ANDERSON, Jodi Lynn. Tiger Lily. 292p. HarperCollins/HarperTeen. July 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-06-200325-6; ebook $9.99. ISBN 978-0-06-211461-7.
Gr 8-11–Tiger Lily is the adopted daughter of Tik Tok, shaman of the Sky Eater tribe of Neverland. As such, she should be a revered member of her community. Instead she is teased and harassed by other children–until one of her tormentors mysteriously dies. After that Tiger Lily is still an outsider, still looked down on, but she is also feared. She grows up wild and alone, running through Neverland’s forests, becoming a skilled hunter and tracker. Her only companions are other village misfits, Pine Sap and Moon Eye, and a tiny faerie. Then one day she goes against her village’s orders and saves an Englander shipwrecked on Neverland’s shores. How was she to know her good deed would lead to heartache, sorrow, and the greatest betrayal she would ever face? Neverland is a dark place in this faerie-narrated tale of Peter Pan’s first love. Teens familiar only with Disney’s version of the story may find this novel perplexing, but its many layers create a place of dangerous wonder. Tiger Lily has been reinvented with a complex backstory, giving her a credible source of deep strength and dark emotion. Believable secondary characters have also been carefully crafted and developed, and mature themes run throughout, adding realism and edginess to this fantasy. Anderson has done for Peter Pan what Frank Beddor’s The Looking Glass Wars (Dial, 2006) did for Alice in Wonderland, and older teens will appreciate her addition to the Neverland mythology.–Heather E. Miller, Homewood Public Library, AL
KINCAID, S. J. Insignia. 444p. HarperCollins/Katherine Tegen Bks. July 2012. Tr $17.99. ISBN 978-0-06-209299-1; ebook $9.99. ISBN 978-0-06-209301-1.
Gr 7 Up–Tom Raines, 14, moves from casino to casino with his gambler father, generally paying for their lodgings from his winnings at virtual reality games. When he passes a surprise VR scenario, he is recruited by General Marsh to join the Intrasolar Forces. Teens from the IF are backed by multinationals to fight for the Indo-American Alliance by remotely piloting spacecraft in battles around the solar system. He jumps at the chance to do something with his life and is whisked off to the Pentagonal Spire. There he learns that he must have a computer implanted in his brain to be able to fulfill his responsibilities. He also learns that his mother’s hated boyfriend, Dalton Prestwick, is an important and ruthless figure among the corporate sponsors. Meanwhile, a new Combatant, call sign “Medusa,” has joined the Russo-Chinese Alliance and is reaping victory after victory. Tom finds himself strangely intrigued by Medusa and violates protocols to seek her out over the Internet. He eventually discovers that he has an ability above and beyond his comrades to interface directly with machines around the Earth and beyond. It is only with this ability and the help of his friends that Tom is able to escape Prestwick’s reprogramming, find the mole in the Spire, and defeat Medusa. Kincaid combines a Harry Potter-like teen discovering that he has unknown abilities being sent to a special boarding school with the Ender’s Game plotline of humanity’s space battles being fought remotely by juveniles. She adds espionage and corporate skullduggery along with multiple mysterious enemies to create a blockbuster of a debut.– Eric Norton, McMillan Memorial Library, Wisconsin Rapids, WI
MATSON, Morgan. Second Chance Summer. 468p. CIP. S & S. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-1-4169-9067-3; ebook $9.99. ISBN 978-1-4391-5752-7. LC 2011052241.
Gr 8 Up–This will be a bittersweet summer for 17-year-old Taylor Edwards, whose family has retreated to their beloved cabin in the Poconos for a few final months of togetherness as Taylor’s father slowly succumbs to stage-four cancer. Her older brother, Warren, a socially inept genius, and younger sister, Gelsey, a budding ballet star, feel at home in the friendly summer community, though they haven’t been there for the last few years. The book occasionally inserts the pre-teen Taylor’s memories of delightful times with former BFF Lucy, flashing a secret code to each other across the lake from their respective docks and hanging out with Henry, Taylor’s first boyfriend. In the present day, things are different. Taylor and Lucy had a falling out five years ago, and haven’t spoken since, and Henry has matured into a hottie. Most readers will deduce the event–which is frequently alluded to and revealed late in the story–that destroyed the girls’ friendship. The characters are true to life, and Matson acknowledges the maturing physical attraction between Taylor and Henry as they spend sleepless nights on the dock, looking at stars. Matson has blended romance, humor, teen angst, boring summer jobs, and a truly tragic event into a wonderfully readable story, told in a manner that trusts teens’ intelligence. Jenny Han’s and Sarah Dessen’s fans will gobble this up.– Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley School, Fort Worth, TX
WEIN, Elizabeth. Code Name Verity. 344p. bibliog. CIP. Hyperion/Disney. 2012. RTE $16.99. ISBN 978-1-4231-5219-4; ebook $16.99. ISBN 978-1-4231-5325-2. LC 2011024857.
Gr 9 Up–What is truth? The significance of Julia Beaufort-Stuart’s alias, “Code Name Verity,” takes on double meaning in this taut, riveting, thriller. When the story begins, Julia is an unnamed prisoner, formerly a wireless operator for the British, held captive in France by a seemingly sadistic Nazi interrogator. She has supposedly “sold her soul” in exchange for small bits of freedom, giving pieces of code in exchange for her life. Interspersed with the story of her fierce fight for survival is a different tale: that of how she came to be in France and of her friendship with Maddie Brodatt, a British civilian pilot. Their unlikely friendship–Julia is a noblewoman, Maddie a commoner–forms the backbone of the novel, and Wein seamlessly weaves its threads throughout the book, tying them like the knots of a rope. As Julia tells their story, she also reveals small bits of her attempts at survival and escape. In the second half of the book, Maddie narrates, telling of her desperate attempts to rescue her friend and revealing both the truth of what happened to each of them, and the truth of Julia’s bravery. This intricate tale is not for the faint of heart, and readers will be left gasping for the finish, desperate to know how it ends. With a seemingly unreliable narrator, strong friendship, wonderful historical details, and writing that fairly crackles on the page, this is an excellent book for thoughtful readers and book-discussion groups.–Necia Blundy, Marlborough Public Library, MA
BURNS, Loree Griffin. Citizen Scien tists: Be a Part of Scientific Discovery from Your Own Backyard. 80p. bibliog. further reading. glossary. index. websites. CIP. Holt. 2012. RTE $19.99. ISBN 978-0-8050-9062-8; pap. $12.99. ISBN 978-0-8050-9517-3. LC 2011021673.
Gr 4-6–An engaging book of seasonal projects for nature lovers (and their parents and teachers as well). Burns explains in her informally sociable text, “Citizen science is the study of our world by the people who live in it.” Beginning with fall, she delves into migratory monarchs, instructing youngsters how to catch, tag, and release these long-distance flitters, and goes on to provide a history and a geography of monarch migration patterns. She introduces two young “Monarch Watchers” (ages seven and six), presents a list of necessary equipment, and offers a quick quiz (answers at the back of the book). She repeats this format for winter (joining in the Christmas Bird Count); spring “frogging” at night (identifying mating calls); and summer (“ladybugging”). Resource sections containing a list of books, field guides, and websites are included for each critter, along with pointers for finding more. Burns is careful to emphasize “gentleness” in catching, tagging, photographing, and releasing specimens. Crisp color photos flow through the pages, many showing kids of various ages hot on the trail of frog sounds or birdcalls. Interested readers will enjoy many of the suggested titles, and a side trip into such elegant offerings as Pamela Turner’s The Frog Scientist (2009) or Sy Montgomery’s The Tarantula Scientist (2004, both Houghton Harcourt) might show them how far these early explorations might lead. Handsome and challenging.–Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY
LINDQUIST, Heather C. Children of Manzanar. 148p. bibliog. glossary. CIP. Heyday Books. 2012. pap. $17.95. ISBN 978-1-59714-160-4. LC 2011046404.
Gr 5-8–After the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, President Roosevelt authorized the incarceration of thousands of Japanese Americans. This extraordinary collection of photographs and personal recollections documents the experiences of children and teens at one of those relocation camps. Offering an intimate look at various facets of camp life, this account addresses the breakdown of the family unit; games and pastimes; schooling; major life events such as weddings, births, and funerals; and the Manzanar Children’s Village, which housed orphans. Concise introductions to each section provide historical context, while most of the text is composed of quotes from those who lived in Manzanar as youths, telling their stories in their own words. Much of this material comes from the Manzanar National Historic Site’s archives and oral-history collection, remarkably appearing in print for the first time. These brief memoirs are thoughtfully arranged alongside pictures, including images from renowned photographers Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange, that offer a poignant view of young people making the best of a life in imprisonment. A touching epilogue introduces ongoing efforts to preserve Manzanar’s history, and a thought-provoking appendix examines the complexities of the changing terminology used to describe the incarceration (e.g., “Relocation Center” versus “concentration camp”). This volume will strike a chord with readers who can relate to the stories of people their own age struggling to thrive in dire circumstances.–Allison Tran, Misson Viejo Library, CA
MURPHY, Jim & Alison Blank. Invincible Microbe: Tuberculosis and the Never-Ending Search for a Cure. 144p. bibliog. index. maps. notes. photos. reprods. Clarion. July 2012. Tr $18.99. ISBN 978-0-618-53574-3; ebook $18.99. ISBN 978-0-547-82268-6.
Gr 5-9–Starting with the dramatic cover photo of a row of girls lying in their hospital beds, Murphy and Blank unwind the tangled history of tuberculosis, a disease that continues to kill millions every year. The writing is crisp and clinical. Readers will be surprised to learn that kings believed that a single touch of their hand would cure the peasants and that one of the more radical treatments for TB included removing multiple ribs from a patient’s chest. At times gruesome and somewhat somnolent when describing the peaceful sanatoriums, the book clearly details all the many unsuccessful attempts to cure this infectious disease. The authors also describe how close modern medicine has come to eradicating it. Students researching diseases or medical breakthroughs will find this book both informative and interesting. Helpful, too, are the pronunciation tips that are included when the authors discuss the complicated names of the bacteria and illnesses. The book is liberally illustrated with photos, drawings, and prints that vividly complement the text. The selected bibliography and source notes serve also as excellent examples of useful citations.–Denise Schmidt, San Francisco Public Library
RUSCH, Elizabeth. The Mighty Mars Rovers: The Incredible Adventures of Spirit and Opportunity. 80p. (Scientists in the Field Series). bibliog. further reading. glossary. index. photos. websites. CIP. Houghton Harcourt. 2012. RTE $18.99. ISBN 978-0-547-47881-4. LC 2011012159.
Gr 7-9–Rusch covers not only the scientific aspects of Mars exploration but also the personalities of the people who made it happen, and profiles the rovers themselves, Spirit and Opportunity. Her comprehensive research shines through in her detailed style as she zeroes in on the behind-the-scenes efforts of launching a scientific mission. Full-color photographs on every page in this picture-book-size volume illuminate the Mars surface and the faces of the scientists as they agonize over communication difficulties and computer glitches and exult over the thrill of discovery. The lists of websites, archives, multimedia, and sources may inspire readers to follow in the footsteps of Steve Squyres–mission leader. The glossary is brief but helpful in unscrambling some of the “alphabet soup” of acronyms and nicknames (e.g., ATLO–Assembly, Test and Launch Operations and Pancam–Panoramic Camera) as well as scientific terms (e.g., Sol–one Martian day, or 24 hours, 39 minutes, and 35 seconds in Earth time) used throughout. Terms and photographs are indexed. This detailed look at planning, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting a highly complex scientific mission puts a human face on an incredible accomplishment.– Frances E. Millhouser, formerly at Chantilly Regional Library, Fairfax County, VA
RUTHERFORD, Clarice. A Dog Is a Dog: And That’s Why He’s So Special. illus. by NJ Wiley. 98p. bibliog. further reading. glossary. notes. photos. Alpine. 2012. pap. $14.95. ISBN 978-1-57779-103-4.
Gr 4-8–This is a unique and engaging exploration of the world of dogs. The book begins with their evolution, their “wolfness,” and the origins of different breeds. It provides insights into their instincts and senses, which can help humans to better understand canine behavior. The importance of socialization is clearly explained. What their gestures, such as lip-licking and yawning, are saying is identified, enabling readers to interpret them to improve their communication with their four-legged companions. There are also chapters on teaching good manners and playing fun games. The writing style is enthusiastic and highly readable. Many attractive and appropriate color photos and black-and-white drawings are included. Family dogs would certainly put this book on a recommended reading list to ensure that their people become wiser and better “pack leaders” in their daily lives.– Carol Schene, formerly at Taunton Public Schools, MA
