusiastic, and his pacing captures the heart and mood of each tale. His opening “Reading Bug Groove” song is catchy and fun. He sings parts of the stories and his use of drums, a marimba, a flute, and shekere (gourd shakers) add a unique dimension to the telling. A must-have for library collections.–Kira Moody, Whitmore Public Library, Salt Lake City, UT

redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 Mr. Hynde Is Out of His Mind: My Weird School, Book 6. By Dan Gutman. cassette or CD. 45 min. Recorded Books. 2012. cassette: ISBN 978-1-4498-6426-2, CD: ISBN 978-1-4498-6427-9. $15.75.
Gr 1-3–In the funniest book (HarperCollins, 2005) yet in Dan Gutman’s series, second grade king of hyperbole, A. J., complains that he hates school, dislikes reading, and particularly despises Andrea Young, a geeky brown-noser, and her crybaby sidekick, Emily. Good news arrives when their music teacher, “boring, snoring Mr. Loring,” is replaced by an unlikely successor: rapper and jam master, Mr. Hynde. The “one- man funky groove machine” appears in a purple cloud of smoke with a sequined cloak, movie-star shades, baseball cap, and a penchant for break dancing. No more old school, as Mr. Hynde promises “I’m here to rock your world, so get down and get your swerve on!” Jared Goldsmith gets A. J.’s voice just right and kicks into high gear with his hilarious hip-hop/ghetto slang take on Mr. Hynde. It’s non-stop laughter as he exhorts the class to get out of their seats and bust a move. During TV Turn-Off Month, or “the end of the world as we know it,” Mr. Hynde teaches an unorthodox percussion lesson and writes a hip-hop Beauty and the Beast musical play to engage his charges. There’s even a surprise ending, so reluctant readers and their jaded teachers will equally enjoy this delightful audiobook.–Lonna Pierce, MacArthur Elementary School, Binghamton, NY

redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 My Name Is Not Easy. By Debby Dahl Edwardson. 6 CDs. 6:30 hrs. Brilliance Audio. 2012. ISBN 978-1-4558-7955-7. $64.97.
Gr 7 Up–In the early 1960s, children from Iñupiaq, Athabaskan, and Caucasian backgrounds are enrolled at a Catholic boarding school in Alaska in Debby Dahl Edwardson’s National Book Award finalist (Marshall Cavendish, 2011). Luke (white people can’t pronounce his Iñupiaq name) and his brothers Bunna and Isaac are flown to Catholic sponsored Sacred Heart School far from their village. Six-year-old Isaac is too young to be enrolled in the school, so he’s put into foster care without his family’s consent. Thus begins the brothers’ struggles central to this compelling story. Racial tensions between Eskimo (sic), Indian, and white students percolate at the school, which advocates assimilation. The brothers as well as students Amiq, Chickie, and Junior describe their efforts to adjust, convincingly voiced by Nick Podehl and Amy Rubinate. Meanwhile, the world outside is tumultuous. President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, nuclear testing along the Alaskan coast, radioactive exposure, aboriginal hunting rights being invalidated, and forced adoption swirl like a cold Alaskan wind. The cadence of the dialogue is accurate, and some profanity is used. Edwardson presents profound historical events but artfully refrains from moralizing. An excellent look at an important part of history that is usually not covered in conventional high school history sources.–Robin Levin, Fort Washakie School/Community Library, WY

redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 Same Sun Here. By Silas House and Neela Vaswani. 5 CDs. 5:49 hrs. Brilliance Audio. 2012. ISBN 978-1-4558-2231-7. $49.7.
Gr 4-7–Meena, a recent immigrant from India, lives in Manhattan’s Chinatown with her family. Through a program arranged by their schools, she becomes a pen pal with River, who lives in rural Kentucky and is the son of a coal miner. They exchange letters via snail mail and, as a result, learn about each other and themselves. Sharing day-to-day activities, secrets, opinions, and questions, Meena and River start to break down barriers and talk about their lives. Their letters reveal their many similarities and differences. They both have a close relationship with their grandmothers, love dogs, and their fathers work far away in order to provide for their families. They maintain their correspondence as they go through some difficult moments in their lives such as when Meena faces the death of her grandmother in India and when River’s town faces environmental concerns related to coal mining. The novel (Candlewick, 2012) is perfectly narrated by authors Silas House (River) and Neela Vaswani (Meena), further invigorating the story with their Southern and Indian accents. This tale about debunking cultural stereotypes, friendship, and finding common ground will resonate with listeners.–Katie Llera, Sayreville Middle School, NJ

redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 Wonder. By R. J. Palacio. 7 CDs. 8:12 hrs. Brilliance Audio. 2012. ISBN 978-1-4558-4420-3. $64.97.
Gr 4-7–August (Auggie) Pullman considers himself just a normal ten-year-old kid. But to everyone else, he is definitely different, the tragic victim of a one-in-a-billion birth defect. After years of homeschooling, he will be attending fifth grade in a pubic school and he thinks he knows what to expect, and he’s terrified.  Auggie he refuses to let his facial deformity garner sympathy. The boy discovers that other people can surprise you, and that everyone is capable of defying expectations, including himself. The superb narration by Nick Podehl, Kate Rudd, and most especially, Diana Steele as Auggie, takes Palacio’s poignant writing (Knopf, 2012) to the next level. The story is shared between Auggie and the family members and friends who surround him. Each voice adds another layer to what is, at heart, a simple tale about kindness. Listeners will discover both the humor and the heartache of being different, and how one person can truly touch many lives.– Michaela Schied, Indian River Middle School, Philadelphia, NY

redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 Blues in All Flavors. CD. 42 min. with booklet. Prod. by Hot Toddy Music. Dist. by NewSound Kids. 2012. ISBN unavail. $14.98.
PreS-Gr 4–Blues singer Gaye Adegbalola presents an amazing collection of 13 songs on her first CD for children. Each of the songs is sung in a musical style and flavor of the blues, including jump blues with boogie-woogie, doo-wop, Chicago blues with stop time, and reggae rhythm. The songs’ topics range from getting outside in the sunshine and dancing to saying please, recycling, bullying, and the importance of kindness. The lively tunes combined with Adegbalola’s rich, soulful voice will have listeners singing along, moving, and dancing. The accompanying booklet includes the lyrics as well as a learning activity for each song, such as discussion questions, instructions for making a family tree, movement suggestions, and more. This delightful, entertaining album deserves a place in every collection.–Veronica De Fazio, Plainfield Public Library District, IL

redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 My Hands Sing the Blues: Romare Bearden’s Childhood Journey. By Jeanne Walker Harvey. cassette or CD. 15 min. Recorded Books. 2012. cassette: ISBN 978-1-4640-0209-0, CD: ISBN 978-1-4640-0206-9. $15.75; hardcover book, ISBN 978-0-7614-5810-4: $17.99.
K-Gr 3–In a first-person narrative that incorporates some of artist Romare Bearden’s phrases and ideas, and using his famous painting “Watching the Good Trains Go By” as her inspiration, Jeanne Walker Harvey gives voice to the history and experiences that inspired his famous collages. Born in North Carolina, Bearden and his family moved to Harlem in 1914 to escape discriminatory Jim Crow Laws and attitudes. In his collages, which he called paintings and “visual jazz,” he analyzed the social and political issues of his time and also related his personal story as well as the daily life of African Americans in both the North and South. Kevin R. Free reads Harvey’s fictionalized account (Marshall Cavendish, 2011) of the artist’s life with a cadence that turns the rhyming lines into a blues song, its rhythm rising and falling and bouncing along, sometimes singing the train whistles and engines like a jazz tune. The audio version perfectly accompanies Elizabeth Zunon’s Bearden-like collage illustrations and text that changes size and color for emphasis. The author’s note, which details the life and describes the work of Bearden, is included, but source notes from the book are not. While this fictionalized biography provides an excellent introduction to the Great Migration North and the Harlem Renaissance, it is also a work of art in words and pictures.–MaryAnn Karre, Horace Mann and Thomas Jefferson Elementary Schools, Binghamton, NY

redstar Multimedia Reviews: August 2012 The Other Side. DVD. 8 min. Weston Woods. 2012. ISBN 978-0-545-44754-6. $59.95; CD, ISBN 978-0-545-44759-1: $12.95; CD with hardcover book, ISBN 978-0-545-44811-6: $29.95.
K-Gr 4–Clover, an African-American girl, lives on one side of the fence. Annie, a white girl, lives on the other side. Set during segregation, this story shows how the fence divides them. Yet, each is intrigued by the other and both are drawn to test those artificial boundaries that separate and classify. Jacqueline Woodson’s deceptively simple, yet powerfully evocative story (Putnam, 2001) still has the ability to move an audience. It is supported by E. B. Lewis’s wonderful watercolor illustrations that are filled with hope and light. Viewers get the opportunity to enjoy their heart-touching details as the illustrations are scanned iconographically. The story is narrated in a young voice by Toshi Widoff-Woodson, with light original music by Toshi Reagon. In a five-minute interview, Woodson explains how she became an author and provides thoughtful insights into the issues the story addresses. This beautiful production merits a place in all libraries serving children.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary, Federal Way, WA
