star Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4, May 2012 DEMPSEY, Kristy. Surfer Chick.illus. by author. 32p. Abrams. May 2012. RTE $16.95. ISBN 978-1-4197-0188-7.
PreS-Gr 3–A humorous story of a surfer chick coming into her own. Her dad rules the Roost Surf Shop and has radical skills, and now he’s agreed to show the chick his best moves. After she wipes out, she must get the courage to try again. This is a sweet, spunky story about perseverance and gaining confidence. Acrylic paint and colored pencil with a hot press watercolor make the sunsets dynamic and bright. The lively art has a cartoon feel; the waves seem iridescent and jump off the pages. Fans of animation will like this style. The playful rhyming text incorporates plenty of surfer slang like “radical,” “bummer,” and “gnarly.” Not only does this youngster learn to surf, but she also invents some moves of her own. Totally awesome!–Jess deCourcy Hinds, Bard H.S. Early College, Queens, NY

star Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4, May 2012 DiCamillo, Kate & Alison McGhee. Two for One.illus. by Tony Fucile. 80p. (Bink and Gollie Series). Candlewick. June 2012. Tr $15.99. ISBN 978-0-7636-3361-5.
Gr 1-3–Best friends Bink and Gollie are complete opposites in terms of appearance; Bink is short and squat with an explosion of yellow hair and rumpled clothes, and Gollie is tall and slender with a smooth bob and a chic outfit. They are kindred spirits, though, and readers will delight in sharing in their adventures at the state fair. First, Bink tries mightily (yet unsuccessfully) to win one of the games, then Gollie decides to enter a talent competition but is gripped by a bout of stage fright. Finally, both girls have their fortunes told by Madame Prunely, and they realize that the future doesn’t matter too much as long as they’re together. The common thread linking all of the stories is the girls’ respect and compassion for each other, and the realization that having a good buddy makes life’s little vexations more tolerable. Short, compact sentences make this book an ideal selection for beginning readers. There are some challenging vocabulary words, but readers should be able to glean much of the story from the fantastic illustrations. Fucile employs an economical use of sketchy lines and splashes of color to capture facial expressions and emotions with spot-on accuracy. His artwork goes a long way in making this title the funny, touching book that it is. It would be no surprise if Bink and Gollie were to join the likes of Elephant and Piggie and Frog and Toad in the ranks of favorite friend duos. Hilarious, warm, and, in a word, outstanding.Amy Holland, Irondequoit Public Library, NY

star Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4, May 2012 FEIFFER, Kate. No Go Sleep! illus. by Jules Feiffer. 32p. CIP. S & S/Paula Wiseman Bks. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-1683-3. LC 2010033776.
PreS-K–In this charming picture book, a baby speaks only a few words. But babies don’t have to say much to have the world revolve around them. The parents’ gentle nudges toward bedtime fall flat, so the sun steps in, saying, “I’ve gone for the day. When you wake up, I’ll be back to play.” Baby, still wide-eyed and frenetic, then hears from the moon, stars, a car, birds, frogs, bunnies, an owl, a tree, sheep, and various creatures and things inside the house, each closer and closer to the crib and its fretful occupant. Jules Feiffer’s wonderful, mildly zany informality warms every image, and he super-soaks the pages in deliciously intense watercolors. Some of the text is lilting, some quirky; unlike Goodnight Moon, for instance, this isn’t a lullaby in disguise. Will the book ease a child to sleep? Maybe, maybe not. What it will do is distract and entertain–and maybe even cheer up the weary adults who find themselves in a similar situation.–Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY

star Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4, May 2012 GOING, K. L. Dog in Charge.illus. by Dan Santat.40p. Dial. May 2012. RTE $16.99. ISBN 978-0-8037-3479-1.
PreS-Gr 2–Printz-winner Going aces her picture-book debut with this comical saga of a tutu-wearing bulldog who is the designated cat-sitter while the humans are at the store. Once the car leaves the driveway, five cats of varying breeds skedaddle from the sofa to spill milk, stir up fireplace ash, empty the hamper, disrupt a vanity, and more. Dog worries that their raucous acting out will reflect badly on him: “Would he still be a good Dog, a smart Dog, the very best Dog?” His idea to entice good behavior with kibbles disappears with his own hunger. As he naps, the cats remember that they love Dog and bring the house back to perfect order as the family arrives. Dog gets his rewards, then observes the pile of sleeping felines and thinks, “Good cats…Smart cats. The very best cats.” Going’s sentence structure reflects the hero’s thought patterns and her sound effects (“Fwomp!”) escalate the humor. Santat’s realistic cartoons feature priceless expressions and poses. This is a treat for all pet lovers.–Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA

star Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4, May 2012 MCCARTY, Peter. Chloe.illus. by author.40p. HarperCollins/Balzer & Bray. May 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-06-1142-91-8; PLB $17.89. ISBN 978-0-06-1142-92-5.
K-Gr 2–Chloe is the middle child in her large rabbit family. Of the Bunnies’ many shared activities, her favorite is after-dinner family fun time; however, when Dad brings home a television, she is sure that the fun has gone out of their shared time together. Her disappointment is short-lived. She and Baby Bridget soon find their own entertainment–the TV box and bubble wrap. Before long, the box becomes the best show with all the Bunny kids clamoring to get inside. After the youngsters are herded up to bed, even Dad can’t resist popping a few bubbles. Soft, natural colors highlight the family resemblance while bright pastels accent each rabbit’s individuality. Bunnies fill the pages, but an absence of background clutter keeps the illustrations simple and engaging. The gentle, child-friendly artwork complements the story told with minimal text. The result is a calming bedtime story for family sharing.–Carolyn Janssen, Public Lib. of Cincinnati & Hamilton County, OH

star Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4, May 2012 MURRAY, Alison. One Two That’s My Shoe! illus. by author. 32p. CIP. Hyperion/Disney. June 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-1-4231-4329-1. LC 2011013171.
PreS-K–The little girl and her dog from Apple Pie ABC (Hyperion, 2011) are back. Here, the frisky pup steals the child’s red shoe. She chases after him, “One…Two…/Three…Four/Out the door!” and “Through the gate” until he’s pulled up short by 10 marching hens. Each number is spelled out and represented numerically and pictorially. The bright graphic-style illustrations have a retro feel and greatly enhance the storytelling. This fanciful counting book is perfect for one-on-one or group sharing and a must-buy for most collections, especially those that have the companion ABC.–Kathy Buchsbaum, Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library, NY

star Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4, May 2012 COOMBS, Kate. Water Sings Blue. illus. by Meilo So. 36p. CIP. Chronicle. 2012. Tr $16.99. ISBN 978-0-8118-7284-3. LC 2010030163.
PreS-Gr 4–A jaunty “Song of the Boat” opens this evocative collection designed to capture the life and spirit of the sea. The 23 pieces showcase a range of poetic forms while looking at each subject from a unique and interesting perspective. Readers do a little shopping in a tide pool, check out the local real estate with Frank Hermit, and experience the drama of a sea urchin’s love story. (“The sea urchin fell in love with a fork./With a tremble of purple spines,/she told her mother, ‘He’s tall, not a ball,/but just look at his wonderful tines!’”) Bookended by sandy endpapers showing footprints among feathers and shells, the loose watercolors are beautifully rendered and take readers deeper inside the heart of the verses. From spot art to panels to full spreads, each page turn surprises but also further unifies the collection with color, shape, and movement. Some selections are fast paced and full of humor while others are more contemplative. Closing with an ode to the tide line, this accessible collection is a trip to the beach anytime readers want to go.–Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA

star Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4, May 2012 KABOOM! Go Out and Play!: Favorite Outdoor Games from KaBOOM! illus. by Julianna Rose. 96p. photos. Candlewick. 2012. pap. $11.99. ISBN 978-0-7636-5530-3.
PreS Up–A comprehensive collection of more than 70 interactive games. Beginning with eight simple steps on how to facilitate children’s play, the text introduces activities that will help kids develop critical, cognitive, social, and physical skills. Chapters are divided by types of games that are variations on familiar classics or contemporary adaptations of tag, hide-and-seek, games with balls, team games, sidewalk games, circle games, and races. Each game is clearly described in a few paragraphs; a panel at the bottom of the page shows the number of players; the intended age group; space needed; and any required materials, such as balls, bean bags, cones, and chalk. “Other Games” and “No Rule Games” include ideas for supplemental activities such “make-believe” and “dress-up.” Informative steps are included for kids and their families to take to create safe and accessible play spaces in their own neighborhoods. Colored line drawings and full-color photographs of children in active play are sporadically placed throughout to entice and encourage youngsters to get out and play with one another. This top-notch compilation makes a great resource for children and their friends, as well as families and adults who work with youth.–Janet Weber, Tigard Public Library, OR

star Reviews: Preschool to Grade 4, May 2012 ALLEN, Jonathan. Don’t Copy Me! illus. by author. 32p. Boxer Bks., dist. by Sterling. 2012. Tr $16.95. ISBN 978-1-907967-20-7.
K-Gr 1–Little Puffin just wants to enjoy his walk in the fresh air, but he doesn’t seem to be able to escape three young gull chicks bent on copying everything he does. First he tries scaring them away, then outrunning them, but to no avail. The three persistent chicks continue to mimic his every move. Finally, Little Puffin has an idea. He decides to sit very, very still so the chicks will have nothing to copy. The plan works, and soon the little gulls grow bored and wander off. But they don’t go far, and just as Little Puffin thinks he is free to enjoy a nice, quiet walk, his unwelcome company looms right around the corner. The whimsical, digitally created illustrations are appealing and expressive, and complement the text quite well. Youngsters will get a kick out of the gull chicks’ antics, especially Baby Gull, who can’t quite keep pace with the others.–Debbie Lewis, Alachua County Library District, FL
