CECIL, Randy. Horsefly and Honeybee. illus. by author. 32p. CIP. Holt. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-8050-9300-1. LC 2011029044.
PreS-Gr 1–When two sleepy bugs, looking for a comfortable napping spot, confront each other inside a daylily, they have an altercation. Unfortunately, they each lose a wing during their squabble and have to resort to using their feet for traveling. The two meet up once again when they’re both snatched by a bullfrog and set aside for his dinner. Fortunately, just at the moment the frog is ready to eat them, the two insects clutch onto each other and work together to make their escape. The mostly grass-green and pond- and sky-blue illustrations vary from full spreads to small vignettes and deftly depict the characters’ humorous facial expressions. The googly-eyed creatures and their utterance of “Drat!” at just the right moment create a very funny story and a great read-aloud that children and their adults will love.– Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI
FREEMAN, Tor. Olive and the Big Secret. illus. by author. 32p. Candlewick/Templar. Aug. 2012. Tr $15.99. ISBN 978-0-7636-6149-6.
PreS-Gr 2–Even before the title page, readers see little hearts flowing out of Molly’s floppy ears with an onomatopoetic “sigh.” The author gives away the secret, but leaves readers with a question. Who does the rabbilike? She whispers the name in Olive’s ear, and the cat affirms wide-eyed, “I will never tell.” The page layouts are without frames, but grounded horizontally on soft shadows or beautifully rendered on muted backgrounds, allowing the action to run like a relay race through the pages. The secret gets passed from cat to giraffe to badger to turtle, and so on, and readers can chuckle and waggle their fingers witnessing this blatant divulging, astutely expressed with only handfuls of words. Young children will be riveted by this masterfully paced, puppy-love drama, played out with an array of quirky animals in contemporary comic style. The measure of individuality is each character’s ability to keep a secret. There is the gossipmonger, the one who does not care, the one who tries to keep a secret, and the one who doesn’t. The graphics are bold and childlike, and the font size is large. When it is clear that someone blabbed, Molly goes straight to the source and confronts Olive, who is remorseful, at least for a moment. A delightful, surefire conversation starter on the do’s and don’ts of secrets among friends.–Sara Lissa Paulson, American Sign Language and English Lower School, NY
HILLS, Tad. Rocket Writes a Story. illus. by author. 40p. Random/Schwartz and Wade. July 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-375-87086-6; PLB $20.99. ISBN 978-0-375-97086-3.
PreS-Gr 2–The endearing dog who first encountered the joy of words in How Rocket Learned to Read (Random, 2010) wonders what he can do with all the words he’s been collecting. “I’m going to write a story!” he announces to his friends, his teacher–a small yellow bird–and the world at large. But a story, he finds, is made of more than just words. With useful questions, positive feedback, and encouragement, Rocket’s teacher keeps him interested in the journey that turns his words into something special. And he finds, as many writers do, that his topic (an owl) becomes his friend. Hills varies his perspectives and page formats so successfully that the book’s repetitive color scheme never gets tiresome. Children will love deciphering the illustrated words that cover Rocket’s teaching tree. Listeners, readers, and aspiring writers will appreciate the excellent description of the many ways that stories unfold.–Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY
KRISHNASWAMI, Uma. Out of the Way! Out of the Way! illus. by Uma Krishnaswamy. 28p. Groundwood. 2012. Tr $17.95. ISBN 978-1-55498-130-4.
K-Gr 3–A boy finds a sapling on the dirt path that runs through his village in what appears to be India and protects it with a ring of stones. As the tree grows, villagers reroute the path around it, while bikers and oxcart and motor scooter drivers cry, “Out of the way! Out of the way!” The tree continues to grow, providing a home for animals and a meeting place for people beneath its branches. A city grows beyond the village, the dirt path becomes a paved road for cars and trucks, the boy becomes a man with his own children. Through the years, people learn to carry on their activities “out of the way” of the tree rather than sacrificing it to make way for themselves. They even take time, occasionally, from rushing “from here to there and back again” to sit under it and listen to the old stories. Krishnaswamy’s charming folk-art illustrations, executed in mixed media, combine black-and-white drawings with blocks of color. Alert readers will notice that many of the orange outline drawings on the endpapers are echoed throughout the book, in color or in pen and ink. The road cuts through every page, either in a continuous stretch or as winding patches carrying people’s footprints as they circumvent the tree. There is much to see and enjoy in the small paintings and drawings that make up each scene. This delightful story illustrates how tradition and modern progress can coexist in a way that benefits everyone.–Marianne Saccardi, formerly at Norwalk Community College, CT
BATEMAN, Donna M. Out on the Prairie. illus. by Susan Swan. 32p. CIP. Charlesbridge. July 2012. RTE $15.95. ISBN 978-1-58089-377-0; pap. $7.95. ISBN 978-1-58089-378-7; ebook $9.99. ISBN 978-1-60734-456-8. LC 2011025782.
PreS-Gr 2 –Using the traditional rhyme scheme of “Over in the Meadow,” this book does its predecessor proud, and then some. Children will encounter possibly unfamiliar flora and fauna (yucca and grama grasses, howdy owls and pronghorns) in this beautiful exploration of a prairie. “Out on the prairie where the wispy clouds soar,/Lived a mother prairie dog and her little pups Four.” A different native animal is showcased in each lavish spread. Swan’s illustrations are unique and quite astounding; made using collages of digitally scanned objects, found objects, and hand-painted papers, they are vibrant and have an almost 3-D quality to them. The grasshoppers seem to be jumping off the pages to spectacular effect. Back matter includes an extensive section, “Prairie Flora and Fauna Facts.” This book would be a great choice for any prairie ecosystem lesson, and it would make a sweet habitat storytime paired with Christopher Gunson’s Over on the Farm (Scholastic, 1997) and Marianne Berkes’s Over in the Ocean (Dawn, 2004).–Alison Donnelly, Mississippi Valley Library District, Collinsville, IL
CERULLO, Mary M. City Fish, Country Fish. photos by Jeffrey L. Rotman. 32p. CIP. further reading. glossary. maps. Tilbury. 2012. Tr $16.95. ISBN 978-0-88448-323-6. LC 2011026591.
Gr 3-6–Cerullo contrasts the lives of fish in tropical waters with those of their relatives in colder ocean regions. She explores differences in coloration, feeding habits, body shape, and survival techniques between the “city fish” that inhabit coral reefs and “swim in water as warm as a swimming pool” and the “country fish” that swim through large underwater territories and cool waters. She also explains characteristics that all fish share and discusses how humans study the ocean. A final spread details the need to protect this important resource. Rotman’s outstanding photos illuminate the underwater world with close-up views of tiny reef dwellers and unusual cold-water inhabitants such as the goosefish. Wider shots reveal the colorful bustle of reef life and schools of cold-water fish, including bluefin tuna. Design and layout reinforce the contrasts Cerullo identifies, making this a first-rate choice for browsers as well as students interested in ocean life.–Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato
RAY, Deborah Kogan. Paiute Princess. illus. by author. 48p. bibliog. chron. CIP. further reading. maps. photos. reprods. websites. Farrar/Frances Foster. 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-374-39897-2.
Gr 3-6–Ray??s powerful picture-book biography vividly depicts the life of a Native American woman whose efforts to seek justice for the Paiute tribe deserve greater attention. Born in 1844 in present-day Nevada, Winnemucca found that her tribe’s traditional way of life was in danger of disappearing under the onslaught of settlers, miners, railroad workers, and ranchers descending upon the American West. Organized chronologically, the book depicts her journey as she became “a child of two worlds”: she had a rare opportunity to experience and appreciate white culture and to learn English, but continued to cherish her heritage and resisted the brutality and oppression visited upon her tribe by the burgeoning reservation system. Winnemucca’s unusual upbringing contributed to her varied achievements as an adult. Ray covers her accomplishments as a performer, interpreter and scout for the U.S. Army, educator, and spokesperson and activist, highlighting particularly dramatic moments with expressive, poignant illustrations. Well-chosen quotations from Winnemucca’s autobiography, the first written by a Native American woman in English, allow her own voice to drive the narrative and bring “Princess Sarah” to life. Detailed back matter makes it clear that Ray chose to end the book on a hopeful note that may be most appropriate for the intended audience, but does not portray the despair Winnemucca felt at the end of her life. An essential purchase, providing a new perspective on westward expansion and insight into the life of an inspiring but little-known civil rights crusader.– Kate Hewitt, Far Brook School, Short Hills, NJ
